Everything you draw is so creative i struggle heavily with imagining creatures and if i dont theyre usually hard to translate to paper, are there any tips you have for how to overcome this? Do i just need to be more skilled or? What am I doing wrong?

My biggest advice for creature design is….don't take direct inspiration from other living people's art or trends in design. I take inspiration from living or extinct animals, designs from extinct cultures and sometimes someone's design philosophy from alive artist but that's rarely. I hope this helps you.

And always have a large number of very varied references, it helps not to get stuck in a single theme.

for as long as humans have taken photos, some of those humans have wanted to be photographed next to the really big cool thing they found

frequently those cool things have been sauropod femurs as it turns out

if I had a nickel for every time I have read a field report along the lines of “we couldn’t find the measuring tape, but the wall segment was 3 and 3/4th Jeremys long” with a quick math scribble for the approximate length and an annotation added in later of the actual measurement, I would have about a dollar ten. A person is a valid unit of measurement when all else fails.

This sent me down a massive historical rabbit hole, but, long story short: it’s called Romania because there were once Romans there.

In the 1960s, director/UC Santa Cruz staffer Sheldon Feldner wrote to Marvel Comics asking if an artist would be willing to draft costumes for the University of California’s production of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Jack Kirby happily obliged, and they’re pure Kirby.

The costumes were made out of military surplus, plastic, and vinyl.
