🪡 Restitched is a "vanilla+" mod that adds a dozen new structures, 5 biomes, roughly doubles the number of blocks in the game, and changes game mechanics just enough to completely break all your automatic farms. You have never gone out of your way to download this mod but it has 20m downloads because every modpack dev includes it

I was drifting around on youtube the other day, wasting time, when I came across one of those clickbaity "with this one law, Australia eliminated a serious problem!" kind of videos and decided to give it a look.

The problem? Street dogs. The video was this guy just walking down an Australian street, going "what do you notice? There are no dogs!" and then talking about leash laws. And it really stuck with me because like. I KNOW that there are a lot of countries in the world where roving packs of street dogs are a serious and persistent problem. My mum works with a rabies charity and has gone to multiple countries to capture, vaccinate and release feral dogs. But somehow, it straightup never occurred to me that 'lack of street dogs' would be a remarkable thing. Like I just never realised that of course people used to dogs would come here and go "Amazing! No dogs!" even though to them it would of course be a very obvious difference. It never occurred to me that something as simple as leash laws and a pound system (very common in countries similar to Australia) would be considered revolutionary and radical to anyone, even knowing that there are many countries that don't have them and are full of feral dogs.

Really demonstrates what kinds of invisible boxes we live in.

this is SO right and actually comes up every time i go overseas or interact with international friends about, say, worldbuilding. every time i see a dog on the street, i'm usually able to locate the owner or property it escaped from in ~5 minutes and put it back (same with escaped chickens actually, I think normalising pet animals staying at home has done a lot of good for us). I tell people it's because we have so much wildlife (thinking about advocacy for koalas in SEQ) but really, it's the result of incredible effort by well coordinated lawmakers. I hope within the next few years we're able to pass a similar law for cats, too, but we can't lose sight of what a massive success story we have.

Normally I would put this in tags but I was really disturbed when I visited the mall near me just a bit ago. In almost every single store, there were blindbox toys, blindbox bags, and all sorts of varieties of things in blind boxes. I wasn’t surprised by the toy stores, but fashion stores, shoe stores, even in some of the restaurants, soap and scent stores, they were unavoidable! They were literally EVERYWHERE. It really freaked me out, it’s getting really widespread. And in the stores where they’re most prevalent, the displays are featured RIGHT in front of the entrance, you HAVE to see them.

The problem is very very real. Please please do not fall for the overwhelming marketing they’re pushing.

But the goal is genuinely just to exploit the exact same psychological vulnerabilities that gambling does. And frankly in many cases to sell you unwanted stock at a premium price. I'm serious when I say we gotta give Temmie Chang half the credit for Making Undertale (and Deltarune)

She's got an animation degree, I know the art in Undertale gets underappreciated sometimes because it's trying to evoke an older simpler style, but the art in Undertale is legit amazing and without Temmie, none of Toby's ideas would have been able to be realized (without finding some other artist and animator)

She deserves more flowers for being the one who made the vast majority of the art assets for an entire game that is one of the most commonly cited games as an influence on others (her style is so beloved and recognizeable, there's a fully complete Undertale fangame emulating it)

The main reason I’m pushing for people to stop using the term ‘pedophile’ and instead use the term ‘child sexual abusers’, is because since all discussions of child sexual abuse focus on this idea of an evil person who is just out to get kids because they are sexual attracted to them, it makes it hard for kids who where sexually assaulted by people who don’t fit that description to realize they were sexually assaulted.

It didn’t register for me until recently that my experiences of being forced to strip naked multiple times at the mental hospital to be ‘checked’ when I was 14 was sexual assault, because the people who did it were nurses/doctors who clearly didn’t find me sexually attractive but instead used it as a form of humiliation and control towards children they deemed as ‘unruly’ and ‘uncooperative’ (ie. children who asked to be treated like people). I thought only people who fit into this idea of a child attracted pedo could be child sexual abusers, so I thought my experience didn’t count.

Stepping away from the idea that there is a pedophile boggieman and instead highlighting that anyone can be a child sexual abuser will help more people realize that their experiences are sexual assault.

You know, one of the most shameful consequences of scifi/game authors not knowing shit is cyberpsychosis, or Essence, or whatever in-universe asspull for a mechanical limiter on how much cyberware you can cram into a character sheet.

There is an easy excuse in real life! You may not be able to get both a pacemaker and a DBS device because they're both pieces of sensitive equipment that could theoretically interfere with each other, and nobody engineered them not to. Trivially you can extrapolate this to all cybernetics. If your various augs weren't Specifically designed not to mess with each other (and of course the various megacorps might take things a step further, making their shit actively hostile to mix-and-matching), you might have problems; and obviously, the more pieces of hardware you've patchworked yourself with, the worse things get. You'd have to be one real crazy motherfucker to tell a back-alley doctor to load you up with whatever they've got.

It's more grounded and more realistic and less shitty and it actively enhances the atmosphere of cyberpunk in a way that "losing your humanity" does not. we are missing out on much because none of these writers know anything about how medtech works
