The Interdependency by John Scalzi
You’ve got several star systems scattered light years apart, a feudal universe that crowns the emprox, the leader of the church and all of the Interdependence.
The guilds, merchants, and bureaucrats are going about their goddamn lives. Here is a book review for: The Collapsing Empire and The Consuming Fire by John Scalzi,
Thing is about the future, you got the memory room. A place for Cardenia to brush up on her long-dead predecessors. Every emprox that has ever lived, more than one thousand years of the ruling class, served up with avatar precision.
Do you want to know if your doctrine is a sham? Ask the memory room. Do you want to know the contents of personal data vaults and flow shoals that allow for space/time travel? Ask the memory room.
It was a fun read. I wanted to pretend the books were about the collapse of the Western Empire. Liberal democracies interdependent on eachother for resources, money, power, leadership, money, power and money. Did I mention money?
Here’s my take on the strong female character, Kiva Lagos. She’s one of those badass kind of ladies, always fucking and drinking and getting money and fucking. It’s gotta be a 2018 book.
No problems here. John Scalzi has my vote. It’s nothing transformational but it will prevent you from [insert terrible vice here]. At least for a little while.

The Glass Bead Game by Hermann Hesse book review
The Glass Bead Game, a refinement of the world's greatest achievements: music, mathematics, language. The players bring beautiful symmetry to all of these things, using symbols of their own making, attempting to define the solution and genius of man.
The Glass Bead Game is a sham, a waste of valuable time and energy. Life becomes an aristocratic pie eating contest.
The refinement of culture into the intellectual aristocracy is a dangerous precipice. Culture cannot be without the flesh, without nature, without the tides of humanity.
Herman Hesse is demonstrating what a progressive, intellectual aristocracy looks like. It's a fakery, a mockery, a sham, a waste. Much like a monastic, self-important religious sect.
Through the idiot narrator and his worthless love affair with hierarchy we realize that Oneness is not the refinement of knowledge, it is NOT The Glass Bead Game, but a delicate balance of Yin and Yang, of Good and Evil, of Highs and Lows, Night and Day, Light and Dark, Chaos and Order.
In many ways the book reflects perfectly on our current state of affairs. The Glass Bead Game is being played by ignorant social media dilettantes everywhere, sharing and refining their stupid posts, never creating anything new, pretending to understand something when they understand nothing. If the 1960s counter-culture perceived their world collapsing from the weight of consumerism and capitalism (moving away from nature), it follows almost perfectly that the future has built the Order of Castalia, the keepers of the game. The hierarchy is your dumb social media networks.
The book was difficult to read. The subject of aristocracy and religious zealotry makes me want to throw up. How abhorrent all this talk of sanctimonious art and virtue, a perversion of music and everything nice in the world. Castalia can suck it.
When I finally made it to the end, I was grateful to Mr. Hesse. He completely affirmed my absolute hatred for all things sanctimonious when the main character, Joseph Knecht, the great master of The Glass Bead Game, told all of his lords to fuck off and left his high position for a real place in the world.
Thank you, Herman Hesse.
Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse - Book Review
My attempt to move away from English speaking pulp-fiction.
I began with a simple search term: ‘German Authors’. The query took no more than 0.6 seconds to complete.
And so my journey begins; me in an uncomfortable leather sitting chair and Siddhartha starting in 600 B.C. The book was devoured on one day, DEC 11 2017.
What is this tale? A man seeking, inward and outward, using the stale writings of long-dead god/people, and also using the pleasures of the flesh. He meets the Buddha and basically tells him to fuck off, "I don't want to be like you." I'm paraphrasing.
He is easily seduced by the power of ass (a beautiful courtesan) and the sickening game of commerce. He knows it's all meaningless.
Siddhartha claims that time does not exist, that life is transitory, like a river.
The search for meaning in words is a fools errand. The doctrine of all men is nonsense. Wisdom cannot be taught. It's a tale of rebirth and redemption. Siddhartha reforms himself several times over in an effort to be happy, from child, to man, to penitent believer, to carnal merchant, to ferryman by the river.
It is refreshing to know, in the depths of our sorrow, we can repulse and even laugh at time. We understand that wisdom is the river, the ineffable transitory, to be defined only by you. Only by YOU.
Eye Of The Needle by Ken Follett - Book Review
Jolly good book- as the goddamn English would say. By the way, it’s not true what David Rose says in this book, limey English bastards WILL fuck your wife in the other room while you sleep.
This book is fantastic. Dumbass David Rose crashes his sports car the night of his wedding and ends up losing his legs. He feels so sorry for himself that he refuses to fuck his wife so she ends up fucking a German spy.
Lots of ruthless killing and espionage bullshit happens in the middle. It’s a page turner with a proper blockbuster climax ending.
Now for my personal recollections: Subtract Hitler, Genocide, Antisemitism, Gestapo, the SS and all of that nasty German jingoism shit and tell me honestly that the English are superior to the Germans. Certainly, they are not.
Star Trek New Frontier - The Returned by Peter David - A book review
I don’t know. The Federation is like the DOD. And Captain Calhoun is the weak-ass captain that believes in hierarchy and duty over his own family. Fuck the New Frontier. And fuck the DOD.
Artemis by Andy Weir - A book review
If you have a 5th grade reading level you might enjoy Artemis by Andy Weir.
Andy Weir has the science and math all wrong on this one. It's a story told by a twenty-something Islamic girl talking about casual sex and reusable condoms on the moon. The economics are WAY OFF. Only a fifth grader would believe that lunar gift-shops and reusable condoms make economic sense. It's all very sophomoric and stupid.
I like the international characters, but Andy Weir doesn't know shit about being a young Saudi female. His first person narrative is annoying.
Whilst reading, pretend you're a fifth grader, pretend you're ignorant, you may enjoy this ridiculous book.
Islamic female overpowers moon mobsters. Islamic terrorist destroys moon harvesting machines and aluminum smelting factory. Something doesn't add up.
Origin by Dan Brown - A book review
I’m starting to understand what massively published pulp-fiction is. It’s this book. It’s excellent. It has all of the required plot constructions, character development, and climax. There is nothing negative I can say about this magnificent story. It’s a calculated formula and Dan Brown has all of the correct variables.
One element of pulp-fiction is its requirement to repeat, retell and recap major themes and plot drivers. Did the story just introduce a twist? Well, you can be sure it will be reviewed again, and maybe a third time-- because people are stupid and need to be driven like a nail, pounded repeatedly on the head, over and over again until it drives home.
This is all fine and fantastic. I like the easiness of it. It’s perfect. I wish I wrote the story. I don’t know why Winston had to die at the end? The final reveal, orgasm, climax-- Edmond's presentation and AI murder/suicide, was an excellent payoff. I kept wondering how Mr. Brown was going to finish. He did a nice job.
Highlights:
“May our philosophies keep pace with our technologies. May our compassion keep pace with our powers. And may love, not fear, be the engine of change.”
Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm. --- WINSTON CHURCHILL
The Invisible Man by RALPH ELLISON
Praise to the whorish mothers of democracy and all glory to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, USA. The true experiment of capitalism, fear, and The CONSTITUTION. Amen.
A man, Ralph Waldo ELLISON – not Emerson you dimwits. It’s RALPH ELLISON. Born from Oklahoma City. Born one generation away from slave holding man-machines. Ralph Ellison, a man telling you, pleading with you to know anything! Anything at all! And you fail and fuck it up to the depths of hell.
The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison.
My highlights:
“Why, goddamit, why did they insist upon confusing the class struggle with the ass struggle, debasing both us and them -- all human motives?”
“Life is to be lived, not controlled; and humanity is won by continuing to play in face of certain defeat. Our fate is to become one, and yet many -- This is not prophecy, but description. Thus one of the greatest jokes in the world is the spectacle of the whites busy escaping blackness and becoming blacker every day, and the blacks striving toward whiteness, becoming quite dull and gray. None of us seems to know who he is or where he’s going.”
Ralph Ellison
The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin
Why does Syenite have to be such a bitch?
I'm just a white man with white heterosexual feelings. Does that mean my sci-fi needs to be conservative drivel?
I downloaded this book after realizing how fucked up the Hugo awards have become.
Did you know there is a bunch of ranting white men that call themselves the sad puppies. They're part of the Hugo electorate that systematically vote against black, female authors writing about gay, trans, racist themes.
I'm not talking about hot gay sex and transsexual harlequin romance. I'm talking about characters that are gay, bisexual, transsexual and non-white. The female protagonist is a dreadlocked rogga.
And now I want to talk about how old institutions die because they are old and faggoty. Not faggoty gay, more like faggoty cigarettes in a tin ashtray. It's time for the Hugos to die.
But really, the female character Syenite is a bitch. She's not likable. Maybe that's because I'm a white man in a white man's world? The story is interesting and moves along with excellent pacing. The entire time reading this book I was thinking, "oohhh, this must be a metaphor for institutional racism".
Spoiler alert- The entire book is a metaphor for institutional racism.
Personal note: I believe in Freedom and Liberty for all. That includes sticking or tucking your cock into whatever hole u want. If you are a woman trapped in a man's body I will fight for your right to be treated like a proper damsel.
I believe that strong black men and women have long been denied opportunity because white people are imperial bastards.
I also believe that space/time can be manipulated through quantum mechanics. Nah- I don't believe that last part.
The Longest Voyage by Robert Silverberg
To circle the globe in a wooden ship! To defend against mutiny! To bring idol worshiping infidels the message of Christ! Make sure you baptize the indigenous girl before you rape her. You have been commanded by Papal decree to NEVER sleep with a pagan!
It's easy to use snarky retrospect to amuse yourself with how little these brave circumnavigators knew of their journey and indeed their whereabouts! But this kind of history requires snark, because it all seems so fun and adventurous 6 centuries later!
It's a real comedy of errors, a gripping tale of determination and bravery!
I do not know the difference between Portuguese and Spanish maritime excellence. It appears Magellan is both Portuguese and Spanish, one being his birthplace and the other being the financial conduit of his great journey.
And then there's Drake- A Protestant Englishman whose hatred of Catholics made him a plundering pirate, the favorite pirate of Queen Elizabeth because he brought her Spanish and Portuguese gold!
Imagine careening your ship in a calm bay and meeting the natives! An extraordinary time in history!
I should also note for my personal recollection that this book is of the physical kind you can touch and turn actual pages. It was not available in the digital format. It is a pain in the ass to hold this massive tome above my heaving breast as I scan the text to take in its meaning.
Book Review - Death’s End
Written by Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin and translated by Ken Liu, this book delivers Eastern culture and glorious sci-fi safely into the hands of a western simpleton like myself. The Chinese names, tea ceremonies, and regard for political structure are given descriptions by the translator. I'm well on may to devouring this trilogy.
Can massive world organizations really work? Is globalization a fictional dream? Are media outlets around the world making 'globalism' the next 'communism'? Yes, they are. You are afraid because you are stupid.
Chin Xieng is the meek female protagonist that failed to activate the dark forest deterrence plan. This incredibly passive character gave her entire company to a man that attempted to assassinate her.
The book is badass in all the correct badass ways. Alien civilizations are inundating earth with sophon particles that are disrupting any future advancements in physics- an excellent form of sabotage.
The universe has one law: Kill or be killed.
It sounds savage. If nature is any indication, the idea is probably true.
Will dark forest deterrence work? If we promise to broadcast the location of an alien planet will their home world be destroyed? Mutually assured destruction in several dimensions.
“When humans are lost in space, it only takes five minutes to reach totalitarianism.”
“Do you think if you stand on your hands, you've lifted the earth?”
“The ultimate fate of all intelligent beings has always been to become as grand as their thoughts.”
Science fiction perfection.
Book Review - Fall of Giants
The Earl's sister gives the German military attaché a hand job. The Earl is a British war-hawk who wants glory on the battlefield.
This piece of World War One historical fiction is about the British and Russian labor union’s attempt to destroy aristocracy and the European circle-jerk that followed. Don't let those bastards distract you with meaningless war over ineffable borders!
It turns out that I quite like reading about war and sex- not so much about politics or European aristocracy.
The Russian Bolsheviks are paid by the Germans to promote peace and end the fighting. The uprising of the workers is destroying the bourgeoisie middle-class in Russia. Did this stuff really happen during World War One? Did Germany really pay Lenin to promote peace? Did the conservative British government secretly fight Lenin's Bolshevik uprising? I don't know, and I'm too much of a glutton to read a real history book.
President Wilson was elected on the promise of peace and non-involvment in the European conflict. He couldn't just stand by and watch American merchant ships being sunk by German u-boats? Well, that sounds like a load of shit, but I'm pretty sure that was the real excuse Wilson used to drag America into the war.
Are there history books claiming the battles, starvation, and killing of World War One gained anything to anybody?
At least we can all point to the Nazis for World War Two?
SevenEves - Book Review
Do you like orbital mechanics and virgin birth? If so, please read this excellent sci-fi story by Neal Stephenson. This book, not unlike The Martian by Andy Weir, tries to convince you that our current technology can almost sustain humanity through interplanetary sojourns and catastrophe. Of course, we all know this is complete fiction. If you were stranded on Mars you would certainly die. If the moon explodes into a million-trillion pieces, as it does in SevenEves, the resulting ‘Hard Rain’ of moon debris would melt the atmosphere and everybody on earth without fail. However, this book would like you to imagine an arc of humanity struggling for survival in the cruel vacuum of space.
This was an excellent read. Terms like apogee and perigee through the orbital elliptical will become familiar to you. How much energy do we need for the delta vee? Make sure your robots can swarm.

The Man in the Maze by Robert Silverberg
Muller is self-exiled within an ancient alien maze. Nobody knows why the aliens built the maze and Muller is the only person to successfully navigate to its center.
But now Muller’s affliction is catching up to him and his past relationships are calling. Will he decide to leave the maze? Will he decide to sacrifice himself once again for the good of humanity?
Some of my highlights:
“When I was eighteen,” Muller said, “I was with a girl out in the woods on Earth, in the California forest preserve, and we made love, and it wasn’t exactly my first time but the first time it worked out in any kind of way, and afterward we were lying on our backs looking up at the stars and I told her I was going to go out and walk around among them.”
“An extremely tall man is better suited to command than to advise”
“We develop everything in solitude except character”
