-when kaz first recruited her, it was interesting to say the least
-she wasn’t intimidated by him in the slightest, especially considering the fact that she could have easily killed him where he stood
-and despite his reputation, kaz couldn’t help but tell her he was impressed with her confidence
-nina’s response- “I could impress you with a lot of different things, kaz brekker. but it’d require you changing that ugly haircut first”
-from the very start their dry flirting and pet names was a mutual sarcastic sign of respect
-and though kaz would never admit it, he enjoys their banter as a refreshing change of pace from the rest of the dregs
-nina is the first person to introduce him to the amazing cuisine of waffles
-and before long her weekly updates to him are done over breakfast, though he pretends to be reluctant about it (just a formality to keep up his brooding image)
-besides jesper, she quickly becomes his most trusted member
-the three of them go out on jobs together all the time, learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses better than their own
-though she never mentions it, she notices the way his heartbeat picks up when someone touches him, silently slowing it to calm and retain his focus
-oddly enough he’s the first person she confides in about matthias
-unlike others, his critical lack of empathy or pity makes admitting it all significantly easier. and though he is anything but warm he manages a genuinely sincere “you’ll get through this, zenik”
-to kaz’s displease she never lets him forget it
- “i knew you had a soft spot for me, why dont you just confess your undying love already?”
-randomly one day kaz asks her opinion of inej, a blurted question that he cursed himself for immediately
- “what do you think of her, zenik?”
-nina smirks, “I think she’s great, kaz. but I don’t think my opinion is the one that matters, lover boy”
-as much as he tries, kaz can never truly get angry at her for her incessant teasing
-he pretends to ignore the silent thought that maybe its because she is more than just a subordinate gang member, nina zenik is his friend
