Starting 2020 with a promise to myself that this will be the year I push on with a cherished longterm project on Hong Kong’s ancient fung shui woods and their caretaker guardians. Cultivated hundreds of years ago from existing forests according to local geomancy, the woods served to provide their adjacent villagers not just with alleged good fortune but also with food, firewood and protection from storms, bushfire and floods. In turn, their guardians maintained strict rules protecting the woods from excessive exploitation and in the process preserved some of the most ecologically diverse ecosystems in the world including rare native species. Given the current state of the global environment there is much we could learn from the fung shui woods dotted over Hong Kong’s countryside. But increasingly even these are under threat, from voracious development, benign neglect and, yes, climate change. More than ever I’m feeling the urgency to document the myth and magic of these places and their dwindling band of rural gardeners before they too are gone. Seen here are prelim outtakes from a recent study of Nam Fung Road wood, the only remaining fung shui forest on Hong Kong Island itself.
