All of the ways we try to divide our species into little boxes, and no one seems to get the whole reason why we are in this mess, and that the Isms still survive, is because we are barely out of the savannah. Putting things into boxes and categories is extremely helpful when the next big cat comes around the corner, but due to how we love our lives and the human experience has changed (and the SPEED, we cannot forget that) humans are in a situation where their own survival instincts have become discouraged, either hidden away or straight up selected against.

Racism is bad, sexism is bad, homophobia in all its flavours (trans, queer, bi, etc), these are leftovers from a time when "all four legged things are dangerous and anything not from my tribe could be a threat" was not only crucial to our survival, but selected for.

Now we are going through the painful process of adapting to a new environment with new pressures of OUR OWN DESIGN. And the Powers That Be, the wickedest and cruelest among us, have learned how to turn those cautionary instincts into weapons to keep the rest of us in check.

Your biology and ecology is being hijacked by bad actors. Time for us to start growing claws.

The offending party was not told "no" enough. They just had enablers, people who would encourage any weird or grim impulse and enable truly heinous shit that is unacceptable elsewhere.

This hits on a lot of the notes but I'll happily clarify.

See, the thing about fandoms and a lot of these bad actors is, a lot like the bad actors in real life, they were not allowed to fail, and certainly were not allowed to stew in it. Racist writers, for instance, are in a bubble that tells them "whites are superior, everyone else is inferior" as they grew up. In a way it kind of fits into "politics is in all writing" thing. One's beliefs and upbringing guides how they view and approach art. Sexism, too, is one of these bad biases.

This is also why ostensibly not-shitty-people end up writing shit like "Oh the g**** girl is definitely an exotic beauty". They were not told things were wrong, and were raised in a way that prevents them from accepting criticism because they see it as a character attack.

And of course, with pushback comes doubling down or retreating to groups that feed the toxin within because to challenge one's belief at that point is like challenging their existence as a whole.

All of this, or at least enough that it makes finding bad actors easy, could be remedied if we had consequences instead of algorithms. Hope it helps!

No, your story may not have political intrigue or be set somewhere where the rules are simple, but just because politics as a system is not a part of your book DOES NOT MEAN you don't put your beliefs and biases into things. We all do it. It comes subconsciously based on our experiences.

For example, if I wrote a story about the evolution of life on earth I would be channeling my interests and knowledge of deep time to make the story work with what I'm doing.

Not.

Claim you don't write with your beliefs/politics in mind. Because to be truly apolitical in this case is to not believe in anything at all.
