everything i love about bastogne!

i love that we have an entire episode dedicated to how great eugene roe is.

the fact that it’s quiet enough at the beginning that we can hear the sound of walking over the snow.

winters trying to shave in that frozen hell + arresting that german soldier with shaving cream still on his face.

the episode is so devoid of colour that winter’s doesnt look ginger :( though we can always see the color of blood, of course.

sleepy and probably hungover nixon appears out of nowhere. classic.

gene almost spraining his ankle.

seriously lost count over how many times eugene says “scissus” in the first twenty minutes of this get the guy some goDDAMNED SCISSORS.

the absolute fatigue in lipton’s face when he has to show lieutenant dike where his foxhole is + also, how the fuck does dike not know where his foxhole is that’s literally his nickname.

“the hell with the leg, i'm pissing needles” poor bill spends the whole episode with a peeing problem.

gordon’s “scissors? well, let's see, i'll have to check the sewing room. might be upstairs in the study. that skinny old drawer in the middle of the desk”.

gene i know it’s your job but how can you just be running around during a shelling.

roe and renee bonding in french (+ one of the few scenes where roe genuinely smiles). it’s so sweet but also so sad how they have to part ways so quickly. and the chocolate?????

george’s “that asshole couldn’t find a snowball in a blizzard” about peacock…

first instances of how the war is affecting gene (numbness and paralisis) when we see him sitting on that tree. always waiting for something…

the idea of babe, who was introduced as a replacement like two episodes ago (a few months in real time), having to mentor and lose an ever greener replacement like all the other veterans that had mentored him… a never ending cicle.

winters sitting with the guys when they are all down because of julian’s death.

that look babe sends to roe… #whatthatmean. does he resent him for not being able to save him? does he understand by he’s always so distant with them? a little bit of both?

also, gene thinks about giving him the chocolate immediately! he basically spends the rest of the day looking for babe to give it to him.

so he can’t find babe ‘cause he isn’t in his hole? we know he’s with spine, so does that mean babe went there looking for him too? much to think about.

the soft “got ya” when he finally finds him + “i promised him, if he got hit, i'd get his stuff and bring it to his ma, you know? now the fucking krauts'll strip him” / “it’s okay” / “it’s not! it’s not okay”

gene smiling softly when talking about traiteurs and his grandmother + spina’s “i’ve had enough of playing doctor”.... spina asks him about it but he doesn’t answer (it’s amazing how little he lets us see inside his mind!).

the smiles when the supplies arrive.

how much of a nerd am i when i recognize that they also filmed a scene from les mis in that chappel?

roe and renee talking after they couldn’t save that guy (the chocolate, the hands, “i never want to treat another wounded man again. i'd rather work in a butcher's shop”, “no, it’s not a gift. god would never give such a painful thing”).

buck talking about legionaries and visigoths to gonorrea and babe (“so, what's college like, buck? you can study with all the cheerleaders running fingers through your hair?” / “hell, babe, i can't even remember”).

babe being amused that gene called him “edward” (+ the idea that doc refuses to use nicknames as a way of distancing himself from the men).

that rushed breath when smokey gets hit? + the fact that it takes a while for gene to react and help smokey (spina almost has to shake him out of it).

“he's paralyzed. can't feel a thing”... something about only being able to understand a bit of what gene’s feeling through his diagnosis of a patient (his numbness = smokey’s “can’t feel a thing)...

renée appearing in the light like an angel. understanding gene without him having to say a word.

“to the german commander: nuts!”, which everyone but gene finds funny.

the m gene marks in welsh’ forehead (to indicate he’s had morphine) resembles the gesture of that priest from a previous scene! simbolism. whatever.

gene leaning over harry’s body to protect him from the shelling (an apparent improvisation from the actor!).

finding renée’s head piece in the ruins.

the final scene (the best scene in the whole episode? yes): “you called me ‘babe’!”, babe imitating roe’s lousiana accent, “heffron, watch the goddamn line”, the sun is finally out, the camera pans towards the blood covered snow ahead… masterpiece !

are they… you know… foxhole buddies?

no because what i love about this episode is thats so structurally sound: gene’s arch towards numbness interrupted by renée (a sort of angel-like figure), who offers him a tentative contact with human connection in the middle of the war (which gene has been depriving himself of because he doesn’t want to get too attached to his potential patiens) that ends up culminating with babe (gene literaly uses renée’s hanky to heal babe! and it’s the use of his nickname that gets babe out of his own small numbness!). perhaps it was precisely renée’s death that made gene take a step towards babe.

BUT WHO CARES. I DON'T. I’M NOT CRYING.

anyway gene and babe and renée as a golden trio is one for the ages.
