Warmth.
That was the first thing I felt when I saw her smile. Like the second week of April in Boston—sunny with the fresh crispness of snow long melted, breathing life into the baby spring green leaves. But there was a twinge of sadness too, an undertone swirled into her bright smile. I think it was in her eyes, etched into the very depths of them.
The sadness never left. Her brightness flowed in a strong, never-ending stream for others, constantly holding up and supporting everyone around her. The warmth of her smile tinted her sadness to appear as strength, but once she let herself rest, her petite frame suddenly seemed frail. I realized, the first time I saw her like this, that inside she was still a child. A small girl who didn’t get a chance to grow up, taking care of herself the best she knew how. I think part of me shattered that day, seeing her patiently collect the pieces of herself that had come loose from softly supporting everything she touched day after day. The little girl inside her deserved to be playful like a normal child, and grow up and be seen and accepted as her own being.
Her gentle smile and solemn doe eyes. I’ll never forget them. Or her.
It is going to be hard, but hard is not impossible.
