I donât like Cole Cassidy
Call him Joel Morricone. Itâs a better name and it keeps his initials the same AND it was already right there in the lore so it doesnât feel as⊠awkward. I also just donât like names that have alliteration, itâs always made me cringe. I wonât be calling the cowboy this and Iâm not looking forward to them changing his voice line when he loads up T.T
Confirming Joel Morricone as not only Jesseâs pen-name, but his actual name wouldâve been a nod to the fandom. Cole Cassidy is obviously cheap damage control.
You know, that âJesse McCree uses the pen name Joel Morricone to write articles about himselfâ theory holds a lot more weight when you realize that Morricone probably comes from Ennio Morricone, the guy who composed the music for âThe Good, The Bad, and The Uglyâ.
My favorite small Overwatch theory is the Jesse is Joel Morricone theory. In brief: it is speculated that Jesse and Joel, a minor character who works as a writer, are the same person.
This theory stems from the positive view Morricone takes of vigilantism, his defense of Jesseâs vigilantism, and his self-description as a âwhite hat wearerâ and âpundit for hireâ and from quotes about Jesseâs name on Hollywood and his identity in spawn interaction with Sombra.
Meet the Press
Morricone is a very minor character in the lore, a journalist who wrote an opinion column about rising vigilantism:Â âThe New Peacekeepers: Vigilante Justice â Vital in a Post-Overwatch World?â The first paragraph, except for the last phrase, of the column was tweeted by @PlayOverwatch in March 2015, prior to the closed beta period, as part of introducing the world, the lore, and the characters. This column helped introduce Jesse, and itâs the only piece of lore that mentions Morricone. The image in the tweet also appears in the Overwatch Visual Source Book in Jesseâs section, with the first paragraph complete. Itâs the version shown below for that reason, despite being of lower quality:

Fuck it, I'm calling him Joel, fuck you Blizzard I don't care, cassidy is fine but Cole?! Really!? Joel Cassidy is his name and that's what it'll be for me, if anyone wants to join me in this then feel free

Dragons Trailer - Japanese Translation
Oh my god, Iâm so weak. Iâm weak, so I translated Genjiâs and Hanzoâs interaction in the Japanese version of âDragonsâ. (I would translate the narratorâs lines, but Iâll hold off on itâthough, the way he says some of the things are really great.) Â Iâve put it next to the English version so you can see where the script diverges. There were some phrases that came out a little strangely. The original English lines will be on top, next to the speakerâs name, and the Japanese-translated lines will be below it in italics. Any notes will be put in a blockquote.
My Japanese is only subpar, so some of the nuances may have been lost. Please donât take this as official or use it elsewhere. This is just for fun and just me being too excited.Â
Hanzo: You are not the first assassin sent to kill me, and you will not be my last. To send a novice who canât even mask their presence, I must be being underestimated.
Genji: You are bold to come to Shimada castle, the den of your enemies. To trespass into Shimada Castle like this, Iâll acknowledge that you have balls.
I have no good explanation for why I used âballsâ. He says ăćșŠèžă ăăŻèȘăăăăwhich is something like, âI can at least commend you for your braveryâ or âI acknowledge that you have courage, at least.â But this was funnier.Â
Hanzo: This was once my home, did your masters did not tell who I was?! This was once my home, did you not even know that?
Genji: I know who you are, Hanzo. I know you come here every year on the same day. You risk so much to honour someone you murdered. I already know, Hanzo. I also know that you go out of your way to come here every year on the same day in order to mourn someone youâve killed.
Seeing Hanzoâs face here when Genji speaks his name makes a lot of sense. As mentioned in a previous post, you donât usually use someoneâs first name in Japanese unless youâre very, very close to them. So for this stranger/assassin to come and say his name so casually, Hanzo is understandably shocked and angryâwho is this man to pretend he knows him so well that he can speak his first name so casually? How dare he.Â
Hanzo: You know nothing of what happened! What would you know?
Genji: I know you tell yourself that your brother disobeyed the clan, and that you have to kill him to maintain order, that was your duty. I know that your younger brother was the shame of your clan. You had no choice but to kill him, is what you had to tell yourself.
This hurts in Japanese. Itâs basically Genji saying that he knows that his whole family hated him. He specifically says ăćŒăŻäžæăźæ„ăor âThe younger brother was a disgrace/the clanâs shameâ. It takes on a very different meaning than the English version where Genji sounds like he just did one thing wrong. Here, his entire existence is being denied by his family. And he knows it.Â
Hanzo: It was my duty, and my burden. That does not mean I do not honour him. Thatâs right. I had a duty that I had to fulfill. But I have never once forgotten my younger brother.
Genji: You think you honour your brother Genji with incense offerings? Honour residing oneâs actions. With incense and offerings, do you think that your brother, Genji, would be pleased? Sincerity should be shown through oneâs actions.
Hanzo: You dare lecture me about honour? You are not worthy to say his name. Ryuu ga waga teki wo kurau! You fool, what are you playing at? Donât speak my brotherâs name so frivoulously! RYUU GA WAGA TEKI WO KURAU!
MY FAVORITE INSULT, ăăăăă(tawake) (but it may or may not be because Gilgamesh from Fate uses it a lot. Itâs an interesting choice of insult, actually. Itâs a little deeper than âfoolââlike the person being insulted has no idea what theyâre talking about and the person giving the insult is annoyed. And then Hanzo says ă軜ă ăăćŒăźćăćŁă«ăăăȘăŁïŒă which is a great way to put it.Â
Genji: Ryuujin no ken wo kurae! RYUUJIN NO (ry
Hanzo: Only a Shimada can control the dragons, who are you? Do it then, kill me. What is the meaning of this? Controlling dragons is the power of my clan. Why do you hesitate? Kill me.
Genji: No, I will no grant you the death you wish for, you still have a purpose in this life, brother. No. There is no meaning in slaughtering someone who seeks death. You have to find your reason for living, brother.
He uses ăć è ă. Itâs not just old, itâs just not really used. Thereâs significance to this, but itâs also hard to explain.Â
Hanzo: No. How? My brother is dead. Genji. No. You should have been dead! Genji.
Hanzo: What have you become? That formâŠjust whatâŠ?
Genji: I have accepted what I am, and I have forgiven you, now you must forgive yourself. The world is changing once again Hanzo, and itâs time to pick as side. As I took on this new self, I have forgiven you, brother. And now, all thatâs left is for you to forgive yourself. The world is once again in troubling times, the question now is who you will side with.
Hanzo: Real life is not like the stories our father told us, you are a fool for believing it so! The real world is nothing like our fatherâs fairy-tales. Enough, cast away your fantasies!
Genji: Perhaps I am a fool to think there is still hope for you, but I do. Think on that, brother. Even if these fantasies are mocked, I will still believe. Let us meet again, brother.
When he says the âLet us meet again, brotherâ line, Iâm really emotional. I donât usually hear ăăăăăŸăăat all. Itâs kind of dramatic and something youâd hear from like someone wandering into the sunset in an old movie. Itâs not something you hear in modern Japanese.
quick added ramble because my tags got too long but i love this⊠so much, japanese has such fascinating intricacies we donât see in english and i appreciate the breakdown VERY MUCH THANK U OPÂ
also I wanted to mention how genji and hanzo compliment/parallel each other in their language choicesâ it makes infinitely more sense to me that genji calls hanzoăć è ărom; anija knowing that hanzo calls himselfă æè ărom; sessha (lit; clumsy person) which is⊠hilarious, and adorable, and potentially heartwrenching (itâs a very old and humble way of saying âIâ that dates back to the edo period and was typically used by samurai)
that isnât actually mentioned in this but in another post by OP over here
like if hanzoâs been running around referring to himself as such probably after reading one too many classics itâs seems very fitting to genjiâs character that heâd play along Â
AND ANOTHER THING Genji usingă äżș ărom; ore which is the hard masculine form of âIâ (the one youâll most typically hear used by male speakers) is a perfect contrast to Hanzoâs overly polite language asă äżș ăis more likeâŠÂ âi am comfortable enough with you/in myself that i do not feel the need to be politeâ often oversimplified to ârudeâ but it is more complicated than that in actualityÂ
the antiquated language might just be a quirk of their yakuza lifestyle, but even then i hear a lot more ă ć èČŽ ărom; aniki (older brother) and iâm not letting this go goddamn itÂ
either way i love them, i love japanese, and oh god i am experiencing at least 2 emotions right nowÂ
I have RSI atm so I couldnât play this new /Â ânewâ / event even if I wanted to but Iâm not missing anything, I donât want these skins :/Â
god i miss this show so much
why does this look like Moira and Reyes hjkhjkjh and the butler also kinda looks like Morrison
(sorry OP)
What is this show? I need it
A Disney show called Gargoyles!
the mood for today
MCCREE IS FUCKIN WHITE?????????? I ALWAYS FUCKIN THOUGHT HE WAS NATIVE????????
His concept art started put with him as an obviously white cowboy with a confederate flag on his belt (the creator is uh. pretty weird and racist btw but he stopped working on the concepts & with ovw altogether I think?) BUT, his final look changed and they made him a brown cowboy, and there was some evidence that he could be Latino (& there's more concrete evidence in that ovw recipe book that came out), and people these 5 years have been asking the creators & game devs and debating whether or not that he was white, and we were NEVER given a concrete answer. McCree being Native/Latino/Black or any mixture of those three are common among fans of color especially so there's some content of it.
So like, long story short, McCree was probably meant to be white, but his official look turned him into a very racially ambiguous dude that the creators refused to confirm as white or not because they wanted to please both the fans who believe he's a moc vs the fans who think he's white. So yeah he's probably white but ovw literally can't blame ppl for wanting to believe or thinking he's literally not white when they made him THAT brown & then skirted around telling us maybe he is/n't lol
haven't followed any overwatch tags/updates in years but just saw a ghost-white mccree that's apparently official? ¿qué le pasó? ¿quién es ese hombre?
if blizzard really wanted to improve mccree's design they would've made him messier but they're cowards
