gender envy is nice but what about gender appreciation? what if i don't exactly wanna go with my own gender in that direction but i'm still like "love what you've done with the place" when seeing someone's gender presentation?

Mutuals line up I'm giving you all one of these bad boys
Happy pride month specifically to folks on the asexual and aromantic spectrum who oftentimes feel isolated and left out of the conversation. You belong here as much as the rest of us and I hope that you are all loved in a way that is comforting to you.
Happy Pride Month everyone! Remember 4 months ago when the CEO of this platform harassed and chased a trans woman off this website just for posting her transition timeline, then chased her to other social media platforms to continue harassing her, and threatened to call the FBI if she continued disputing the multiple dubious terminations of her blogs that did not violate tumblr's terms of service in any way? And despite tumblr staff insisting that the CEO was acting against their interests, the broad transmisogyny evident in the site's culture and moderation policy has still not been adequately addressed?
Remember that staff is continuing to nuke the blogs of trans women even after all of this. Remember this post when they call this site the queerest place on the internet again this month
It's 2 years later. It's gotten worse. Happy pride month.
I'm a pacifist like institutionally but I'm absolutely certain that violence solves at least some problems on a much smaller level. I don't believe in wars or nuclear weapons or military campaigns I do believe in the power of that guy who punched the nazi in the face so hard his entire media presence immediately crumbled to dust
for the record im not technially 100% anti-AI, in the sense that its a broad category of tech being lumped under one umbrella term so it feels over-zealous to say i hate all of it all the time forever. but i also think trying to discuss what it actually IS good for is difficult right now when i cant take one step without something trying to convince me to use chatgpt to summarize my life and speed up my hobbies and turn my friends into chatbots and optimize my life into oblivion. i am certain there is nuance to the topic but can we stop cramming the square peg into the round hole before you start trying to sell me on the legitimate benefits of the square peg. please.
Neural Nets have existed for decades and are genuinely useful. It's a form of AI that recognizes patterns, and can do stuff like identify cancer cells, tell whether an egg is fertilized or not, detect fraud, and optimize routes.
Those are Expert Systems, tuned to do exactly one thing. If you (say) ask a medical expert system a question about financial law, it's useless. The autopilot that flies a 787 has no idea how to drive a truck on the freeway. A Coulter Counter is excellent at identifying lymphocytes in a blood sample but can't predict the next card in a blackjack game.
And so on.
The problem with so-called generalized AI (AGI) is that we don't have that yet. It doesn't exist. It MIGHT some day, but AGI has been "10 years away" since the 1980s. The goals keep moving as we learn more about how people and machines process data.
But the current crop of AI techbros have been selling generative Large Language Model AI (LLM) as AGI because generative systems do a good job of faking it. There's no actual thought going on, merely the illusion of thought via predicting the next word in a sentence accurately.
If you let a human toddler listen to 800 hours of YouTube car influencer videos, that toddler might end up sounding like a car influencer. They'd parrot horsepower numbers and 0 to 60 times, mention EV range and MSRP numbers.
But they wouldn't understand any of it.
That's ChatGPT.
And yeah, it's worse than useless because it doesn't even know when it's lying or hallucinating. It just babbles convincingly until you stop it.
But for techbros to make money selling that as "AI"? It's the perfect scam, especially if you don't understand how it works.
I fucking hate it.
queer people on this site really make me feel like a confused straight guy at pride. the discourse here could kill a man
"why polyamorous people aren't valid" "mspec lesbians AREN'T okay actually" "aroallos are freaks" "he/him dni. cis men dni" "this post is for non-men only" yessss and the one with long hair goes in the girl box, then the one with short hair goes in the boy box!!
maybe I'm just a boring he/him white guy but inventing about 7 trillion terms to define "man" and "woman" so you can reinforce gender essentialism isn't very "love is love" of you. maybe i just don't have a sexuality but picking and choosing what sexualities are normal and which ones are "weird and predatory" sounds like we're all a bunch of republicans on fox news. if you attend your local pride parade and look REAAALLLYYY closely, you'll notice you can't actually tell if someone's gay or not from their appearance, and there's no way to know if they're "invading queer spaces". maybe it's just me, but when i attended my local gaybar last night for the drag show, they didn't ask for my gay-card with a peer reviewed diagnosis of faggot stamped on it. they just let me in the building. i live a life of bliss and luxury in not caring about any queer discourse ever, and just going "WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY :-)" while booting up the latest cod game. and it seems much more fun than whatever the fuck you people are on about
muting my notifs for this post but i need to acknowledge this first. My favorite tags fr 🙏
had a dream that there was this new tiktok trend called "scrubbing" where people would take images of fictional characters and put them in images of bathtubs and drag around transparent pngs of soap and brushes with their tiktok art tablets and like liquify tool their hair down to mimic giving them a shower. and people would get into flamewars in the comments of every single video over the types of soap they picked and if the images had decently removed backgrounds and if they got soap in their eyes. and it got onto the news because it turned out everyone doing the trend was doing it compulsively like they physically couldn't stop and each video was a solid few minutes long because they were just collectively obsessively recording themselves fake-showering these fictional characters and arguing about it online
for the record I have never used tiktok and like explicitly in the dream I learned about it secondhand from a discord server so there's that also which is funny I think

Being neck deep in the Old Republic era of Star Wars really puts things into odd perspective when the occasional OG meta crosses my dash. Here I am thinking about the nature of the Jedi Order and its tendency to hegemony and severely mistrusting anything and everything that they can't fit into their neat little world view, alongside the desperate and sometimes unethical strides the Order made during the twenty eight year long galactic war against the Sith Empire, where both factions where hundreds of thousands if not millions of force users strong, where sometimes the sheer need of bodies leads to a disconnect between teachings and actual practice... Not to mention the era is haunted by the actions of the events three hundred years prior of the actions of Darth Revan and the Jedi Exile, by the wars that shaped them, and thus gave rise to this unstable and constantly breaking galactic conflict!
And then I read a very thoughtful meta about how the Jedi are a small and marginalized religious group that are both lauded and exploited by the very Senate that they serve. And like. It's not wrong. The Prequels are very much about that!! But god it just reads so at odds to me because that's not the situation I'm familiar with and know.
It's just that the Clone Wars as a concept are just so small in comparison to the scale of this civilization on civilization war of the Old Republic. Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if the developers of SWTOR had that very concept in mind when they were creating the game: Take the Clone Wars and just make it bigger. Instead of a few million clone troopers versus droids you now have tens of millions of soldiers and conscripts on both sides, instead of a couple thousand Jedi versus a dozen of dark-siders and Sith, you now have hundreds of thousands of Jedi and Sith. Not only that, but the Republic itself is smaller, only really encompassing the Core Worlds and a good chunk of the mid rim, plagued by the Sith Empire seizing worlds from them and other worlds seceding in protest. It isn't just the Separatist Conflict, it's that on top of the war against an entirely separate sovereign entity that desires all of the Republics resources and planets.
It's also like. The Sith. No longer is it just Palpatine with his myriad groomed and broken boys and the occasional Fallen Jedi or dark sider, it's now a full blown concept and institution. Power schemes and backstabbing but also a full multilayered society of Sith, military, civilian, slaves all working in concert to be the aggressors of a very big and very costly galactic war. Sure they're kinda uh. Evil. Sometimes. Especially with Emperor Vitiate's stated goal of devouring planets but like. You get to see how sympathetic and morally nuanced people just living in this society can be, from the top all the way down to the bottom. It's not just spooky evil boogeymen cackling away in the dark, it's just mostly that.
It's a fascinating era to dig into and play around in, because you have things like Alderaan's civil war and succession crisis, the discovery of the Voss as a society of Force users who refuse to fall into a binary of dark/light and the Republic and Empire's desperate bids for favor, the politics of the Hutt Cartel and how they brush up against these giant nations, how places like even the outer rim are affected by this galaxy spanning conflict.
Don't get me wrong, I like the original movies and the prequels/rebels era of the timeline! It's just so small compared to what I'm dealing with, with the room for many stories about so many different conflicts just in the Jedi Order alone. The Old Republic era just hits different, and has a lot of flexibility in most every concept it brings forth for every institution to be both a hero and a villain depending on where you look. (Star Cabal you're on thin fucking ice)

my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government
this is getting really popular so i’d like to add the important caveat that your criticism of a work is no more unassailable than the work itself. just as one is entitled to be critical of something someone else is entitled to disagree with that criticism. i add this because some of you pretend to give a fuck about thoughtful analysis and then when someone points out flaws in your argument you declare that all criticisms are valid. this is untrue. the status of a hater is no more sacred than that of a liker. get off your high horse and engage in the thoughtful discussion you pretend to believe in or perish by my blade
