Warrior cats will have like 15 scenes in a row of characters scoffing at the idea of becoming a doctor/spiritual guide who has so much importance in the Clans as the typically sole spokespeople of Literal Cat God because [checks notes] they don't fight people. Okay then

I've finally started on AVOS for my reread, and it is genuinely downright BAFFLING how the book basically constantly asserts that 1. Being a doctor is an undesirable role for everyone and thus it is typical for people to be forced into it, and 2. Having three doctors is absurd. HUH???

Like okay first of all. Warriors historically has a really bad grasp on what the cats actually do with their time that isn't just working. We rarely ever get explicit recreational scenes or time anymore, and there's a sort of horrifying implication that most days the cats just don't GET recreational time at all. It's weird and bizarre. But to have that extended into the idea that the cats are SO obsessed with work that the concept of *being a doctor* is societally repulsive to the point it is *uncommon* for it to be chosen willingly? WHY? FOR WHAT REASON? IS EVERYONE SO ADDICTED TO THE ONE SINGULAR JOB THAT IS PRESENTED AS DEFAULT THAT IT IS SOCIETALLY WEIRD TO BECOME [checks notes] AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FIGURE OF AUTHORITY AND SPIRITUAL GUIDE.

Throughout PO3 but primarily OOTS, StarClan is presented as genuinely flawed and distinctly NOT allknowing. And to a degree, the books acknowledge this! Jayfeather is CONSISTENTLY irritated when Yellowfang comes to talk to him because she fundamentally just scolds him and gives him bad advice, and there are MULTIPLE scenes where Jayfeather DIRECTLY calls out how StarClan is making a mistake, and overrides their orders to do what he thinks is better. But... this... goes nowhere. StarClan may make mistakes but the Dark Forest kills babies and old people so actually they have never had a correct opinion or any legitimate critique of StarClan or Clan life at all. Sol didn't let babies or old people eat so he couldn't have had any possible useful critique on StarClan or Clan life at all. Mothwing is an idiot for not believing in StarClan so clearly she can't have any intelligent thought towards the flawed ways StarClan is treated by the Clans.

What is even the point? What are they trying to get at? There is no grander "StarClan knew the way the whole time" theme, but there's also no follow-up to the concept StarClan might be flawed! StarClan worship continues and every time StarClan fucks up it is brushed away as a fluke and no grander changes occur. They're fundamentally not trying to say anything because to say anything about how StarClan worship is inherently flawed would be to make a statement on how the Christian religions that are blatantly being riffed off of come with literally any sort of baggage whatsoever, and the authors would rather destroy any semblance of a thematic core or meaning than imply there are ways to live a good life that aren't "being a good little Christian and doing everything God says"

Genuinely I just do not know what Warriors is even trying to say at this point. Caring for your Clan is directly antithetical to StarClan's own wishes and demands yet at no point is it ever presented as a genuine thought that maybe the worship of StarClan in the way it is now is unhealthy. Mothwing brings up the idea that StarClan is just dead cats, including the irrational and stupid dead cats, and so to worship them as allknowing is like saying you should believe everyone with no thoughts of your own, but Jayfeather dismisses her! He shuts her down because he finds her idiotic! The scene where Mothwing talks to him was BOOKS AGO and Mothwing hasn't even been THOUGHT OF since, other than the occasional "Jayfeather thinks a mean thought at Mothwing for being late to a Moonpool gathering".

Genuinely just. What are they trying to say. What is even the intent behind their words. What do the authors think they are saying by portraying StarClan as cats who fuck up and make mistakes and actively harm the Clans through their bullheadedness, yet portraying a lack of belief in StarClan or a refusal to follow StarClan orders as inherently foolish (Unless you're Jayfeather, I guess)

Okay, so, whenever people talk about this line it's about how vile it is when taking into consideration how Ashfur, a man who attempted multiple murders, gets to enter heaven and we're told it's fine and StarClan doesn't judge people, whereas cats like Squirrelflight and Leafpool, who were given direct guidance from StarClan, are threatened with eternal damnation for their actions. Now, this is absolutely a discussion that needs to happen, it's utterly vile and deeply misogynistic at its core that it happens. However I'm at a point where I'm just... what the fuck did they even think they were writing at this point?

"It is not StarClan's place to judge" in the arc about heaven and hell? This arc? This is the arc you claim heaven can't judge? Warriors is, at its core, INCREDIBLY Catholic, a religion that EXTREMELY EXPLICITLY HAS THE ARBITER OF HEAVEN JUDGING PEOPLE FOR ENTRY. HUH?

Now, part of the thing here is that the concept of cats getting trials just simply was not in the mind of the authors at this point. Squirrelflight's Hope is years and years away from being written, and isn't even written by the same team that wrote PO3 and OOTS, and we see through moments like Darkstripe meeting Tigerstar in the Dark Forest that clearly he was NOT given a trial of any sort, rather that he just woke up and was confused as to why StarClan was so miserable and terrible.

...SO WHO IS JUDGING? Does God, capital G God exist in Warriors? We know that StarClan cats aren't the creators of (most) prophecies and rather just recieve them, OOTS quite literally opens up with a bunch of StarClan cats saying they know who the third cat is thanks to a shared dream they all had on the night of her birth. At the same time, StarClan is also DIRECTLY shown to be in the wrong THROUGHOUT OOTS, StarClan's insistence that only one of the Clans will survive and that all of the Clans need to isolate themselves entirely, something that Jayfeather directly doubts and that is demonstrably incorrect given the events of the series. StarClan can be wrong! Directly! Explicitly! And they're not the judges of character! Nor do they make prophecies! SO WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO SAY WITH ANY OF THIS?

StarClan isn't God but also they can't be doubted or challenged but also they can be wrong but also anything less than full belief and trust in StarClan is laughably wrong and stupid. Genuinely I just can not fathom what the fuck the authors were trying to get at with this. The Catholicism bleeds through at every angle yet they seem to not even remotely understand any element of how Christian religions work in the first place. I know these books are badly written I know they weren't thinking any of this out in the first place but I still just find it so endlessly baffling. TPB at least understood the religion it was riffing off of to some extent! The Catholic themes of TPB are clear! How do PO3 and OOTS, demonstrably more entrenched in the religious aspect of their world more now than ever, seemingly fails to comprehend its own theology, much less the theology it is clearly trying to emulate
