Broke: Teenage girls who are overinvested in gay romance are freaks and fujoshi, and should feel even more ashamed of their sexualities than they already do by virtue of being teenage girls.

Woke: Teen girls overinvested in gay romance are more likely to become LGBTQ allies, which is a good thing! Allies are still necessary in our march toward equality.

Bespoke: I was a teen girl overinvested in gay romance, and now I’m a queer nonbinary adult. All of my fandom friends from that era? Also queer. If you had told me it was wrong of me to read gay fanfiction and imagine my faves in love, it would have taken me much longer to realize I was queer.

Shaming young women for enjoying queer content prevents baby queers from exploring their identities in safe, (somewhat) socially acceptable ways. It prevents closeted queer kids from celebrating their identities online. Most importantly, it makes it harder for me to find good queer fanworks.
