Maria can't be sure that this man is who she thinks he is. She doesn't know his face, shielded as she's been by her family from the darker side of the world, and the people out there who might want to hurt her.

But no shield is perfect. No-one wants to tell her anything, but Maria knows - about the bad man who took her father away. Papa and Will both wanted to stop him, because he wanted to hurt a lot of people, and that's why she can't see papa again... He died to protect her, they'd said. The man before her now looks just like the way the people describe him - Louis - when they talk in the tavern and out on the streets, but... Maria knows she really can't be sure.

...But that doesn't stop her heart from racing. Why is he here? After taking papa away, does he want to take her as well? Maria hates the way her hands tremble and the fear in her gut. She hates the way she wants to run, and the way she hesitates, not knowing what to do or say. But even so... he's already noticed her by now. So she has to be brave, just this once...

The archmage waved his attendants away, dismissing their obvious concerns about having done so. Although doubtful she was here to give her support, the man would give her the answers she so sought.*
