Fanbinding: Through a Glass, Darkly by @glimmerglanger

Summary:

Obi-Wan had gotten to within an arm’s length of him. But it wasn’t...really Obi-Wan. He wore robes similar to his usual style, true enough. But they were splattered with something dark and wet. His hair was longer. His face was clean-shaven. He frowned across at Anakin, tilting his head to the side, and started, “Anakin, are you--”

OR, the one where Anakin gets lost in a universe that isn't... quite right and has to find his way home.

So! another glimmerglanger fic ahaha. They're all fantastic, but I was particularly inspired here. I had found some hexagon mirrors at a dollar store and was determined to use them in a binding.

There's a lot of imagery of Anakin seeing his other self through a dark glass, and I wanted to follow that here by putting the word "darkly" inside the mirror, not sitting on top. So the word is etched into the reflective back of the mirror and painted over there. I lucked out and happened to have some chiyogami with a cracked effect, so I put that to good use here!

In addition to the mirror, I had several other new things I tried out on this one: drop caps, foiling the endcaps, making my own bookcloth, and designing the latticework around the mirror.

I keep rotating this one like a 3D model of a tarantula in my mind it is definitely darker subject matter but the impetus was actually playing Control (2019) and thinking "what if the threat of confinement was from the SCP Foundation"

and then thinking immediately after that "and of course the real story to be told, in epistolary and fragmentary bureaucratic doc format, is the consequences of the fact that she got out and they no longer know where she is -- but they may now know there are more of them if Andy and Nile came to break her out and she wasn't there"

and the fridge horror element of this all for me is in the "classified as an anomalous humanoid" and filtering the Guard's fear of capture through the lens of an organization whose self-and-other-appointed mission is to Secure, Contain, Protect because there's some parallels and they're messy and I kinda wanna dig into those

A friend has been playing through Control (2019) for my wife and I to observe and partway through I turned to my other friend and said "I want Jesse to meet GlaDOS. Like a door to Aperture Science just shows up in the Oldest House" and it was an excuse for me to brush up on some HTML/CSS coding I'm experimenting with for another Government Document-formatted fic I wanna do at some point

I wrote the intro but have yet to write the Jesse Meeting GlaDOS scene, hence the WIP status!

i see your death of the author and raise you: death of the fandom, for when other fans and the content they produce are so unbearably bad that you divorce yourself entirely from the fanbase except for one or two Trusted Mutuals™️

And you know what? That is entirely valid. If you don’t like how other fans are behaving, or don’t like the “mainstream” headcanons/tropes/etc. used in the works produced by the fandom, or you’ve outgrown it, or the author did/said something terrible and you feel that you can no longer consume their work or associate with it in any way in good conscience, or it’s gotten “too mainstream,” or something either within the work or within the fandom is triggering for you, or it’s just plain not fun anymore, or you don’t jive with the main demographic involved in the fandom, or you’re butting heads with one of the bigger players in the fandom, or the fandom became overrun with bigots, or whatever it is, that’s okay. You can leave a fandom at any time, for any reason. Hell, you don’t even need a reason. You can decide you want no more to do with it, ever. Or that you’ll enjoy it but not engage with the fanbase. Or that you’ll enjoy it but off Tumblr/Twitter/AO3/etc. Or that you might come back to it later, but now is not the time. If you’re not happy, you can always walk away. No mess, no fuss, no drama necessary. Your happiness matters. It matters in relationships, it matters in your career, it matters in your day-to-day life, and yes, it matters in whatever fandoms you’re part of.
