overheard these two guys talking and they're like. very obviously cowboys and one of them goes "man when I was young I used to think everyone had horses I didn't even know there were ppl w/o horses" and the other one goes "shows how horseified we are"
OH MY GOD YEAH jesus christ i am dumb. swear to god I've talked about tidbit tuesday like three times yesterday n today n STILL forgot AGH okokok some context for this one this is a scene rewrite for Tex that follows the ghost dallas n mark (though he's still alive. for now) golden bastards au! enjoy!! (also taggin my beloved mutual @damthosefandoms for bein my outlet for these insane ramblins <3)
Mason scowled 'n rolled his eyes for the hundreth time since we left Lem's. He'd clearly let me drive to try to get my mind off him, but I dunno how he figured I could with all his moanin'.
"God, is he dumb?" I ease down on the pedal a lil more, watchin' the dial bump up to fifty as the truck whips past a thirty-five sign. Mace doesn't notice. Actually, it's like no one notices.
I stretch myself up to see through the rearview mirror I forgot to adjust down n Mason was too worked up to holler at me to remember. He's still there. But that wasn't really the question. He's always been there. Long as I can remember. I dunno why. Sometimes I get the feelin' he does but he never tells me.
Dallas' been quiet since we hit Tusla. But he always gets like that. Won't really tell me why. Guess there's a lot of shit he won't ever explain. I frown at him through the mirror dejectedly.
"That's what messin' round with-" Mason uncrosses one arm, waves it through the air like some guy on TV when they get heated tryin' to prove a point. I tuned him out.
"What are you lookin' at?" He's stopped starin' out the window, that empty look in his dark eyes gone 'n replaced with a passin' imitation of his usual cocked eyebrow glare. I'd tried to recreate it to show Mace 'n he'd laughed real hard 'n called it a bitch stare. I think if Dal had been able to he mighta strangled Mason for that, but in my head that's what I still called it.
"Just wonderin' if you were this cryptic in life too." I mutter, still stretchin' as far as I can.
"Fuck of- Tex." Both him 'n Mason reach for the steerin' wheel at the same time, pure reflex, 'n I realize for the last thirty seconds I'd been driftin' solidly into the next lane.
"Jesus Christ, Tex. The way home's up there, not back there." He jerks his thumb over his shoulder n somewhere in my peripheral I sense more then see a passin' shadow flick over Dallas' face. But then he leans forward 'n scowls n it's gone.
"What're you tryin' to join to me already? Keep the truck on the road, you lil' dumbass."
"Aw, bug off." Mason twisted round in his seat with one eyebrow raised so high I'm surprised it didn't disappear right underneath the loose curls floppin' down his forehead.
"What now-" Dallas grinned. The kinda that showed off that silver tooth on his canine. I'd called it his horseshoe once. His bit a silver, y'know? He'd gotten a real kick outta that.
"Aw, not you Mace. Dallas." I waved a hand absently by his face, still leanin far over my shoulder. Mason huffed a sigh, but settled, foldin' his arms over his chest.
"Tell him to wait his own damn turn to bitch." Dallas pulls a face, raisin' a hand n openin' n closin' it like it was a sock puppet from those shows I used to like when I was real lil.
Like Mason can sense it, he rolls his eyes. "Jesus, it's like havin' two of you sometimes. 'Cept at least I can whack you." I open my mouth to complain about how unfair that is or that Mace wasn't even stuck with Dal I was. But I can already see him workin' himself back around to somethin' so I let him. "God, one day with you n maybe Lem would know what he signed up for."
Ah. Shoulda known he'd work his way back around to it.
Dal leans in close to Mason n narrows his eyes. "God. Y'know, your brother reminds me of someone." He cocks his head to the side n I pretend I can't see either of them, starin' resolutely through the windshield. There's someone standin' by the roadside ahead, thumb stuck out, head dartin' back 'n forth to the road as cars whip past. His back all drawn up straight like a spooked foal.
"Who else had such a stick up his ass like Mason, huh?" Dallas' is still yammerin' on, laughin' to himself like he's sharin' some kinda inside joke I don't get. Mason shakes his head in annoyance at some thought he ain't voicin' (about Lem I'm sure) 'n waves a hand beside his head like he was brushin' off a fly. The two actions line up so perfectly it's almost like Mason hears him for a moment.
"Y'know, I ain't never gonna get stuck nowhere-" I veer the truck to the shoulder 'n Mason starts, bracin' himself with a shin against the dashboard. "Jesus Tex, what are you-?"
The hitchhiker turns 'n the wanin' light from the sun down the road lights up his face. He's got gold eyes. Eyes that remind me of someone. From another life or somethin'.
Dal finally leans away from Mace, toothy grin painted up over the high lines of his face, joke already half up his throat. When he lays eyes on the boy it slips right away. Instead, there's a haunted, gaunt look. The kind I only see when I talk about pop-
"Tex don't." But whatever else he was gonna say dies right away, 'n the hitchhiker swings the door open.
