there was a disastrous performance of Macbeth at the Old Vic by Peter O’Toole and apparently there was this one part in the play one night where a Servant comes in and should say “Your wife, my lord, is dead” but what ACTUALLY happened was
Servant: …My wife, my lord, is dead.
Macbeth: Well, what about my wife?
Servant: Oh yeah. She’s dead too.
Macbeth:
Servant: There’s a lot of it about.
Honestly, this could have been amazing. That exchange is the intro to the 'tomorrow and tomorrow' soliloquy, which is pretty much explicitly saying "life's no better than morons and bad actors". I'm imagining O'Toole doing doing it with a few very pointed glances at the hapless servant:
Life's but a walking shadow, a POOR PLAYER, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more. It is a tale Told by an IDIOT, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.
