i don’t know how many people on tumblr know about “verticals” - they’re cheaply made soap operas that are filmed vertically so you can watch them on your phone. they’re infamous in the acting world because of the poor writing and nonsensical plots - almost always has something to do with a mafia boss or a vampire or a werewolf - and they always have insane titles like “pregnant with the ceo’s baby” or “forced to marry the alpha king.” i come across tons of them on casting websites and they all have wild titles and descriptions but none of them, None of Them, have truly grabbed me like the title i saw today:

Reyna Cohan is on Tiktok and YouTube and has many short and long form videos, and I really love the one minute to feel less like shit videos on TikTok, not sure if they're on Shorts or anything.

I think cities should have coin-operated nests you can open for a small fee and then stay in for a pre-set length of time. Little discreet capsule hotel type places you can crawl inside to do whatever you please while the outside shows that it's occupied and can only be opened from the inside. Just scattered around in whatever odd locations happened to have an empty space big enough to install one. Make the locations odd but typical enough that people learn what kind of places to start looking for one even in cities they've never been in, just the same as how squirrels don't remember where they hide all their stuff, they just look for stored food from the kind of places where a squirrel would hide it. Like you gotta get a place to sleep, so you start looking for a random round door in a wall.

When I was in grade school I used to send emails to biologists and zoologists asking them questions to get answers to include in school projects I was working on, and would cry when they did not respond because I thought I was stupid for thinking that some random kid would ever be deserving of a response from someone who does something as smart and cool and important as *checks notes* studies frog fungus.

Remember 4 months ago when the CEO of this platform harassed and chased a trans woman off this website just for posting her transition timeline, then chased her to other social media platforms to continue harassing her, and threatened to call the FBI if she continued disputing the multiple dubious terminations of her blogs that did not violate tumblr's terms of service in any way? And despite tumblr staff insisting that the CEO was acting against their interests, the broad transmisogyny evident in the site's culture and moderation policy has still not been adequately addressed?

Authors, agents, publishers: every part of the industry is seeing the strain of five years of escalating anti-LGBTQ censorship.

When Life Gives You Corpses is a brilliant YA about a cursed praying mantis who falls for a young witch. Yield Under Great Persuasion is a raunchy, but surprisingly sweet story about two men repairing their relationship. Fabulous Bodies is a horror story about a queer rockstar rising from the dead.

This is Where the Future Bleeds is a fantasy set in a vividly imagined land, where two women (who happen to kiss) are the key to healing the broken sky. You're No Better is a story about a teen struggling in the shadow of his murderous parent. Oil on Canvas is about a woman who finds disturbing paintings in the home of her dead mother.

and then here's a list of 26 queer books by Black authors set to publish this year, and a 10 upcoming books by trans authors. if you want to fight back against queer censorship, use your wallet! or (if that's not an option) you can contact your local library and ask them to stock a copy.

okay but also women's beauty standards also help enforce the illusion of the sexgender binary, yanno? like we see woman and men as clean separate biological categories, and that's easy to understand in large part because our idea of a "man" and a "woman" look different- men are hairy, rugged, have short or sorta dry head hair, have small eyelashes, and did i mention the body hair and facial hair? women have smooth clear skin, no facial or body hair, head hair that's long and well-kept, thick eyelashes, large rich lips... except the qualities i ascribed to "men" are just most adult humans without the work women are expected to do to maintain their appearance; haircare, skincare, makeup, shaving.

a world where women are not expected to do that, where we can have pores and fuzzy cheeks and leg hair and blemishes and dry hair and not be punished for it, it becomes so much clearer how male and female are variations on the same form, categories with fuzzy edges and overlap rather than two distinct boxes with a hard wall between them.

"Racialised" is much better than PoC but I've been leaning a lot on the concept of racial markedness. Because that allows us to make statements like "the name Jamal is racially marked in USA". Rather than saying something like "Jamal is a PoC name", a nonsense statement, saying it's racially marked in USA allows us to contrast with societies like Albania or the Arab countries where the name Jamal is ordinary, thus unmarked.

It's a concept I've kind of imported from linguistic analysis; saying a speech pattern is more or less marked does not really allow us to avoid the subject of who's doing the marking. A statement like "womens' speech is more marked in Lakota" necessitates that we understand that it's the Lakota who are marking womens' speech. A foreigner can't tell the difference and probably doesn't understand why it would thus be weird to see a man using speech patterns associated with women, in the same way an Albanian wouldn't understand why USA people would think Jamal is a Black name.

You! You get it. In my view, if someone is saying "racialised" or "racially marked" without acknowledgement of context, they are doing it in a way that is gramatically incorrect.
