A Brief History On My Family’s House
My dad is a toy sculptor/designer, he worked on series like the original TMNT toyline, Skeleton Warriors, old Happy Meal figures & many more. Towards the end of the 90′s his work with Playmates died off, so he and another person on the sculpting team there started their own business. That business didn’t last long, ending with his partner ultimately using and fucking over my dad. The age of digital sculpting was starting to grow and jobs for sculptors became more and more scarce.
For a long while from the mid 2000′s into the early 10′s we struggled greatly with keeping our house. My family home is old and the neighborhood was starting to get improved. A housing enclosure opened in front of us where a giant empty lot used to be, sidewalks were built. The construction threw around a lot of dirt. Were in a valley, weather is often drastic- lots of winds. My family didn’t put much effort in up-keeping the old property. So roofing blew off or just deteriorated with age, upkeep went down over the years as the moral of the house dipped and unexpected things just started happening.
In 2012 we had major fights with our city. One of our neighbors in the area started reporting us frequently to the city. This led the city into putting more of a focus on the area- which resulted in them forcing an alleyway through the block our house sits in. We tried fighting this, because it cut our property size, made us have to rethink the entire back of our house and we had an old mobile home in the back of the property- in the alley
The mobile home was brought over in the 90′s through my mom’s side of the family. For a brief period of time her sister and their family lived in the mobile home. Once they got their footing and moved to greener pastures they just left. not taking the mobile home with them.
So when this alley trouble started, the city fined us for it among other small nit-picks and we had to rapidly deconstruct the structure in order to make way for the alley. That was one of the worst summers of my life, every day my family woke up at 7am and spent the entire day deconstructing the mobile home. From my memory of the situation, my family had heard the person who was trying to cause trouble for my family and basically kick us out had a son who worked for the city and wanted to own our house. My family tried to fight the city, but did a lot of dumb decisions and ultimately just took the abuse and payed the fines- though it crippled us financially for a long long time.
At the moment my dad is starting get a somewhat more steady stream of work, but it’s still not enough to fix some of the major problems in my home. The tree, the roofing situation, a lot of our piping issues- All of it just got worse and worse. We don’t have the money to really fix this stuff and we don’t have the knowledge to work on it ourselves. Right now im trying to do the best I can in cleaning the property inside and out. My hope is in taking a more active role in the house that it somehow inspires others in my family to do the same. My dad’s definitely got slobby qualities to him, but is willing to take action. My mom & brother though are harder to reach and show a lot of signs of hording.
I know im not entitled to anything, no one has to help, but i’m tired of the way it is and trying to figure out some kind of solution because it’s so much on our plate. So like I said in the other posts…
