Hey I just thought of something and I thought you would be just the person. Is it a coincidence that mid-century (roswell style) aliens were skinny, androgynous, 'unhealthy' (green/grey) and had big brains as the same time mccarthyism encouraged suspiscion towards gays and socialists/intellectuals? Or did those little green/grey men just represent that whatever wasnt a brawny american soldier (or curvy housewife) was an alien? Am i silly or late here

As it would happen, I listen to paranormal radio all the time so I know the aliens you’re describing. Those are called “grays” or “gray aliens”. They actually predate the McCarthy era by quite a bit. Here’s from the Wikipedia page:

In the 1893 article “Man of the Year Million”, the well-known author H.G. Wells had envisioned the possibility of humanity transformed into a race of grey-skinned beings; who were perhaps 1 meter tall, with big heads and large, oval-shaped pitch black eyes. In his 1901 book The First Men in the Moon, Wells described Selenites (natives of the Moon) as having grey skin, big heads, and large black eyes. He also briefly describes aliens resembling Greys brought down to Earth as food for the Martians, who were the antagonist characters in his 1898 novel The War of the Worlds.

In 1933, the Swedish novelist Gustav Sandgren, using the pen name Gabriel Linde, published a science-fiction novel called Den okända faran (The Unknown Danger), in which he describes a race of extraterrestrials: “…the creatures did not resemble any race of humans. What was most extraordinary about them were the eyes—large, dark, gleaming, with a sharp gaze. So he wrote that in 1893. About 40 years prior to that Darwin had published his theory of evolution. But evolution didn’t really become popularly accepted until the 1890s, because in 1891 they found the “Java Man” which was the first non-human hominid that could be confirmed. They’d found neanderthals before but they were too close to human to prove they weren’t. So yeah, I bet that’s probably it. Being able to imagine non-human hominids and space at the same time.
