Since the movie JAWS was released, the shark population has gone down by as much as 70% since the 1970’s. Especially in California, the movie led to vendetta killings and great white shark tournaments. Many fishermen will catch and show off sharks without acknowledging potential cruelty towards the animal.

The reason this is so important is because, without sharks, many coral reefs and large scale ecosystems will continue to die. The more those populations go down, the more that smaller predators and herbivores will begin to overpopulate these ecosystems and food supplies in them will dwindle. They also keep oceans healthy and strong by targeting fish with weaker traits or illness, allowing healthier offspring in other species.

While not the sole cause, much of the ocean’s deterioration is likely a result of this famous movies interpretation of sharks. Whether it was the movies intention to make people see sharks this way or not
