A Story of Belonging I sort of fell into festivals It wasn't planned I returned from my first Burning Man in 2010 blown wide open by the freedom and sense of community I felt It led me to the Burning Man Regional in my area which led to me getting involved which led to word getting out that I knew how to spreadsheet But I never quite felt like I belonged A yoga teacher told me once We teach that which we most need to learn For as much volunteer culture as I was infusing in an effort to give others a sense of belonging through participation through contributing their time and energy I still felt a dissonance I couldn't shake partly because I couldn't understand how I'd landed in this line of work to begin with and partly because I could never reconcile why I and so many, many others were contributing monumental amounts of time to something so temporary to a party to entertainment culture Larry Harvey speaks about two kinds of people doers & spectators Both are necessary he said one informs & influences the other I'm hearing that resound in my head more often now as I take the next steps in creating what comes next in saying thank you for all of the experiences that led to where I am now including the uncomfortable parts my deepest hope is that where my footfalls lead now arrive at a deeper sense of belonging in the world a deeper sense of responsibility of opportunity to engage with the world around us to leave a positive impact and to spend less moments looking around wondering whether we're truly a part of it whether we're part of the "in" crowd or not less time with so much focused attention on DJ culture recognition that for dj's & music; you grew out of this it didn't grow out of you and that the music you perform is a heartbeat of what already exists from the people who built the stage you stand on 📷@speyerphoto #thisisart #persepsion #perception #burningman #festivals #culture #belonging #nextsteps #doers #larryharvey #realtalk https://www.instagram.com/p/CL4XPC_h6m0/?igshid=rw8d1dal98nw

Moving through heartbreak quite literally starts with movement After impenetrable periods of grief that leave you immobilized & unwilling to get out of bed for days at a time...or worse, following a zombified routine of bed > desk > bed in desperation to distract yourself from all of it After the why & why nots & the fury start to dull you begin to move First deep lazy stretching the kind where you lay on the floor and feel the foreignness of your limbs Then you buy a mirror from the thrift store the biggest one you can confidently strap to the roof of your car by yourself the one you wobble up the stairs through some strange miracle of physics You're still uncertain about the person staring back at you still don't fully trust her But you're curious somehow about her movements How her spine curves how her arms raise to the sky how her eyelids close sometimes abruptly without warning sometimes so gently you feel lulled to stillness just by the sight of it Then you decide you're going to get up walk out the front door every morning unsure & uncaring about where you're going exactly but starting another round of this must be better with the open sky & with each day you feel the air around you start to lighten just a little let's not get ahead of ourselves yet 𝘭𝘦𝘧𝘵 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘦𝘵𝘤𝘩 a little at a time, dear one Until you start to trust her again that reflection staring back at you and you start to remember that the heartbreak started long before the relationships ended before your first experience of betrayal at 35 years of life before 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘴 The moment you stopped trusting yourself prioritized other people's opinions is when the ache in your heart crept in you were just too "busy" to notice So now you have this gift this tool available to you in any moment for all future moments of uncertainty or challenge or yes-no-maybe-so's And now she smiles at you more often with such love & kindness twinkling in her eyes that you wonder how you got so lucky to be in this body that's been ready to move with you the whole time hello old friend let's have a dance shall we #thisisart #perception #persepsion #movement #dance https://www.instagram.com/p/CL2BOV9BY7u/?igshid=16uq6s6763aam
