This is one of the main reasons why, faults aside, I love the 1990 miniseries. To my knowledge, it’s the only Phantom version where Erik and Christine sing a duet and the public actually gets to see the full extent of Erik’s talent. In that moment, his appearance doesn’t matter because the audience is so enraptured with his voice–and to Erik, the audience doesn’t matter because Christine really is singing only for him. The best part is that he gets a standing ovation. Forget the fact that some random masked dude totally just interrupted the opera–he has the most magnificent voice anyone has ever heard, and he gets a standing ovation. This scene is such a brilliant bit of justice for Erik. Aaaand then he ruins it because he’s Erik and he’s nuts, but still. It’s the thought that counts.
