Given everything that's been happening lately (KOSA, the banning of "immoral" games, and so on), I don't know about you, but it pushes me to write stories that make people uncomfortable. After all, they blather on about freedom, but how can the mind be free and independent if it's guided by the expectations of others and limited by their prohibitions?

Every time I see these surveillance policies, and how they now also want to spy on our private conversations —which implies the end of encrypted messages—, I feel tiny and powerless. However, every time I sit down to write, I am the one in control. The keys my fingers press need to obey no one but me. And I'm sure the same goes for you, dear artist. So, while we boycott YouTube, why don't we kill time creating art?

I think I know why I like the ìnternet so much. It provides me a blanket, another mask that I can wear. One that I can change quickly, if the need arises. It allows me to be more open, more free for just a moment. On the other side, those that share the same comfort as me can use those abilities nefariously. It provides everyone with the same ability, no matter the person on the other side of the screen. I have more I want to write about this, I just can't find the words. I find it very interesting to note the times in which this post has a sudden resurgence. It often follows very stressful, upsetting events, where a lot of “REBLOG THIS OR YOU SUCK” posts start appearing on this site. 

So I’ll say it again: it is okay if you come to tumblr to escape upsetting news. It is okay if you’re just here for fun and fandom. It is okay if you do not want to use your tumblr as a place to read about or spread the current events that are circulating. It is okay if you need a place to decompress and just relax. There are other ways to be involved in/support causes and you are allowed to set boundaries on social media platforms without it being indicative of your belief systems. 

Your beliefs, values, ethics, and moral stances are not determined by whether or not you reblog something.

I’d like to add this photo I took last night in Victoria of the statue of Captain Cook. Though I myself am not indigenous, I 100% agree that these murderers, kidnappers and rapists shouldn’t have huge statues and plaques that decorate them and say how “great” they were.

Here’s another photo of the legislative assembly from yesterday. Later on there were more items, candles and signs at the memorial, as well as a big poster with 1505 painted on it but I didn’t get a picture

People need to see this. Not just quickly glance at the photos and keep on scrolling. They need to see this.

I had seen the first picture of the church, but not the second.

I went to a “Cancel Canada Day” event and burst into tears - not because I was surprised to learn of the unmarked graves (survivors told us they were there. Our government pushed it aside, and we let them), but because seeing all the people gathered in mourning drove it home: They. Were. Children.

This is my country’s legacy - and it’s not history. The last schools closed during my lifetime. My Father went to school with students who lived at the local residential school, after it was changed to a boarding house (read: holding centre) for indigenous youth who went to local schools.

They were all children, injured, abused, and killed in my country’s attempt to erase them. I want the world to see this and hold the state accountable to *active* reconciliation> I mean we could at least truly adopt UNDRIP in action instead of words for god’s sake.
