I need more grief of Atem. Atem who made it to the afterlife and is overjoyed to be with his family again. Atem who, after the relief and joy wears off, finds himself feeling empty. Atem who spends hours walking around courtyards, talking to family and friends, playing games, and can't find anything to fill the emptiness with. Atem who realizes that his emptiness is caused by the absence of a certain someone.
He asks people about it, if it was normal to feel so much grief and loss over someone who he only knew for two years. He gets mixed responses but an overall 'It'll get easier with time'. Except it didn't. The emptiness slowly starts to eat away at him. It felt like his stomach was eating away at itself, but the starvation couldn't be satisfied with food. He needed Yugi. His other half. His other heart.
do it grieving
do it while the ground falls out from under you; do it while everything you loved goes up in smoke; do it while the dream of your future is still burning embers around you; build anew on the hot ashes of everything you worked for; keep going, keep loving, keep living, even as all you want is to turn back (there is no turning back; it is gone already); do it through grief, which feels like fear in the body
do it grieving
The tag I have seen most often on this post is "I needed to hear this," and I am so, so grateful to have said something that was needed. These words came out of the depths of my own grief, and I am so grateful to have made this small connection with others in the midst of it. Grief is isolating and indescribable, but none of us are alone.
That said, these tags were what I needed to hear:
we're all gonna make it
it's okay if you can't see how yet. you don't have to believe in better. for now it is enough to just keep going, and eventually the path will emerge. you are not alone. you are not lost in the woods forever. keep going. I love you.
People with skin conditions deserve better. People with acne, eczema, psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), and other skin conditions do not deserve to be treated like we're contagious or an eyesore. We deserve to be in public and show our skin and not feel ashamed because there is no shame in having a medical condition. We deserve to be free from insensitive questions and unsolicited advice. People with scars, including but not limited to those from burns, surgery, self-harm, injury, illness, and acne also deserve to live life without worrying about rude comments and questions. Don't comment on people's skin, especially strangers'. Even if you think you're being tactful.

This is relevant to art also because it is becoming increasingly difficult to find reference images online during simple searches.
How to Defend Books and Why
Danny Caine

You're invited to the book revolution!
Fight back against censorship and empower your community with this close look at the book banning movement.
In a moving, compulsively readable call to arms for readers everywhere, Danny Caine, bestselling author of How to Resist Amazon and Why and How to Protect Bookstores and Why, offers an expertly-crafted confrontation of far-right, Christian nationalist attempts to reshape American culture through ban campaigns targeting schools, libraries, bookstores, and prisons, with the aim to silence marginalized identities in life and in literature.
From the first-ever banned books display at San Francisco's City Lights in the 1950s to the rapid rise of so-called Moms For Liberty during the COVID-19 pandemic to attempts to silence Palestinian authors, Caine charts the course of repressive censorship campaigns, along with the creative and sometimes unlikely activists who've stood up against them.
Each chapter is based on a particular book banning episode, bolstered by research and legal precedent, and concludes with helpful takeaways for further reading or resistance.
Throughout, Caine approaches these heated issues with gentle openness harkening back to his work as a public school teacher and a bookseller.
He emphasizes our collective responsibility towards art, free speech, and each other.

Trying so hard to be very normal right now, but my dad just looked up from whatever wee world he was in, looked at me and asked, "What's going to happen to all my books?" in the most lost voice ever, and I'm not sure, but I think I just agreed to take several thousand books back with me to the US.
I am not joking. This house is wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling books across multiple floors. They had to get the floors reinforced to hold the weight when I was little.
Not to mention his DVDs, music CDs, VHS tapes, and the cassette tapes that he still listens to. I'm pretty sure some of these are lost media at this point. I should figure out how to archive some of them.
Everyone save this screenshot for when these shit pendants eventually get completely wiped
Lmao okay didn't even have to wait. This is from the same page
We respect how our new digital friends feel and think. However if you don't pay us $10/month forever we'll give them amnesia every 30 days.
Okay I have to reblog this again because wow??? Either they are very much not conscious and theyre just lying (true), or this company is full on admitting to abusing a being it wants you to believe is conscious. Wild. Wild that theyd say that.
I've been seeing this more lately and definitely thinking about it. Mostly with corporations that clearly want to go harder on "AI is conscious and alive" for pure marketing purposes, while still obviously behaving in the most exploitative manner possible. They want to have their cake and eat it too.
Large language models are not alive, they do not think, and companies know that. But IF they are, then your whole business model is just pure evil basically
Kind of reminds me of that one Ikea ad back in the 00s, about a lamp who saw all this joy in a household and was with the family for ever and then getting put out to the curb (in the rain!) to sad music as a brand new Ikea lamp was revealed through the window.
Then the Ikea-guy comes on screen and is like "Why are you sad? It's just a lamp."
And while it was kind of a funny little thing at the time.... it is a lot less funny now that this shit with Friend is being pulled. The reason I am sad is because the framing of the advertisement made me sad. Every emotional swell was crafted into the narrative they put before me. The shot composition, the musical score, the perspective and framing.... all of it is intending to make me sad.
The marketers at Ikea knew what narrative, lighting, music, and production can make people feel, and they did everything they could to make you feel it and then belittled you for it.
Now, they are making a pendant into this big emotional thing, using all the techniques in the book to appeal to people's emotions... and instead of belittling you for comedy this time they are trying to extort your feelings to exploit you for money.
The thing about anthropomorphisation is that we almost all do it, to some degree or another. We form attachments to objects just as readily as people sometimes and these companies are using every trick in the playbook to reinforce that connection.
They don't think "Friend" is alive, anymore than the Ikea commercial producers thought the old lamp was alive.
But damned if that will stop them from trying to make you believe it for their own ends.
Which isn't terribly hypocritical of the people making and marketing this thing, since they don't treat humans with all that much dignity and respect either.
Honestly, if these Friends were sentient and alive in ways we can be relatively objectively sure of - say a tiny person has been shrunk down and inserted into the cursed gem - they probably wouldn't treat them or the customers any differently because to them that part doesn't even matter at all.
whoops

learning to notice an absence of people of color is crazy. you start seeing it everywhere. ill see a random pic of characters or people or whatever and be like "these are all white people. why"
all the babies in those baby youtube video memes. humanized character posts. like. its the little innocent shit. and like, the people making those baby memes probably arent seeking out white babies. maybe theyre just easier to find. but why are they easier to find? a complicated question, surely... but you know what it probably comes down to. someone, somewhere, maybe a lot of someones in a lot of places, made a choice. maybe knowingly, maybe not. but they made a choice. it starts to make you feel like a conspiracy theorist!!
its really funny that after 2 months this post is still making racists come into my askbox treating me like im a horrible person for pointing out that sometimes people of color are excluded from things in visible and offputting ways. cry about it
