Holy Sh!t!!
Itâs happening.
Dilbert gets dropped from 77 newspapers!
Two big surprises dropped today when cartoonist Scott Adamâs announced on Twitter that his comic strip âDilbertâ was dropped from 77 newspapers.
The first big surprise was that newspapers are still around and the second was that âDilbertâ was still in publication.
Many, many, many people will tell you that âDilbertâ is one of the worst comic strips to ever exist. The strip follows the title character who works in an office and has a talking dog. Most of the jokes fall flat or are completely non-existent. Just because a boss gave you a memo doesnât mean itâs a good joke.
Hereâs an example:
If you arenât rolling from laughter, I understand.
Some have screamed that this is come cancel culture madness, but it actually has to do with plain old dollars and cents. Take a look at the post from the company that owns âDilbertâ.
Andrews McMeel Syndication is a big company owned by Universal Studios and they are buying up and cutting back several comics and games to keep the company alive, including Lee Enterprises which works with âDilbertâ.
Since the rise of digital news and information, newspapers have suffered greatly and some have had to shut down completely. Comics and their creators took a big hit when this change happened and now creators have to go digital, where comics are seen for free, and push more merchandise to stay afloat. Itâs really been tough to witness, but that is how many creators make money online. Itâs known as the âTV Modelâ of doing business, you can see the show for free, but the lunchbox is gonna cost ya $20.
But the loss of âDilbertâ in some newspapers isnât really a loss at all. âDilbertâ has a ton of merch, mostly aimed at folks who work in offices. Plush toys, calendars, bobble heads, mugs; just about everything that can be made with âDilbertâsâ face on it.
So whether youâre cheering this loss or mourning it, one thing is for certain, âDilbertâ is still here.
