If you’ve been living under a rock and somehow you still haven’t seen the last episode of Outlander, stop reading. I’m giving you plenty of space. Okay. I was not! Expecting! That! And as a fan of the books since well before the fan base knew who @samheughan was, since people were debating the merits of Chris Hemsworth vs their own perfect-for-the-role boyfriends as Jamie, since before wonderful @caitrionabalfe was perfectly cast as Claire - I’m devastated. This mass visceral reaction to the events of a series, this is gold for the show runners and for @Starz - but still. I would have been fine with Jamie and Claire living forever (or at least beyond the scope of the series) - what do you think that last instant meant, btw? And Fergus! Why did Fergus have to die?! Being such a huge fan of the books, shooting the cover story for @televisionacad was a dream. Sam and Cait’s energy together made this an unparalleled day. This will be the last time (really!) that I share anything from this shoot; these are all outtakes (except for the last one, which I didn’t shoot). It’s been said a billion times, but bravo to the casting directors - Sam and Cat were perfect for these roles. Thank you for making this beautiful piece of storytelling for eleven (!!!!) years, and thanks especially to @diana_gabaldon for her huge talent, her deep research, her complex weaving of science and history and magic, and her romantic heart. And thanks as always to the wonderful team at Emmy! (It seemed especially appropriate to choose a track by my brilliant Scottish songstress, @angelamccluskeymusic - someone else who should have lived forever. ) Creative Director - @bleiweissdesign Photo Director - @rosecefalu Stylist - @alejandrovision Sam’s Groomer - @nelliechristine Hair - @garethbromell Makeup - @fabiolamakeup Location - @thebobbyheller #outlander #starz #samheughan #caitrionabalfe #emmy 3 h
I’m combining a few anons who asked for my take on the couples therapy bloopers.
Honestly? I was surprised. Not because of the chemistry, that’s always there. What surprised me was the level of intimacy, and how instinctively, quickly, and naturally they sank into it, when as far as we know they haven’t been touching like that in over a year and a half. Even stable couples who haven’t been physically close in a while usually have a second of hesitation, a beat of finding the rhythm again. Here, it looked like they didn’t miss a step.
And it wasn’t casual contact, either. Caitriona acted like it was the most natural thing in the world to press her thigh to his, to squeeze his knee (we’ll get back to that), to run her fingers through his hair, touch his cheek, hook her leg around him. And on his end, he was acting like her lips were the most fascinating thing he’s seen in the last year.
When it’s inside the sketch, you can still argue “fine,” they’re actors, they’re performing, it’s for the bit. But we’re talking about the bloopers. The out of character moments. The breaks. And even then they kept their faces close, kept hands on legs, kept that gentle thumb movement on his knee.
And the moment that, for me, told the whole story in two seconds was when they were reading the script and Caitriona, without even noticing, squeezed his knee in a way you can’t explain away as part of the sketch, not as “siblings,” and not even as “best friends.” Honestly, especially not as best friends. The casualness of it, and the fact that he didn’t flinch, didn’t shift, like it’s completely normal for them, said everything.
And then in promo we’re being sold “home,” loving spouses, Instagram stories. How many partners, even partners of actors, would be fine seeing their partner behave like this with their “best friend”? Especially when it’s just a comedy sketch, where boundaries could easily have been set if they wanted to.
It felt like we saw them in their natural environment, with a host they like and feel comfortable with, and “being themselves” seems to mean a level of ease and physical intimacy that doesn’t really make sense for friends. Everything else is the story they tell around it.

(set about 7 years after Jamie and Claire’s wedding)
~~
Claire glanced at the clock on the microwave, then to the table where four-year-old Faith attentively folded paper napkins into neat triangles, then to the kitchen doorway where Jamie held two-year-old William snuggled against his shoulder.
“It’s been three minutes.”
Jamie kissed his son’s brow and slowly set him on the floor. “Can ye find Fergus, wee lad? He’ll be doing his homework in yer bedroom.”
“Aye!” William’s face, still a bit red and tear-streaked, brightened. He scampered down the long hallway of the flat, toward the room he had recently started sharing with his twelve-year-old brother.
“Finished, Mama.”
Claire smiled at her eldest daughter. “Well done! Now can you set them at the places? Dinner should be ready soon.” She glanced up at her husband. “We just need Brianna.”
Jamie pursed his lips and quietly headed in the opposite direction of William. In just a few steps he opened the door to the bairns’ play room, currently strewn with pieces of Willie’s wooden railway set and Faith’s picture books and Brianna’s plushies.
She was still facing the corner, small shoulders squared, half her hair come undone from the fiery red braid streaming down her back.
Jamie and Claire’s practice for time outs was one minute per year of age. Three-year-old Brianna had of late been giving them a lot of practice.
Today, well. He had arrived home from the print shop this evening a bit later than was normal, to relieve Murtagh from another day with the three wee ones. Suzette had come by not too long after that, chattering happily in French with Fergus, who carried a pot of her delicious beef bourguignon stew for the Frasers’ supper. Claire walked in the door not too long after that, still in her scrubs, rubbing the tiredness from her eyes before she was mobbed by her bairns and gave Suzette a grateful hug and received a proper kiss from her husband.
It would be just a few minutes to heat the stew and prepare a salad for dinner – enough for some quiet time with Jamie, ideally, talking about their days as the bairns kept up their games in the play room.
Jamie had poured a glass of merlot, and was savoring it from his wife’s lips, when they heard it.
With three children under five, they had heard their fair share of shrieks and cries. But this was different.
Jamie dropped the knife and carrot he’d been chopping, and somehow they bolted down the hallway to the play room.
William stood in the center of the play room, sobbing, face red with strain and anger. Faith held him, glaring at Brianna – who stood on the other side of the room, glowering.
Immediately Claire rushed to her son, who collapsed against her shoulder.
Jamie knelt to look eye to eye with Brianna. “Will ye tell me what happened, Bree?”
She shook her head.
“She hit Willie.” Faith’s voice was quiet as she looked down at the blue flowers woven into the carpet. “Three times.”
Claire kissed William’s messy brown curls.
Jamie’s eyes narrowed at his younger daughter. “And why would you do such a thing, Brianna Ellen?”
“He wouldnae share.”
“And that’s what you do wi’ people who dinna share? Hit them?”
Brianna stuck her chin out defiantly. “Aye.”
Jamie glanced over at his wife, who sighed.
He stood and pointed to the corner. “Off ye go. Think about what happened and why ye are being put in time out.”
Claire rose, still holding William. “Faith – can you help me set the table for dinner, please?”
“Aye, Mama.” Faith glanced over at Brianna – already facing the corner – and disappeared toward the kitchen.
Four minutes later, Jamie approached Brianna and sat on the floor behind her, wincing as his bum landed on pile of Fergus’ Legos.
“Turn around, a leannan.”
Bree did, arms crossed.
“Why did I put ye in time out?”
“‘Cos I smacked Willie.”
“That’s right. And was the right thing to do?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“‘Cos I could have asked nicer for him to give me the plushie coo.”
“Aye. Why else?”
“‘Cos it’s no’ good to hit people.”
Jamie nodded. “That’s right. It’s never a good idea to hit people. Any people, but most especially the people we love the most.” He lay a gentle hand on Bree’s shoulder. “He’s your wee brother. He loves ye, verra much. Do ye love him?”
Bree nodded.
“Weel. He is still learning to use his words like how you and Faith and Fergus use them. Do ye understand?”
“Aye.” She looked down. “Does he hate me, Da?”
Jamie squeezed her shoulder. “No. But what do ye need to do now?”
“Say sorry.”
“That’s right. And tell him how much you love him. You know I love you, wee Bree?”
She nodded and launched into his arms. He held her tight, kissing her messy hair.
“Sorry, Da. I love ye.”
“Aye, I ken. Now say it to Willie, and then we’re having Tante Suzette’s special French stew for supper.”
Jamie stood and held out a hand to Brianna. But she stood on her own, and walked quickly out of the play room.
Jamie followed her down the hall – past the kitchen, where Faith set the last water glass on the dinner table – and to the first bedroom on the left. The boys’ room – which was next to the girls’ room shared by Faith and Brianna, and across the hall from Mama and Da’s room.
Fergus sat at the desk Jamie had brought home from the print shop, touching a textbook with one hand and diligently writing with the other. William quietly sat in his bed – Fergus had insisted Willie have the top bunk – hugging George, his favorite stuffed rabbit.
“Willie?”
He peered down, skeptically, at his sister.
“I’m sorry I hit ye.”
Jamie crossed his arms in the doorway. “And?”
Brianna folded her hands. “And I love ye. And I’m sorry. I’m no’ sorry that I love ye, I’m sorry for smacking ye.”
William sniffled.
“Willie?” Jamie’s voice was so gentle.
“Fanks, Bree.” He held out his arms, and Jamie lifted him from the top bunk and down to the ground. Somehow he had lost one of his socks.
Brianna shifted from foot to foot in front of her brother.
William reached to hug her. And she let him.
Jamie sighed, shoulders finally relaxing. He exchanged a glance with Fergus.
“All right, petits,” their elder brother smiled. “Hopefully Maman hasn’t completely burned Tante Suzette’s stew for our supper!”
Claire insisted that Brianna sit next to William at the dinner table. She strapped him into his booster seat and Faith set a piece of bread on her younger brother’s plate.
The six Frasers joined hands and bowed their heads as Jamie said the blessing.
“Thank ye, Lord, for this food. For Tante Suzette for making it. For Mama who just received top marks in her medical residency. And for each and every one of you, sitting here wi’ us tonight. Because there was a time when Mama and I thought we’d never have this. Amen.”
“Amen,” the bairns repeated softly before digging into the stew.
“Willie?” Brianna said after a while.
He slurped his stew.
“Can I play wi’ the coo tomorrow?”
Claire was grateful that for some occasions, including tonight, she still insisted Willie wear a bib – for there seemed to be as much stew on his face as in his bowl.
Willie bit into his piece of bread. “OK. Next time you ask, aye?”
Brianna nodded.
Faith sighed.
Fergus patted Willie’s shoulder.
Claire looked across the table at Jamie, tired but smiling. He blew her a kiss.

Now that the last promo week is behind us, packed with interviews, panels, and one couples therapy sketch, we can finally start summing up what we just watched.
First, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed by the Paley panel. I was really hoping for something funnier and looser, something where Sam and Caitriona would drop their guard a little. The questions were good and some of the answers were informative, even if a portion of it was the same material we’ve heard for years. (Also, are we supposed to conclude from this that Caitriona didn’t read Sam’s book? Because the whiskey story was in there, and it’s been repeated again and again since.) But the overall vibe felt more serious than I expected, and a lot of the focus went to Matt and Maril. At the end of the day, what I’ll probably remember most is that they shared the Whisky, again, and their priceless faces when Matt started talking about Fergus’s death. Unlike other panels, I don’t think I’ll rewatch that one.
From there, we move on to the real highlight of this whole awful promo cycle for this awful season: the couples therapy bit with Josh. The script was mostly cringey, but in a harmless way. The ending, though, was more than I expected, to be honest. It’s been a year and a half since they were last paid to act like that, and yet it felt like no time had passed. The chemistry wasn’t just still there, it honestly looked stronger, hotter, and sexier than most of Jamie and Claire’s love scenes since Season 4.
And I’m supposed to believe there are partners who are totally fine with their partner being that comfortable touching, looking at, and interacting like that with their “best friend,” especially when it’s not even within the strict framework of a work contract, but a comedy sketch?
A partner would have to be made of supernatural material not to feel at least a flicker of jealousy.
Credit where it’s due: shoutout to Reshma for saying to Matt’s face what we all wanted to say, and for cementing her status, in my eyes, as the best Outlander journalist out there.
Beyond that, I don’t have much else from this week that felt memorable to me. We did see that Sam is capable of being a gentleman and genuinely kind when he wants to be, and we also saw exactly when he doesn’t want to.
To sum it up, the promo from start to finish was severely lacking. It failed to build excitement or convey the scale of the moment. It all felt bland and low effort: panels with no spark, dry interviews, no fun games, no returning legacy cast to give us that nostalgia hit, no special unreleased clips, nothing that actually celebrated something that meant so much to so many people.
A quick word on the finale episode: for me, it climbed straight into the top five episodes of the entire series. Honestly, they could’ve scrapped this whole unnecessary season and released just that episode as a standalone, and it would’ve been perfect. Will there be a movie? My bet is yes. Now we just need Diana to finish book 10 in our lifetime.
Hi! :) I know you're not psychic but...do you think that Paleyfest will be available to watch online at some point?
Hiya Anon! Thanks for the ask!
Hahah, if only I were 😄 But going off of what they've done in the past, yes Paley will definitely be available at some point. I don't remember which of the two orgs between Paley and 92Y were better at doing so quickly, but I feel like Paley is (unfortunately) the slower of the two. Hopefully they'll get it together sooner rather than later since this is for the finale 🥺
I know I'm very much looking forward to seeing the full panel. I heard it was a very emotional night
Here's the full Paley panel!

Back in 2017 we shot a silly little sketch with OUTLANDER’s Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan. Couples Therapy exploded pretty quickly and since then I’ve heard the constant calls from the fans for a sequel. Well at long last it’s here and the timing couldn’t be better. OUTLANDER has meant a lot to me personally and professionally. I’m so happy we got to close this chapter with this full circle moment. Big thanks to Starz, Caitriona, Sam, Sammy Heller (co-author of the script), Colin Rooney for his quick and brilliant editing, and the fans who motivated all of us to make sure this finally happened. Watch the full sketch on YouTube.com/@joshhorowitzclips And we’re posting fun extras on our patreon! Patreon.com/happysadconfused #sassenachfeet 48 min

A dose of well needed humor...always. Silly, over dramatic humor...with the added touch of the Cowbell neck adornment. Surprised he didn't hand Josh a bottle of Sassenach Spirits as a parting gift!
Beautiful!
