Starting 2020 with a promise to myself that this will be the year I push on with a cherished longterm project on Hong Kong’s ancient fung shui woods and their caretaker guardians. Cultivated hundreds of years ago from existing forests according to local geomancy, the woods served to provide their adjacent villagers not just with alleged good fortune but also with food, firewood and protection from storms, bushfire and floods. In turn, their guardians maintained strict rules protecting the woods from excessive exploitation and in the process preserved some of the most ecologically diverse ecosystems in the world including rare native species. Given the current state of the global environment there is much we could learn from the fung shui woods dotted over Hong Kong’s countryside. But increasingly even these are under threat, from voracious development, benign neglect and, yes, climate change. More than ever I’m feeling the urgency to document the myth and magic of these places and their dwindling band of rural gardeners before they too are gone. Chuffed to have made even a small contribution to raising funds in support of tertiary education for young refugees in Hong Kong, with the auction of my woodland study Over the Milky Way last night with @christian_action Centre for Refugees. Too many to mention here but together supporters, hosts and sponsors raised a total of nearly HKD68,000 towards supporting refugees’ education beyond the age of 18 when their limited government school assistance ends. There are currently over 13,000 asylum seekers and refugees in Hong Kong, many of whom can be stranded here for years waiting for their cases to be resolved. Hong Kong has a long history of hosting refugees. Indeed, many Hong Kongers were once refugees themselves, fleeing the Chinese Civil War in the 1950s. If there’s just one take away from history and our current global political turmoil, it’s that we are all potential refugees.
