Two eridians and their wet dog
honestly “the lion doesn’t concern himself with” is a pretty good anti-ocd phrase
the lion doesn’t concern himself with managing other people’s feelings
the lion doesn’t concern himself with what ifs
the lion doesn’t concern himself with germs
the lion doesn’t concern himself with reliving that one excruciatingly painful moment for the one thousandth time and imagining a better response
Judith Disrupting Holofernes - Gentileschi x Corporate Illustration - killpony, 2021 (originally posted to reddit)
"the canva child" (2023)
thank you so much for sharing your work!! i hope it's ok for me to share below the caption you put on it, because i found it really poignant, and i think it's worth seeing for other people too:
"i read recently that over the span of 40 years, edvard munch painted six copies and many many studies of his piece "the sick child", a painting that depicted his sister dying from tuberculosis at 15. learning about this struck me in a funny way. since graduating (and honestly just over the years) my relationship with my own art has become toxic - nothing portfolio-worthy, nothing technically impressive, nothing good enough for me or anyone else. too emo. almost all the work i made in college were goofy projects about my dead brother and suddenly realised i was in the job search world with nothing clean enough to show. employers dont want to see that. thats like realising a wild animal in their office. so i just stopped. no point. started over. ive spent a lot of time since looking into design and teaching myself ad*be illustrator. something about the coldness of some vector art (specifically this facebooky graphic style commonly referred to as "corporate memphis") appealed to me. no one has a real skin color, sometimes not even a face, just shapes and blobs. impersonal and easy to produce. oh baby. only recently did it occur to me that i "could do something fun" with that "for myself". munch's "the sick child" represents a lot to me- love, grief, survivor's guilt. the fact that he did this painting over and over was a comfort - obvs i'm no legendary painter but it was a reminder to me that it doesn't automatically make you a lousy artist to use art as an exorcist for trauma. that's actually the point🤨 girl. (where was i going with this) sooo this is my "corporate memphis clip art" take on munch's "the sick child".🤷🏻♀️ the strongest emotion i know in a work-friendly wrapper. big sorry for the essay but i feel like this is the first piece of mine ive liked (even if it's the artistic equivalent a muzak rendition of beethoven). it's stupid and was fun to do. yeehaw. thanks 💋 maybe ill do the scream next idk."
full disclosure: there are aspects of corporate memphis that i (oceanlandworld) actually love in an artistic sense. i love the abstraction of human form, the bright flat colors, and the lineless cutout style*! and i love seeing people do creative and interesting things with this style that was developed for bland and inoffensive uses
what you wrote about packaging "the strongest emotion [you] know in a work-friendly wrapper" really captures what is striking to me about killpony's take on gentileschi's painting. gentileschi's judiths have been meaningful to me for a long time as an expression of rage against sexual predators (more info here, cw mentions of rape) and that juxtaposition of the intensity of painful feeling in an art style designed to be soft and safe is so interesting and captivating to me.
thank you again for sharing your work!!!!
*obv corporate memphis didnt Invent those things and draws upon the history of much more interesting art but i still have a perpetual sense of attraction-repulsion to corp memph for this reason haha
i hear a good lyric and start mentally holding up blorbos like im in the home depot paint aisle comparing swatches
I imagine rocky puts grace's amnesia problems down as a "probably normal for humans, they forget stuff all the time" thing for a while and it doesn't set in until maybe a year into the erid trip that, no, losing straight up All of your memories for several months is just about as concerning and unusual for a human as it would be for an eridian. and his immediate reaction is twofold: 1. "you. you were that brain-unhealthy for the entire time we were working together and you just. barely ever mentioned it? Why. Question." 2. [sudden recollection of every time he got short of temper and said something bitchy like "lazy human not know how own ship function" or "how grace forget location of basic controls question"] [curls up on the floor in embarrassment] "should have said something so I not spend two months making fun of brain injuryyy"
Oh easy mistake. Yearning actually rises from the floor and longing hangs from the ceiling
at some point in your life you will be boiling fruit, water, sugar, and lemon juice in a pot to make a syrup or jam. the instructions will tell you to simmer for a certain amt of time. your timer will go off and you will look at the pot and go, "hm, this doesn't look thick enough. maybe i'll let it go for another 10 minutes." this is the devil speaking. it's only so liquid right now because it is at boiling point. it will thicken when it cools down. learn from the follies of my youth and do not let this happen to you
at some point in your life you will be making a sauce or a stew in which you need to add cornstarch to thicken it. and you will prepare a slurry of starch in cold water and think "this looks like way too little starch to thicken this amount of liquid." this is the devil speaking. cornstarch instantly polymerizes at 95°C and if you add too much it will turn into an impossibly thick goop.
at some point in your life you will be making some sort of cream based dessert that requires gelatin to thicken it. and you will soak some gelatin sheets in water and think "this is too few gelatin sheets for this amount of cream." this is the devil speaking. it will thicken in the fridge and if you add too much you will end up with milk jelly
at some point in your life you will be baking cookies. you will take the sheet out after twelve minutes as the recipe instructs and the cookies will still be glistening and soft. "these don't seem cooked enough," you will think to yourself, "i should place them back into the oven until their edges are nice and golden." this is the devil talking. this is how you get dry, overdone cookies. the cookies will continue to bake on the warm sheet for several more minutes and then harden up after sitting on a rack for a while. trust the process. trust the process.
at some point in your life you will be adding a small pasta to a soup and you will think "that is not enough small pasta." this is the devil talking. the pasta will absorb the stock and expand. this is how you end up with a soup that is a solid mass of soggy ditalini.
At some point in your life you will be adding garlic to a dish and you will think "that is not enough garlic." These are angels speaking. They are correct. Add more garlic.
Mutuals if you’re the pope you have to tell me or it’s entrapment
today I learned that in 2008, the city council of florence overturned dante’s sentence of execution if he returned from exile. yes, dante’s inferno dante, who died in 1321.
but the funniest part of this is not that they were debating the exile of a man who has been dead for over 500 years.
the funniest part is that the vote was 19-5. five people voted to uphold dante’s exile.
The objectively funniest part of this is actually that the city that holds his remains, Ravenna, refused to give his remains back. This was a ploy from florence to have his remains moved back for the tourist money and its been ongoing for a long time. Florence had a fake tomb built in the city to trick people into visiting, and have tried to force the return of the remains.
His actual caretakers have been very steadfast in keeping them hidden, moved, or generally out of reach to respect his choice in life to never, ever, ever return to florence, even when he was first offered the chance to return. This is at this point an almost millenium long feud that florence is really, really mad about losing
so basically the five people who wanted to uphold his exile were in the right
The Civil War Dads would like to remind us that it’s Pickett’s Charge Day, when a nation of the people, for the people, by the people did not perish from the earth because its defenders were heroic and its enemies were arrogant and kind of dumb. May it always be so.
the horror of being "god's favourite princess". literally one of my favourite horror themes. the god loves you and it's so scary.
it will always choose you. you cannot die. you'll always come back because it loves you so much. you are its right and left hand, its eternal weapon. it will drown you in its light. light as horror. darkness as horror. what if it thinks you are its best friend.
you are god's favourite princess and it's terrifying.
My middle school gave you detention if you didn’t turn in your homework on time did I ever tell y’all about that
Did your school* give you detention if you didn't do your homework?
Yes, breaktime or lunchtime detention
Yes, after-school detention
No
Some of my schools did but others didn't
*High school and/or middle school, not primary/elementary school.
man, these healthcare prices are getting ridiculous
things in fic I'm used to people kind of faking their way through writing about:
the city of los angeles
the city of new york
sex
how drinking alcohol works
how getting high works
how a child of any age speaks
how nuclear physics work
how [my job] works
how debilitating being shot in the shoulder is
how hypothermia works
things I have never before seen someone fake their way through writing about, until today:
what french toast is
read through the notes on this one trust me
Here's some of the notes, starting with the things multiple people brought up:
SHRIMP COCKTAIL:
banahbanah: #flashback to that one fic where Peter Parker frets about drinking shrimp cocktail because of the alcohol
generaldeliciousness: adding: what a prawn/shrimp cocktail is
#why is your character turning it down because they're under 21 #do you think prawn cocktail is a cocktail #this lives in my brain rent-free constantly #the rest of the fic was so normal #and good enough that i'll still re-read it #but bro
And then many, MANY, people wondering if this was actually authour mistake, since Peter really would do this!
POMEGRANATES:
zhajhassa: #haha where's that post that was like someone describing someone eating a pomegranate but they ate it like an apple
thornhands: #once someone wrote persephone biting into a whole Pomegranate #had to stop and stare at a wall for a minute
sungsingsanguine: I once saw someone very confidently write about a character eating slices of pomegranate.
FRUIT TREES:
zagreuses-toast: #given a very endearing glimpse into a writers blindspots by seeing them describe someone sitting under a ''pineapple tree''
salatrash: I remember something about picking watermelons... OF A FUCKING TREE
baander: #cranberry trees
DOUGH/BATTER:
maycelium: #I'm a chef so I'm really used to people not accurately describing how to cook food #But I was surprisingly flabbergasted when someone was writing making a cake and was kneading it. Which uh #Not necessary for cake. It was interesting for sure but just bizarre
livebloggingmydescentintomadness: #the one that drove me nuts was when a character set aside a batch of PASTA DOUGH 'to rise' #pasta doesn't have yeast!! #it does need to REST but it will never RISE #you do not want an airy crumb on your noodles
lovesodeepandwideandwell: #THE ONE WHERE THEY MADE COOKIES BY LADLING BATTER INTO A TRAY
Some other topics:
This wasn't fanfic, but a very prominent actual play show's very well known cast not knowing you can't leave a Baked Alaska sitting on a room temperature counter for hours before a dinner...
The thing is you can have a grassy lawn or even a golf course without it being an ecological disaster, you just have to a: be cool about having the occasional non-grass plant in the mix and b: be willing to live in a climate that supports grass without irrigation.
Golf courses in California are an abomination which is why the sport was in fact invented in Scotland.
I always thought that golf as a sport should be adapted to the local native landscape. I think this will encourage regional pride when local golfers completely trounce visitors at Swamp Golf, Desert Golf, Forest Golf, etc. Rich tourists will be pressured to travel extensively to experience all forms of golf, instead of staying in their backyard country club golf courses. Internet discourse will probably somehow get worse but I think this is a small price to pay.
