A Note from IWTV S2 Writer A. Zell Williams
Read here:
How a show's fans lifted my spirits years after working on the series.
and then there were three
the photography arc rlly is the rosetta stone for me to louis' whole character. but whatever.
ppl love to be like ‘louis is a business major in a world full of theatre kids’ and its like well. most vampires in this world end up making art (i think bc anne rice likely had a sort of universalizing view that any being that lives long enough will eventually become an artist) and louis has clearly always been passionate about the arts!! He’s been deeply moved by it since he was a human (see: Iolanthe incident) He has opinions about it (he’s literally a prolific art collector, he gets degraded in a racialized way by Santiago for being ‘pretentious’ about art, he reads or sleeps through TdV’s work not bc he hates all theatre but bc he thinks their work is tawdry and bizarre.)
it makes sense that louis tries his hand at being an artist, and that attempt a symbol of profound hope! but he also happened to pick the artform most prohibitive to him as a vampire (photography requires light and patience, whereas he’s always outrunning the sun.) and he takes photos of humans that he cannot get emotionally close to (the photo he takes of armand is notably the only one an art dealer gets a lil frisson off of.) he completely stacks the deck against himself, putting himself in a position to reaffirm his prior belief that vampirism is a curse and a limitation.
when he realizes his art isn’t great he quits. but if he had waited for cameras to improve, or taken photos of fellow vampires, (and fwiw i think there was a post floating around about how if louis just ate more, things might be easier lolol) or just been content to suck at it for a while, there’s no reason why he couldn’t have continued (lord knows other vampires are out there being bad and weird at whatever they’re making, in part bc they’re v much out of step with the culture they’re attempting to contribute to. and louis actually seems a great deal more clued in to the zeitgeist based on what he says to claudia about the parisian modern art scene, and even up to 2022 where he knows what essencefest is like my girl still knows whats what more or less.)
i think louis stops not only bc its painful and frustrating to not be able to practice this artform the way he wants to, but bc he cannot deal with the idea that he isn’t Creating Value or contributing, he would just be enjoying himself.
And and and the most chilling thing to me has always been the stein-photo-replacement moment and subsequent crashout. (obv that story beat is abt armand being manipulative and undermining louis’ account of events, but) the way louis is so upset and so vehement abt insisting that he was merely adequate as a photographer, how important it is for louis that the readers know that is like Thee character detail of the whole season for me. louis is so ruled by self loathing that it feels central to his personal integrity and the integrity of the story he’s telling that he not say anything too nice about himself or his creative output. and its so fucking racialized bc truly louis still lives in fear of being called arrogant and haughty and uppity and pretentious by white people who do not want him to like himself !! like lets all kill ourselves fr
THE best vampire
New Instagram profile pic for the first time in YEARS. Everybody move!!!
i haven't actually watched the new season yet, but i'm listening to the songs when they come out & i just listened to big bad wolf... why is lestat crashing out SO hard over the interview/book?? like. unless daniel rlyyyyy changed the interview/what louis told him, i don't rlly get why he cares sm. like obviously it would suck to have an ex reveal all your private life details to the public & obviously lestat is a very dramatic & emotional person. but i mean. louis was pretty positive in his depiction of lestat during the interview. i mean at least wayyy more than the og book & the 70s interview. the worst thing louis says about him are true (other than what he said to claudia on the train, and ig daniel maybe didn't include that they had her diaries so it wasn't louis just saying/guessing that lestat said that?). but like. in the song the inaccuracies he seems plagued by are either so mundane or they paint him in a better light. i mean the initials on the breast pocket? (which btw louis never actually claimed was true, it was just louis having imagined that, if daniel wrote it as something def true then that's just on daniel being a shitty writer). like. that made me like you more, dude. it was like. lowk one of the most romantic things (we thought) you did. louis rlyy didn't make him seem like the monster, he seemed to have read the book & seen himself as. like. yeah he was abusive & that's mentioned but. that's true. lestat doesn't seem angry about that bcs its true, can't rlly refute that. like. idk i feel like what they seem to be going for (at least from just listening to the song), it'd have worked better if it was more a reaction to how book!louis describes lestat or how 70s!louis describes lestat. in the dubai interview, he (as daniel even remarks) describes him as the love of his life. just a messy, abusive love of his life. but he describes him with love!!!!
so like. either daniel changed A LOT. or lestat's a fucking idiot (or the writers this season are...)
OH MY GOD
the vampire lestat looks really weird
if louis & count orlok met:
loumand as i've seen that face before (libertango) by grace jones
why is there no s2 louis scenepack?? there's scenepacks for his ships/duos, scenepacks for other individual characters, a scenepack for s1 him. but none of s2 louis??
reading this queen magazine & this description of roger taylor & freddie mercury feels very louis & lestat
"taylor is the pretty one with class, while mercury is the evil-looking type with vibes. he describes himself as being 'sluttish' onstage and it's true- just the way he slinks around the place"
Jacob Anderson on Armand
Source: Polish youtube channel Serialowa
Jacob Anderson brings up some great points about the character of Armand, and why he is the way he is, given his traumatic past. And he talks about why it's reductive to simplify characters as just good or evil.
Transcript:
I do want to say something about Armand quickly, because I give Armand so much shit when I talk about the show all the time. And he is probably the character that I'm like, Jacob, I watch, and I'm like, that guy gets on my nerves. Like he just seems to kind of get things wrong at every stage. But I think something that this season goes into in a really powerful way, and I think kind of reframes a lot of what you see of him before is that like, he's almost… he's what happens if you go through some of the worst like personal atrocities from a very young age. Like, so much cruelty is inflicted on you, and then you're just alone. And he tries to… I feel like Armand is continually trying to find community. And in one way it like it manifests in like religious fundamentalism and like you know, this really dark sort of cult kind of thing, that he tries to like control people. And then he just sort of tries to find… like Louis becomes like a bit of a weird sort of religious figure to him at some point. And then he's trying to recreate this… this horrific dynamic that was inflicted on him from a very young age. And so I think there is a way that you can look at Armand and be like that guy's evil, his behaviour's not cool on any level. But I think something that our show does really well is that all of these… there is a version of every single one of these characters, including Claudia, including Madeleine even. They would be the villain in a lesser story. But we spend the time on getting to know all of these characters and understanding why they make the decisions they make. And I think it's quite easy to sort of pin the 'villain pin' on Armand. And I am guilty of doing it myself. But actually like between Assad and Rolin and Hannah, I think he becomes, in this season, an even more fully formed, fully understandable character.
i'm rereading iwtv rn and lestat rllyyy sounds like that "sign the divorce papers/i don't have a pen" audio but with sleeping with louis.
louis' like "i'll sleep in the wardrobe" and lestat's like "noo you have to sleep in a coffin. and i only have one". then the next night, louis' like "you sleep in my bedroom, i'll sleep in a different room" and lestat's like "noo that's so dangerous you'll dieee if we don't sleep together" "idc." "well you musttt, we have to share plssss"
under every louclaudia edit people bring up how much louis wronged her which yeah but the thing is under lesclaudia edits i don’t really see that happen a lot i just see a bunch of people being like lesdaughter 😭😭💔 like oh figures
it's hard making friends/close moots in this fandom bcs everyone will be like who's top & bottom & i'll say everyone is both. then they'll be like "oh so like subtops & dombottoms?" and i have to say no they switch for all. "but lestat is always dom" no i don't see that personally "but armand is always subbottom" no i see that as only his dynamic with louis "they can't all switch" yeah they can..
