DIY Painted & Distressed Mason Jars Step 1) Make sure your mason jars are clean before you start & then spray each one with Valspar or any other kind of Chalkboard paint. Let them dry.

Step 2) Choose your colors! I chose 4 different pastel acrylic craft paints. Mine came from Michael’s but you can get them at Walmart too.

Step 3) Apply color to your mason jars with a small sponge brush. This will take several coats and you’ll need to make sure the jars are dry before adding another coat. Step 4) After your desired color has appeared and you’ve got it as thick as you want, then you’ll want to use some sandpaper and/or a paint chipper/scraper. I used both. And I was pleased with how they turned out.
