I had a long discussion with friends earlier about the gender bias in how YA books are marketed and it somehow evolved into me saying "We need more fiction that questions the concept of attraction itself"

We got into how easily romance can be latched onto other genres (romantic comedy, romantic drama, fantasy romance, historical romance, etc.) and I started asking myself what an arocom (aromantic comedy) would look like. I decided, based on an old Tumblr post I can't find that joked about some comedy movie being aro representation b/c it had no romance, that it can't just be "a comedy with no romance at all", because then that's just a regular old comedy. By that logic, SpongeBob would be an arocom, which doesn't make sense b/c it largely focuses on non-romantic plots (SpongeBob working at his job, failing to get his license, the general shenanigans he and his friends get into) and only addresses romance sparingly, depending on the plot of an episode.

It sucks to admit but at least from my perspective, in order for a piece of media to qualify as "aromantic/asexual media" in the heavily sex- and romance-catered media landscape, it kinda needs to address sex and romance in the first place. As wonderful as it would be to escape for a few hours to a book or show or game where romance isn't addressed at all and think of that as aro rep, you can't really call attention to a character's lack of romantic or sexual attraction without acknowledging, even indirectly, that those exact things exist within the text.

I'm not saying sex and romance are inherently bad either. There are aces who engage in sexual activities, aros who date, folks on both spectrums who engage in kink because kink is not inherently sexual and just approach relationships in so many incredibly nuanced ways. It's not just about aspecs also having parents and siblings and pets either, we have friends and coworkers and neighbors. We have interests and skills and hobbies. But it's not just the cishets who place sex and romance on such a high pedestal as "fundamental aspects of what makes people human", I see it within the LGBT community too. There are more than a few openly queer folks out there who don't know or have forgotten that because asexuality and aromanticism are a lack or absence of attraction (and thus a lack/absence of conformist heterosexuality), that we are, to varying degrees, queer as well. And thus media with aroace subtext (or just text for that matter) tends to get excluded from discussions of queer subtext.

I feel like I got a little off-topic and rambly but Idk I just think we need more aspec fiction where people are free to explore all spectrums of attraction as much as they want, ask questions about what defines a relationship, and just generally bear in mind relationship anarchy when they create. I'd like to see it in mainstream media but I'd also like to see it in fanfic too

It is. There is nothing wrong with watching people have sex. The morality of it depends on the context (buying porn from sex workers to watch is good, revenge porn is bad, for example), but watching people fuck? That's morally neutral. It's just watching some activities.

Even if she were paid, it would still be coercive, similarly to prostitution. You cannot buy women, or their consent. That immediately creates a coercive force that makes the consent invalid.

The way these people talk about sex workers genuinely makes me sick. Sex workers are not being bought, they are not owned by people paying them. They are compensated for their services or performance, like every other worker. They own themselves no matter what. They deserve dignity and respect and their work not being described in such horrible fucking ways.

And it's genuinely fucked up to tell people what they can and cannot consent to tbh? You don't get to choose that for others and then try to say you genuinely care about consent. You just want to control people.

Also, it needs to be repeated again that stigmatization of sex work leaves trafficking victims trapped. They are now in an even more socioeconomically disadvantaged position than before because no one will want to help an "icky porn star" who is being exploited.

To help trafficked and coerced sex workers we necessarily must end the demonization of sex work or else you are giving traffickers the literal tools to force unwilling people into it!

One of my family members was sex trafficked. Her case became a part of state legal precedent because her trafficker's conviction resulted in an expanded definition of one of the terms used to define trafficking (kept vague for the sake of my family's anonymity.) You know what one of the biggest barriers was to her getting help?

The fact that everyone she reached out to saw her as a stupid meth head "whore" and not a person who was fucking afraid for her life.

If society had shown sex workers some basic amount of decency, she might have had the social standing to get help sooner.

If I was a pure evil monster and I wanted nothing more in life than to ensure rapists always had a plentiful supply of easy victims, you know what I would do?

I would make sex work illegal.

Because making sex work illegal and dumping social stigma on top of it isn't going to prevent survival sex work. But it is going to ensure that many people who become full-contact sex workers are hurting for money and possibly desperate, and lack other options. And it ensures that if someone narcs on them they will lose their income (the police can stalk them to prevent them from working) and their children (uhuh! yeah! sex work illegality impacts child custody!) and maybe get evicted (it's often illegal to lease to a sex worker!). They also might get labeled as a sex criminal and pedophile if they have kids and can't prove they never brought a client home (even when the kid was out of the house).

Even when soliciting sex work technically carries a lighter sentence, it's almost always less impactful for a client to get nabbed by the police than for a sex worker. Even in places where sex work isn't illegal, just paying for it, "no leasing to sex workers" laws can still apply, custody can still be impacted, and even if none of that applies? The police can still stalk a sex worker to deny them income from clients. Also let's be honest, what do you think the odds are of a sex worker successfully bringing a paying client who violated the terms of their agreement and raped them to court, in a legal system where sex worker is outlawed?

So making sex work illegal makes it really easy for rapists to find and target the most vulnerable sex workers they can find, with the law helping to keep the sex worker quiet! And because "promoting" prostitution is often illegal too, as is "abetting", it's not even legal to set up services or networks for tracking rapists and barring them access to sex workers!

I genuinely cannot imagine a better way to create a fresh buffet of easy victims for rapists than making sex work illegal. Which makes it really fucking difficult to believe people who claim they want sex work to be illegal because "sex workers can't consent" or "sex workers are likely to be raped". Because I don't know, I think voluntarily having sex with someone who needs to listen to your limits or suffer the attention of the law is pretty different than law enforcement giving anyone who wants to rape you a goddamn "ruin your life" button!!!

There is much controversy in the art world over the question of whether or not to clean the fragile Mona Lisa, but her sister has been restored and some fairly odd later alterations removed to show the original vibrant colors and lighting. Some details, such as the sheerness of her shawl and the pattern on the neckline of her dress, have become utterly obscured in the original, but in the restored copy they’re perfectly clear.

It blows my mind a little bit to look at these two sisters side-by-side and imagine how much vivid detail could be hiding in the Mona Lisa under 500 years of rotten varnish.
