to all my researchers, students and people in general who love learning: if you don't know this already, i'm about to give you a game changer
connectedpapers
the basic rundown is: you use the search bar to enter a topic, scientific paper name or DOI. the website then offers you a list of papers on the topic, and you choose the one you're looking for/most relevant one. from here, it makes a tree diagram of related papers that are clustered based on topic relatability and colour-coded by time they were produced!
for example: here i search "human B12"
i go ahead and choose the first paper, meaning my graph will be based around it and start from the topics of "b12 levels" and "fraility syndrome"
here is the graph output! you can scroll through all the papers included on the left, and clicking on each one shows you it's position on the chart + will pull up details on the paper on the right hand column (title, authors, citations, abstract/summary and links where the paper can be found)
you get a few free graphs a month before you have to sign up, and i think the free version gives you up to 5 a month. there are paid versions but it really depends how often you need to use this kinda thing.
Random pieces of advice
The world is less scary and chaotic if you lie down on the floor
Noticing different kinds of light (stars, candles, sunshine or city lights) can bring back the feeling of wonder and hope
If you can’t shower, washing your hands and face will help you feel better and cleaner
If you can’t clean anything else, changing and/or washing your bedsheets can do wonders
Fresh air and being outside in general can help with depersonalisation
Spending time around animals can help you recognise what’s important and calm anxious thought cycles
Techniques for emotional regulation in children can really help adults too
Putting random asortment of food on a plate without creating an actual dish still counts as a meal
Drink something warm
Delete that app
Treat yourself as if you were a kid. Buy yourself a toy, play around, learn about cool new things
Fast paced life isn’t morally better and it’s not good for everyone
There is no good reason to keep yourself hungry
Singing to your full lung capacity can be a great way to let out built up emotion
Tension in the face can cause headaches. Try to massage your face regularly
Nothing is as important as your health
You are a whole person on your own, you don’t need someone else to be there to deserve love and attention. Your life can be full as long as you are present
You should cry things out whenever you feel like it
Slow walks are still movement and they do count
It’s never as bad as you imagine it
Try changing your toothpaste flavor if you hate brushing your teeth
Anything can be a stim toy - one of my favourites is a heavy dragon necklace that has a complicated surfice. It’s fun to touch and hold and it’s not even “actual” stim toy
Procrastinating and feeling bad about it is true waste of time. Learn to truly rest. It takes the same amount of time but it is useful
Sometimes you have to force yourself to do the things that make you feel better
Don’t trust the thoughts you have after not sleeping for a while
Friendships don’t have to be forever to mean something
it's okay if you're tired when you thought you'd be productive. none of us know how we're going to feel. even if you think positively, you may still be tired. sometimes, the only thing that can make you feel better is taking a break. please don't be so hard on yourself.

perfectionism is tempting because it leads you to believe that you’ll be happy if you just try a little bit harder. and a little bit harder. but ultimately, you just get unmotivated & tired by demanding more and more of yourself, so you don’t see the point in doing anything because it’ll never be “perfect.” but done, done is always better than perfect. “failing” is always better than being stuck in a cycle of procrastination and guilt!
How would you define Dark Academia
“Dark Academia, in general, is an aesthetic or subculture that revolves around romanticising university and academia.”
Dark academia is reading at midnight with candles being your only light source. It’s always wearing dark clothes, blazers, or tweed pants. It’s having an unhealthy addiction to coffee. It’s carrying around a leather satchel full of poetry books that were written years and years ago. It’s either being the quiet observant student at the back of the classroom or the know-it-all student that starts debates out of nowhere. It’s looking at old buildings that still have touches of history to them and yearning to always live in one. It’s being obsessed with greek mythology and writing essay’s on top of essays about theories you have. It’s always wanting to be at libraries because they give you a sense of comfort you’ve never felt before. It’s appreciating old architecture and art because you know you’ll never see anything like it again. It’s overanalyzing the works of famous poets. It’s listening to classical music when you’re studying or doing tedious tasks.
Dark Academia can be anything you want it to be, you control how dark academia looks like in your life. These are just a few things that I associate dark academia with :)
Still reeling from the realization that bullet journaling was essentially created to be a disability aid and got legit fuckin gentrified
Like I'm at work and don't have the time to properly organize my thoughts atm but like.
-bullet journalling was invented by a man with a learning disability (99% sure it was ADHD but his website now just says learning disability so I can't be 100%) as a system for organizing his life/way to work WITH his learning disability
-the general concept is bullet point the important things you need to do and use a simple system of symbols to mark whether it's done, rescheduled, cancelled, etc. with very little fanfare, keeping it all in one notebook so you know where to easily find the information at a glance
-people pick it up and it starts getting popular
-bullet journaling becomes an aesthetic movement largely populated by white neurotypicals
-bullet journaling has turned into creating an extremely pretty notebook that has some function, but largely depends on complicated decoration and aesthetic function that takes more time to set up than is tenable for the people it was created for
-new entries to bullet journaling feel pressure to shop at particular stores, use particular brands, purchase lots of stationery purely for its aesthetic value, and prioritize the artistry of the pages rather than the information being stored on them
-people who would massively benefit from the original system can only really find information on it from members of the aesthetic movement. There is now a barrier to entry for ppl with ADHD and other similar conditions, as bullet journaling now requires a focus and motivation to start that these same people often lack or struggle to maintain consistently
-bullet journaling is no longer a disability aid and has become an aesthetic movement largely for middle class white neurotypicals, pushing out the people who the system was created for to begin with
This is the original guide from the person who made bullet journalling. Super simple. Not at all high maintenance.
It was eye-opening to rewatch this after getting used to bullet journal meaning "work of highly decorative art you might journal in if it doesn't detract from the decoration" everywhere online.
some people need to study too often to remember their lessons and write exams. while some others can easily study their syllabus at the last moment and give their exams. some don't take notes, some do. some cannot read their material easily and need help. some can read and analyse a text on their own. there are still infinite number of possibilities when it comes to academia. it's how you choose what's the best for yourself. only you can find out what works for you. not the student next to you or the studyblr you follow.
One of the most important things you can do is learning how to improve. How to be a beginner at something and get better; how to make mistakes and learn from them. It could be a language, an instrument, a skill - anything. As children, we are praised for learning something, even if we make a lot of mistakes while doing it. This kind of compassion stops for adults; and most importantly, we stop having this compassion for ourselves.
A lot of us are focused on results, not on the process itself. School and university put a lot of emphasis on how good you are at something within a certain timeframe - not how you get there. This causes us to think of ourselves as naturally good at some things, but not at others. The truth is that we all got there by practice, not by nature.
We are afraid of making mistakes - even though they are perfectly natural. We feel embarassed when we learn new information - and we feel a strange sense of pride when we know something that others don't.
So here's to trying and failing - and eventually: improving.

Effects of physical activity on the brain 🤸🏽
Simply moving your body has immediate, long-lasting and protective benefits for brain 🧠 Better mood, better energy, better memory, better attention 🤔
A single workout you do will immediately increase levels of neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline 📈
Studies have shown that a single workout will improve your reaction times 🏃🏻♀️
Exercise produces brand new brain cells, new brain cells in the hippocampus, that actually increase its volume, as well as improve your long-term memory 🫢
Exercise will do is its protective effects on your brain. It is important because the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus are the two areas that are most susceptible to neurodegenerative diseases and normal cognitive decline in ageing. The more you're working out, the bigger and stronger your hippocampus and prefrontal cortex gets 💪🏼
The rule of thumb is you want to get three to four times a week exercise minimum 30 minutes an exercise session plus aerobic exercise 🧘🏽♀️
So don’t forget to care of yourself every day 🤍 Stay strong and healthy 🌱

Hey, I’m back with another masterpost. I decided to include some of my tips.
Use the forest app to keep you off your phone or just put your phone in a separate room
Try making a to-do list to plan out how much time you take to do each task so you keep track of time
Set rewards i.e. if I finish this task at 9am instead of 9.30am, I’ll watch my favourite tv show for 1 hour instead of 30 mins.
How to be disciplined
I guess this is pretty much like a habit. So try to maybe start small, i.e. study 10 mins each day and gradually increase the time limit if you feel comfortable doing so. The reason I chose 10 mins is because it seems like a very short period of time so it’s easier for you to get to work.
How to manage studies with social media
Always set a time period for your school work. For example, after 30 minutes of browsing through your social media, force yourself to do a piece of school work. That way, you will still get work done instead of browsing through your social media all day long.
If you realise on tumblr, I don’t come up with an original post every day and I tend to reblog my old post or queue others posts so don’t stress too much on coming up with a post. For instagram, you could try to take pictures all during the weekend, so you don’t have to stress taking them after school, etc. But it is important to always put studies first before your social media.
Consider switching off your phone or even deleting your social media apps or deactivating them during exams period if they are really getting in the way of your studies.
There is also the pomodoro method where you study for 25 minutes and rest for 5 minutes to allow your brain to re-energise itself.

Motivation
Try the 2 minute rule where you work for 2 minutes. 2 minutes is a short timing and can encourage you to start working. After the 2 minutes is up, you will probably want to continue working on that.
If you are low on energy, consume chocolate bars/study snacks/caffeine/tea/chicken essence to help keep yourself energised. Showering/washing your face with water helps to wake you up. A power nap can give you more energy to study after you get up.
