tell me you don’t get annoyed.

tumblr’s algorithm only cares about posts that are reblogged, it doesn’t count likes. posts don’t get promoted or circulated when they only have likes (the way instagram functions), only reblogs matter for increasing reach on tumblr as a platform.

but yeah, tumblr’s system definitely doesn’t advantage non-popular artists, but there’s a big problem from within the community too. i have over 400 followers and i consider myself lucky when more than 2 people reblog my art, so imagine how much worse it is for people with even less followers.

Sorry to break it to you but they’re all right. Tumblr isn’t Instagram. Likes don’t get us anywhere. Everybody’s “drop a heart and keep scrolling” mentality has murdered all of my original content sideblogs. Each and every one of them.

I have this problem on my blog too 

if one third to one fifth of an original post’s notes on my blog are reblogs that’s considered great for me, it’s usually 1 in 10 or even 1 in 20 being a reblog. 

That means my philosophy doesn’t get spread very far. If I make promo posts barely anyone sees them. I know people didn’t like the self promo/repeat posts I did but heres the thing: nobody else was reblogging them, so only a few people saw them at a time, so that left me with the only option of reblogging things over and over to try and get them seen by more people. 

Reblogs used to dominate likes with ease, if memory serves correctly there were at least 2 reblogs for every like in the notes 

Liking a post doesn’t boost it, and it doesn’t spread it around like when you like something on twitter 

If you see art or writing you like, I encourage you to reblog it. My blog is a bit more unique in its subject matter and how my followers interact with it as i’m not writing fiction or creating artworks for people to admire and love; but the artists and writers on tumblr need those reblogs so more people can see their work and commission them or buy their products.

I have this problem with my main blog as well! Nobody reblogs my original posts ever, it’s like nobody ever even see them.

I know it helps to post regularly, but it’s hard when it feels like it’s all for nothing.

This is from this post I wrote yesterday, the notes probably won’t go up much more (or they wouldn’t if I had not linked it here) because only 1 in 10 people who saw it reblogged it. I didn’t out much effort into it and I could have done it a lot better, but this is just the latest in a trend on my blog. Every ask I answer or submission I post has the same story; it’s discouraging and means I get the same asks over and over because nobody sees the first time I answered it.

I cannot begin to imagine how discouraging it would be to write original short stories or original art and face the same problem.
