Trying to get back into writing and art, it's been a few years so I'm INCREDIBLY rusty so expect 90% of this to be me fucking around and finding out

Haven’t finished the Primal Fear novel yet so I don’t know if this detail plays out at all but I do find it interesting that the movie version changes Shaughnessey’s first name to John

When the novel version opens up early on saying his name is Roy

Which IMMEDIATELY set off alarm bells in my head before I even read on—

I’m working on my own vague rewrite so this might be a jump from canon, but I like the idea of taking a more covert and kinda(?) realistic approach to DID, where Aaron and the rest don’t have the words to describe what they experience, that there’s just these wild shifts in feelings and mindsets and the assumption is that Aaron is “fickle” or “having a bad day”

Where none of them go by separate names until the whole Archbishop Rushman thing happens

Where we see Shaughnessey throwing out reports involving Rushman, possibly intimidating other altar boys from going to the police.

I don’t know how Aaron would know Shaughnessey personally, but maybe the idea of Shaughnessey simply undermining and talking down on the abuse causes Roy to use Shaughnessey’s name for his own, taking the behavior of abusers or figures of power to establish an identity. The mindset that this stuff didn’t happen to Roy, Aaron let it happen to himself. Obviously the abuse affects all of them, but the fact that it *is* happening causes Roy to distinctly set himself apart from Aaron, he needs that degree of separation

primal fear thoughts

the thing about primal fear is it sets itself up for so much moral ambiguity... but in the last scene, the line about killing Laura — it takes it all away. Okay, Roy, Aaron whatever, is a gleeful murderer and murdered not just the priest (who deserved it) but his fellow victim. The moral ambiguity is lost to stick it to Vail.

Which is like, I guess that works. But is it not more interesting to keep it on the note where: yes, he lied. Yes, he's not so innocent and perfect. Yes, he murdered the priest. But does that mean he deserves the death penalty that was set up for him? In the eyes of the law its wrong, but is that itself wrong? The fact that the discovery of his sexual abuse was a negative, something that condemned him rather than the reverend; is there not something wrong about that? Of course supposedly in those cases things should go through the proper channels, but as the movie itself illustrates, these men often face no consequences by the law.

I don't know. I find that more interesting. Especially as it would interweave with Vail's own sense of righteousness in representing his golden hearted sleazebags; they're sleazebags, but he proves them not to be, by getting them off in court as they deserve, right? He's able to just... make the moral and legal rights align. Isn't that nice. And he did here too, but not knowingly, and the legal right is false. Does he still believe in innocence when it's not legally ordained, even when the corruption and flaws of the system are what pushed him out of his job in the state office?

So idk, I find that a lot more worthwhile. If I do anything with Primal Fear you can assume I'm treating this as a version of the story where the Laura murder comment is in some way either not real or fake. Maybe Aaron says it to get Vail to fuck off. After all, he saw what happened the last time a man offered him so much for free. Etc. Don't think I mean to retcon Aaron being much more violent, abrasive, etc, either. I don't. But the pointless murder which only serves to stick it to Vail's savior complex but also dunk on his belief in goodness or whatever? Nah, I'll pass. I want a better story than that, and it set itself up for a damn good one. Even within the story presented to us... It's not completely offbase of an assumption, I think. There's no evidence he's telling the truth then any more than any other time he's bullshitted to Marty. Of course, you know due to author's intent that that's supposed to be true. But, well, I suppose it's death of the author.

hello denizens of fight club tag. i am very curious. why are you here

like. what caused you to watch/read fight club. when. and what sparked you getting involved in some sense of fandom for it?

because it seems like there was an explosion (comparatively) in the past 1-2 years and i'm curious if we can figure out why

for example, for myself, i was bored on my new shiny longass commute and wanted to try reading actual books again so my friend offered me books i might like and i chose fight club because i heard it was bathhouse esque and i wanted to see how much (was not disappointed). then i wrote a fic meshing it with my figure skater coach guy, found it was fun to write about, read through most of the fight club tag on ao3 because i'm a very prolific reader, and became so full of thoughts that i had to create this blog as a desperate pressure relief valve. this occured in early october this year. i work fast.
