Reading Blindsight last year was a really funny experience, in part because I did my senior thesis on theories of consciousness but also because. It was written before LLMs were really a thing.
Spoilers below the cut. It's a good book, I do recommend it even though I disagree with the author's interpretation of some things regarding consciousness.
So in Blindsight, the vampires mentioned above and the antagonist aliens are both non-conscious intelligences. Meaning they can problem solve and navigate complex systems and environments, but they don't have any subjective experiences or train of thought. They work by taking in data, forming a statistical map of connected data points, and acting based on what that model indicates will lead to advantageous outcomes.
That's a really barebones explanation, but it's also basically how modern LLMs work.
The funny thing is, reading it I could totally see how in theory this is a really scary idea. The notion of beings that achieve hypercompetence by navigating the world without the messy interpretation and emotions of human consciousness. Relying purely on the data and finding connections that no normal person would even notice.
But now that we have machines that can actually do it, it feels a little silly. Because even trained on all the internet and media data that AI companies could scrape, LLMs are still pretty stupid and have tons of limitations that are just inherent to their fundamental nature.
I don't think you could write a book like Blindsight now, because one of the central concepts has gone from being speculative and hypothetical to being something anyone with an internet connection can interact with directly. And it turned out to be really disappointing.
