bring your ugly to work day
I think a lot about who I am to other people in the world–particular who I am to strangers as a mere concept in their lives.
Today this woman called our information desk and said, “my son’s band is playing tonight. I want to come see him, but he never answers his phone…..I want to be there. Have you heard anything about his band?”
And I felt so bad for this lady but I’m not in the music scene around here so I had to tell her no, sorry.
Five hours later, I’m hiking and run into a group of guys setting up for some outdoor performance, and as I watch them unload the drums it hits me.
“Hey,” I said, “are y’all in a band?”
They said yeah and smiled and I told them “one of your moms called today. She wants to watch you play, but she can’t get a hold of you. Call your mom.”
And they all pulled out their phones and started discussing whose mom it probably was as they presumably dialed their own.
And now, unless we meet again and recognize each other, that’s who I’ll be forever to those guys–some mysterious courier for mom-messages who came out of the woods and told them their mom called.
I didn’t even tell them why their mom called me. Who am I to their mom?? Nobody even asked. They just took my word for it and called their mothers.
Amazing.
I’M LAUGHING!!! THEY DIDN’T EVEN ASK WHO I AM.

This situation is kinda making me want to draw/edit Dionysus to be a fat Black man tbh
Oh you weren't there for the Dionysus DTIYS!
That was one of my favorite ones fr! Also spurred on by antiblackness from the same gaggle of people saying the same bullshit. Everybody really showed out with the Dionysus pieces, they were SO GOOD!
Anyway, do it!!!! Imma go find the first in the masterposts and bring it to you!

It was a PHENOMENAL run!!
Been trying to investigate the fandom for fun recently... I've noticed that (when it comes to the Life Series specifically) people are very fond of the interpretation that Grian remembers every Life, whereas Scar remembers only some/pretends not to remember. And it sort of results in a whole lot of grief?
Because I never stop thinking about that myth (ever.), that reminded me a lot of Orpheus and Eurydice. Specifically a post I saw recently that said something along the lines of "Orpheus walks to the Underworld over and over again, knowing he'll look back, and we mock him for it; but what of Eurydice, who knows it's pointless from the start every time, but walks anyway just to spend a little more time with her lover?"
Do you understand what I'm getting at? A person who remembers and tries again anyway, and a person who pretends for the sake of the other. You know?
(I'm writing something about the myth so it was on my mind)
OH..... I SEE WHERE YOU'RE GOING......... that's a very death game time loop-esque interpretation too......... an i'll fall in love with you again and again despite knowing the outcome......... yeah very them

So my beta reader for the Big Fics is an astrophysicist, right. Who is currently also writing a hard sci-fi novel about the exploration of Phobos (more power to them, I cannot with the physics required for that, best I can do is soft sci-fi/fantasy and that reminds me I should finish that story).
Anyway I was bitching about how hard it is to come up with feasible planets in Star Wars because sometimes you need a new planet from scratch and sometimes you need to know more about a planet than the 'has jungles, is probably a moon technically' than Wookieepedia will give you, and they're like 'oh yeah I can do something about that'.
So they've written (in Matlab but they swear it will run as a .exe as well and I may be conscripted to embed it as a web tool at some point) a star system generator.
You input what you know about the planet (ecosystem, population, sun colour, does it have liquid water, does it have a moon or moons, is it a moon or moons, temperature averages, atmosphere, you get me) and it will give you the... everything else about the star system, in obedience to real-universe physics. And if you input nothing you get a randomly generated star system.
And I’m like oh I know people who will be into this with a vengeance, and they're not on Tumblr, so this is me seeing who exactly would be keen on, and I cannot stress this enough, a real-physics comprehensive star system generator.
It's still in the debugging phase (last error fixed: every planet wants to have a population of exactly 5000 regardless of other factors, turned out to be a missing equals sign somewhere), but I'm psyched for this and trying to gauge interest for how high a priority 'make this an accessible web tool' needs to be.
Reblogging to drag this project over here, this is killing my notes on main so I'm giving it its own URL. Follow over here for updates on the star system generator and only the star system generator, and not on my Star Wars bullshit.
Will go through and tag interested parties when things calm down below 100 notes an hour.
