Season 2 of MIT's K12 science videos. Video editing, animation and compositing.
I'm super pleased to have gotten to work with Destin and his hugely successful Youtube series, Smarter Every Day, which has over 113 million views as of this posting. I created the animation of the Mantis shrimp's punching arm. I also created an animation for an earlier episode that explores the crazy hermaphroditic nature of clown fish:
"Why Does Jeff Bridges Support the Amazon Conservation Team?" - Video Editor
I helped edit this new, original web series of shorts from MIT showcasing real science from real students. This one’s about how robots are being developed these days.Â

Just released today — my music video for singer-songwriter Matt Gold's new single, "Appreciated", from his forthcoming album. This was an intense production: I developed the story and creative concept, shot all the photographs, researched all the archival media, and animated the whole thing in After Effects CC. It was a great collaboration and a great experience.
Reel: Director of Photography, Videographer
A quick highlight reel of some of the videography I've done in the past couple of years. Many different styles / cameras represented.
Kinetic Type (short) — "There is no boring information..."
A short reel of highlights from 18 episodes of instructional science materials that I animated and edited for MIT and Singapore University. The series was titled "Concept Vignettes" and was aimed at improving understanding of core concepts in various areas of the sciences.
I was both the producer and editor for this piece. Not long ago, the Prime Minister of Haiti visited MIT to put his full support behind the MIT-Haiti initiative. In this short "video album", we selected choice images and comments from the event, to give a succinct and vivid summary of the strong words and excitement of the day. The advocates behind the MIT-Haiti initiative face many difficulties in changing the paradigm towards bringing Haitian Creole language into the education system. The hope is that this video will help convince Haitians that the Prime Minister is serious, and committed to shaking things up in the upper ranks of Haiti's government.
I was fortunate enough to get access to film Bill Clinton at the Clinton Global Initiative in Chicago this year as part of my production work with the ongoing Sioux Wind Energy Project. In this segment he introduces the tribal leaders and other wonderful people who are working together to create the first-ever multi-tribal wind farm in the country. Note that this is a mostly raw take intended for later editing, not streamed viewing, so there is some jerkiness and camera setting alterations within. I am not responsible for the beautiful set or the lighting.
I wrote, directed, produced, animated, and edited this piece almost entirely all on my own, and all in a very short amount of time. I sat down with my client, Arent Fox LLP, who told me that they needed a short, 1-2 minute piece that could stand as a compelling summary and call to action for the timely campaign launch of the Sioux Wind Energy Project, which was being launched and featured at last week's prestigious Clinton Global Initiative (2013). We first sat together and went over the many, many details of the project's history, legal strategy, and broader themes. Originally, we had planned to edit existing video footage, but it quickly became clear that we could tell the bigger, more compelling story by assembling a narrated piece backed by dynamic, illustrative animations and select video clips. This piece represents my most advanced compositing and animation work to date.Â
Haiti is Ready (2013)
This video short that I edited was recently completed for screening at a prestigious event at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with some large names in attendance, including noted MIT faculty-member Noam Chomsky and the prime minister of Haiti, Laurent Lamothe! The video summarizes and illustrates the early efforts of the MIT-Haiti initiative, a project for which its founder, MIT professor Michel DeGraff, was recently awarded a $1 million grant. You can read more about the project in this Q&A:
"As far as I know, this is the first-ever project to create and evaluate a substantial body of online Kreyòl materials for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in higher education. We are helping create a new lexicon and new tools for science in Kreyòl and a new culture for deep learning in Haiti.
This culture is radically different from the traditional approach in Haiti — that is, rote memorization of French texts that few can understand. And this project can serve as a model for the millions of science-hungry students all around the world who speak local languages like Haitian Creole. So our project is breaking new ground both in linguistics and in STEM education."
This was a co-production with Free Energy Productions.
"The Battle for Oil & Power in Russia" (December 2012)
My original trailer for the most recent book of Professor Thane Gustafson of Georgetown University. The trailer for Wheel of Fortune was a challenging task and went through many variations. Gustafson's work is a detailed, historical account of the rich and troubled legacy of the Russian oil industry. We decided to focus on the strange and very troubling fact that Russia depends on oil for much of its government revenue.
Sonia Gutierrez: The Journey. The Impact. The Future (2012)
I was the video editor for this honorary video short. The Carlos Rosario Intl. Public Charter School has been an institution for decades now in Washington, D.C. — in fact, the only charter school in the city serving adults. The school has played an enormous role for providing job training and language skills for immigrants to the country. This video was part of an event to honor one of the school’s founders, Sonia Gutierrez, after 40 years of service to the community. Even Mayor Vincent Gray was in attendance! To learn more about her, read the honorary words she earned from the House of Representative.
Sony HVR-1000u Tutorial (2010)
Written, Shot, Edited and Produced by me. This is another of my early projects, one year after my DVX-100B tutorial. What a difference a year makes. You can see that we're still using tapes but we've ventured into HD. It's definitely cheesy — but perfect for what it is. It was a great experience in writing to succinctly convey the core concepts beneath a laundry list of dry instructions. Also, filming around Georgetown is always beautiful, even in winter.Â
Part 2 / Part 3
Panasonic DVX 100B Tutorial (2009) — Throwback!
One of my earliest larger projects was to write, shoot and edit a succinct overview of using the Panasonic DVX-100B — a solid favorite before HD became the norm on the web and the air waves. Part 2 can be found here. I produced this while working for the Gelardin New Media Center at Georgetown University. It now has over 60,000 views — not bad! I hope these cameras are still finding new owners. You don't need a $15,000 camera to tell a good story.
