After season 2 aired and it was mentioned how Alastor would “weirdly get along with” the other Vees (Velvette and Valentino), there seems to be some confusion about how Alastor and Valentino would get along when Alastor objects to rape, and Valentino is a rapist.

Here’s my answer: Alastor does not actually object to sexual assault as such.

First of all, you can get along with someone you hate in a surface-level way, so there is that, but in the prequel comic where Alastor kills the rapist, I don’t think what he was actually objecting to was attempted rape.

He says, “I do really hate those who can’t show a little respect to those of fairer means,” not “I do really hate people who force themselves on others.” He’s objecting to violence against women, not the crime in and of itself. He probably sees male-on-male rape as just another unfortunate bit of violence men inflict on each other.

Put it this way: would he intervene if a man punched another man in the face? Of course not. Would he intervene if a woman was being punched in the face by a man? Probably. Then what happens there makes sense.

Of course, Valentino certainly has raped women (although probably not in front of Alastor) and though I don’t think Alastor is naïve about that reality, it wouldn’t stop him from pretending to get along with Val the way you’d get along with a fascist boss at work by talking about how you both listen to The Strokes. That’s not even touching the fact that Angel hasn’t told anyone; I don’t even think Charlie knows the abuse has gone beyond black eyes.

I think people have forgotten one crucial tenet of feminist theory known as “benevolent sexism.” That is what Alastor is: a benevolent sexist. He calls women “dear,” including ones he barely knows like Velvette. He doesn’t fight women except in necessary self-defense—when people noticed he took a long time to hit Velvette back in their battle, from a meta aspect it was probably because she needed time for her quip, but character-wise I tend to assume it was because at that point she’d only cut his face and he was hoping he wouldn’t actually have to hurt her. Mimzy says, “But you love taking care of me!” and comes running to help for him against the men who are after her, playing helpless in order to manipulate him, which he seems sort of aware she is doing but is ultimately unbothered by.

This may look to people like politeness and manners, but Alastor acting this way is not “feminism,” but rather his belief that women are delicate so they need both politeness and protection. He is not feminist, he is sexist. And while him saving the unnamed female sinner from rape is an objectively wonderful thing to do, the reason he does it is he considers women as a whole too weak to protect themselves, so he has to do it.

And I absolutely love the concept of pulling out a step stool to yell at/hate fuck my comfort character this show has really brought out the monster fucker in us all and it’s beautiful

I see a lot of people interpreting this particular scene:

quite literally. Like Alastor is Vox’s victim who has just courageously spoken out.

In reality, the show has directly set Alastor and Vox up to be foils. They are the same and they are different. They’re two sides of the same coin.

This is simply more of Alastor being a filthy hypocrite.

For one, at no point did Alastor tell Vox he didn’t like to be touched. He does pull away from the shoulder touch in “Don’t You Forget (Reprise)” and the odd thing is that Vox lets him. He doesn’t touch his shoulders again. Vox also looks genuinely baffled when Alastor says he’s a creep and he hates it, repeating the motion on Charlie to be sure he understands what Alastor is objecting to right.

Look at how Alastor touches Charlie in season 1 episode 7—something @robertarryn ‘s post also points out.

This after snaking his fingers up her arms, too, which is even creepier.

And let’s not forget this from the pilot:

Touching a lesbian this way and telling her to smile.

He either slapped Vaggie’s ass or her lower back here.

And let’s not forget all the unwanted touches he gives Husk in season 1, episode 5.

So, he’s not taking any kind of stance here. The show has given us these scenarios deliberately—to demonstrate that Alastor is just as much of a hypocrite as he is when he mocks Vox for needing others to be strong. He’s not Vox’s victim. He’s not even better than Vox in any way. They were both serial killers in life, and Alastor was perfectly willing to let the hotel crew go hang if Rosie didn’t fix his staff. The fandom has a tendency to woobify Alastor, but I don’t think we should forget who he really is.

(As far as the ship being “dead”…. I think maybe some of you haven’t been involved in shipping that long. We shipped people from different media who never interacted. Keep shipping radiostatic if you want. I think it’s pretty alive myself. Even if you don’t, I think we can all agree Alastor’s not being sincere here.)
