Games from older consoles are being made less and less available to the point so much of the industry's history could easily vanish without
Preserving classic videogames from consoles past.
I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.
Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!
Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.
I've been using Vimm's Lair for years, I have yet to see a single bad link or virus on the entire site. It's arguably the safest and most comprehensive archive of video games in existence. Preserved history
the phrase really should be "eat your cake and have it too" im with the unabomber on this one
insane goodwill pickup
Getting down on my knees and thanking the humans who invented dishwashers and washing machines.
InsNe that dishwashers are more efficient and easier than just washing them manually but they also use less water. It’s a win win situation
They ALSO sterilize dishes, due to operating at a far higher temperature than human hands could ever tolerate. It's a win every way.
Made this post about 15 minutes after the repair guy who fixed the pump on my dishwasher packed up his tools and left, as the dishwasher was whirring along doing my dishes from that morning.
He said the exact same thing, which I did not know before that, so spreading this knowledge.
Why is there a diarrhea parasite outbreak in America?
Because Donald Trump and his Republican allies cut funding to disease prevention and control.
Why is measles back in America?
Because Donald Trump and his Republican allies, including RFK Jr, cut vaccine and measles prevention funding and programs.
Why is the New World Screwworm infecting cattle in Texas, when it had previously been eliminated from the area?
Because Donald Trump and his Republican allies, including Elon Musk, cut USAID funding, which in part worked to monitor and prevent screwworm outbreaks.
Why was there a flu outbreak in our armed forces?
Because Donald Trump and his Republican allies, including Pete Hegseth, cut vaccination requirements for our armed forces, putting all of them at risk alongside our military readiness.
What contributed to the Covid outbreak?
Donald Trump and his Republican allies cut funding to a pandemic prevention program in his first term because Barack Obama had created it.
“America first” sends its regards. Trump voters, please learn your lesson. And if you don’t, it’ll be taught to you again with yet another diarrhea outbreak.
Just say Republican voters love cruelty and can’t see 15 minutes past the end of their nose. Just say it. That’s all you really need to say about any of this.
Republican voters (all voters, really) have been subject to a decades-long propaganda campaign that has infiltrated every single piece of modern media we consume, from radio to Twitter to podcasts to news channels to TV shows.
This decades-long propaganda campaign has simultaneously degraded our education system, encouraged people to be more low trust and tribalist, and—importantly—has been better at telling voters how it will “help” them than liberals or leftists.
It’s true that simple lies are easier to process than complicated policy decisions. And emotional behavior is something shared by all voters, not just Republicans.
What I want to challenge every liberal, socialist, communist, or generally-left-of-center voter to consider: the world and government you want requires a high trust environment to function, while the world and government conservatives want thrives on low-trust environments. Is America currently a high social trust or low social trust environment? Does the way you think and talk about other people—even when they are wrong—encourage a high trust or low trust environment?
And, in the end, how do we repair social trust so that the world we want can come to fruition?
I won’t pretend to have all the answers here, and I’m not saying every voter needs to be babied until they die. But working to understand why people believe what they believe and taking them in good faith while seeking understanding can often go a long way.
By all means, attack policy. Attack politicians who endanger us. Attack individuals who make the social environment worse if it will discourage others from joining them. But writing off half of all American voters as simply cruel or simply dumb gives too little credit to them and too much credit to others.
