Following the embarrassment that was last night’s ceremony, it was more apparent than ever that Cain needed to sit down and practice the organ. It’d been far too long since he’d had an opportunity to do so, as more often than not his days were filled with adoption paperwork, sermons, and other responsibilities. It was a wonder how he ever found any time for himself at all!
Taking a deep breath, the priest relished in the silence that filled the halls of the church. It was an entirely different place during the morning than at the moment, and as the sun set the stained glass cast its incredible shapes upon the wall before him.
At last, when assured that there was no one around that needed his immediate assistance, he began to play..
With his back to the door, he didn’t so much as notice when a single soul peeked inside.

Divine Interaction || Cain & Mariel
Mariel giggled softly, a quiet, two note sound. “It’s quite a pleasure to meet you dearest Cain.” She looked at her ink-stained fingertips and the harvest bible in her lap and shook her head. “No, that’s quite alright dearest.” She smiled at him, “I believe I took matters into my own hands earlier, and this should suffice for now.” As she spoke, she seemed to have pulled a silken handkerchief from out of nowhere and used it to wipe the ink off of her hands.
“You also don’t have to be so formal around me dearest, please, just call me Mariel.” Honestly, Cain being so…nervous was making her nervous. “I expect to be seeing more of you from now on. I’ve decided to..well, I’ve decided to reside in this church from now on.” She shrugged, “So if…if you wouldn’t mind it, might I trouble you for some company and conversation? I’d like to learn more about you. If that is alright.”
"May I.. may I took a look at the revised document?” he questioned ever so tentatively, his curiosity getting the better of him. It would have taken a human years to correct the mistakes she’d mentioned at that point, and that was without taking in to consideration that which she had yet to tell him. Nevertheless, he was dealing with a goddess, and that she should finish this feat in mere moments was nothing surprising to him.
Her next request is one that he cannot so easily fulfill. He spoke this way with everyone, and formality came as natural to him as breathing. Everything else seemed simply.. wrong.
"I understand.. I’ll try my best,” he stuttered, trying to process the fact that she’d be living here of all places. “But.. certainly there’s a more fitting living situation to be found for a goddess such as yourself?”
“I would be more than happy to arrange one for you. It’s the very least I can do.”
Even more surprising yet was her interest in his own life. Certainly there was nothing he could tell her in which she didn’t already know..?
“Ah, yes, well.. my life’s none too interesting, I’m afraid. Most of it I’ve spent learning to be a man of the cloth,” folding his hands on his lap, he’d try his darnedest to keep some semblance of calm and collected, “I’ve a sister named Lillian, whom I lived with up until recently. She.. means a lot to me. I have prayed on her behalf more than anyone else’s. Though I’m certain you already knew that..”
Helping Hands || Request
[✿] —- “Yeah…? Monsters.” Raguna repeats, confused by Cain’s reaction to that. Did… did he think they were dangerous, maybe? “Oh, don’t worry. These monsters are pretty docile, so they won’t hurt you or anything.”
He walks deeper into the house, and waits until Cain is inside before closing the door, cutting off the heat from outside. When he hears Cain’s request, he nods, “Water? Great choice.”
Raguna walks over to the kitchen, gesturing to the couch as he does so. “Feel free to relax and make yourself at home! As they say– mi casa es tu casa.” He chuckles, and then opens the fridge, pulling out an ice cold pitcher of water. As he begins to pour the glasses, he starts to speak, “So, Cain… what made you want to work here?”
“I suppose my concern was obvious,” he gave a gentle laugh, “But that’s just as well.” He wasn’t 100% convinced that working alongside monsters was safe yet, but only time would tell. It’d be a real shame to miss out on an opportunity such as this on the basis of preconceived fears.
Smiling at Raguna, he’d stand beside the table and wait for him to take a seat. Cain felt strange sitting while the other was at work serving him. This wasn’t a restaurant; it was a job interview.
“Ah, estoy agradecido.” As for why he wanted to work here.. There was scarcely a pause as the priest had little need to think on such a question.
“I lived and worked on a farm on the mainland as a child and would like an opportunity to, well.. return to my roots, so to speak. I am not afraid of a little hard work,” he opened his palms that despite their long and bony fingers were covered with callouses—it was many, many years of hard work before he could call himself the head of the Daybreak Orphanage.
Rachel nodded as Cain looked in her bag of shells for some that he liked. Well, it was more so shells that his sister might like, but regardless he was the one choosing them. She giggled and nodded approvingly at the ones in his hands.
“You’re not being greedy at all! Leudian shells are really pretty and make a great gift. I’d hate to hoard them all on the island!” She raised her eyebrows in surprise, her mouth making an ‘o’ shape. “Oh, I never introduced myself! Sorry about that~” She giggled and held out her hand, holding the bag of shells in the other.
“My name is Rachel Scotts. I own a couple businesses on Leuda and live here, so hopefully I might see you come around! You should buy something from your sister at my clothing store! We sell swimsuits, mostly, so hopefully she can come to Leuda herself and take advantage of our beaches!”
Shaking his head, Cain was grateful that she’d realized this before he had a chance to bring it up. He hated being awkward; it kinda conflicted with his whole wise and put together priest getup.
“You are very kind, Rachel,”
“I will have to take you up on that offer. What’s the name of your store? Where can I find it located?” He didn’t mind shopping for Lillian; one, because Cain more often than not thought about her when they were separated, and two, because she all too often returned the favor.
Lillian sat up straight and looked at Cain with narrowed eyes and pouted lips. “Cain, it wasn’t like I was alone! I had my party members and even –” She paused and drew a blank.
Why can’t I remember?
This was weird. Weird and wrong.
Biting her lip, Lillian sighed through her nose and continued. “I’m sorry that I worried you. But you know that our–…” Their what? “…” This was unnerving.
She started to rub the pads of her fingers together. “Nevermind, I’m sorry.” She gave up and sighed, leaning back on the priest’s shoulder. “Please don’t worry too much Cee. It’ll get better. I’m a trooper. you know that.” She wrapped her arms around him in a gentle hug. “And…I don’t think I’m going to be that reckless anymore any time soon. I’m sorry that I worried you and that I did something stupid like that.” She mumbled.
“I can promise you that if I ever go off-island again I’ll have Doug or you with me. Is that okay?”
Cain’s eyes narrowed at her apparent confusion. His first instinct was to believe that she had second thoughts of mentioning whoever had joined her to avoid upsetting him, but scouring his brain, he failed to think of any individual that could fit that criteria.
“Our what?” he questioned just moments before changing his mind. He shouldn’t have grilled her like this, especially when she wasn’t feeling well.
“.. Very well,” placing his slender hand upon the arm that wrapped around him, he breathed, methodically and slow. “I accept your apology.” That being said, he wasn’t too keen on being compared to Doug.
“Nothing against your friend, but I’d prefer to be the one to accompany you. I feel that your group could have benefited from.. a capable healer,” he explained as humbly as possible.
Marla nodded, “I’m glad you understand~ Wasting food is a very bad thing to do! There are so many little fishies and humans I’m sure, that do not get enough to eat! I appreciate your apology, as I’m sure they would as well.”
The mermaid smiled down at her tail when it was mentioned, “Us mermaids are rare after all~ I’m Marla by the way~ It’s nice to meet you!” she held out a wet hand to the man, figuring shaking was a good thing to do when you met a person for the first time.
“A cassock? Clergy?” Marla blinked, “I’m confused…”
Cain knew full well the pangs of an empty stomach, and nodded along to Marla’s sentiments. Though they were of entirely different species, she seemed plenty wise to the needs of others. That being said, he wasn’t completely ignorant to the legend of the siren, either. Grabbing a hold of the dock with one hand just in case his willingness to please backfired profusely, he’d reach out to shake hers.
“I’m not surprised,”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Marla. My name is Cain.”
Still, how best to explain these terms that were apparently foreign to her..?
“Ah, yes, well.. I’m not certain if mermaid culture follows any sort of religion, but on land there are many people who worship a deity known as the Harvest Goddess: myself included. Those that devout their lives to her are known as a member of the clergy, and as for the cassock.. that is what the ‘dress’ I’m wearing is called,” he chuckled. Hopefully this wasn’t too much information for her to process.
Minori couldn’t help but feel impressed with this stranger, he clearly had a kind heart, and she wondered if that was a result of his being a priest, or that was reason he’d become one in the first place.
“Ah… No… My mother is really old fashioned. She didn’t like having a daughter that preferred playing in the mud with the boys. She’s always been really proper.” there was a tiny hint of sadness in her words, but she shrugged it off, playing it off as if it were no big deal.
“So, what’s your name? Or do I call you father?” she finally asked, seeming cheered up rather quickly as soon as the subject was changed. “I’m Minori. It’s nice to meet you.”
It was a little of both, to be sure. Given his upbringing and the values instilled upon him in the orphanage, Cain never considered the possibility of being anything except a priest.
“I see,”
“That’s a shame. I hope that my input is not intrusive, but I’ve always been under the opinion that girls do best when given the same freedoms of their counterparts.” Lillian would be a prime example of this; though she’d been an endless source of stress on his part growing up, Cain wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Father Cain, or simply Cain if you prefer. The pleasure is all mine, Minori.”
"ˢᵒᵐᵉᵗᶤᵐᵉˢ ᴵ ˢᵘʳᵖʳᶤˢᵉ ᵉᵛᵉᶰ ᵐʸˢᵉˡᶠˑˑ"
Lillian pouted and leaned towards Cain, her head resting on his shoulder. “I’m not a little kid anymore Cee, You know I don’t have to be watched constantly like I used to.” She mumbled, looking at the menu, scanning for options she’d prefer.
“Hmm…Yeah, that’s fine. Can I get pasta pescatore?” she asked, looking up at the priest.
“If they don’t have that, then anything with seafood is fine. Just nothing with y’know, meat.”
Pursing his lips, Cain tried to decide whether or not his case was one worth arguing. Folding the menu over in his lap, it took every effort to mind his tone with her. Whether he liked it or not, the frustration within him was surfacing like a pot left too long to boil..
“It’s not because I don’t think you are capable of taking care of yourself, Lillian”
“I only wish you wouldn’t take such risks when I’m not there to help you..” You knew he was serious when he started deliberately using her name. It seemed that dinner was momentarily foregone in favor of making his point.
“You can’t expect me to watch you go off without knowing what would come of it.. and now, seeing you like this.. Don’t you think you’ve given me more than enough reasons to worry?” Covering his mouth with his sleeve, a raspy, phlegmatic cough could be heard. Without a doubt, the priest had worried himself literally sick.
Something New || Gaia and Cain
@pioushart
When she had come to Arcadia, Gaia had already known of her sister’s presence on the island. She’d been delighted with the opportunity to stand at Mariel’s side again, and confidently took up work in the church without really asking permission. That was just her nature.
Today, she’d become entertained with cleaning the stained glass, and did so with a soft hum. Loving light, she would occasionally stop cleaning to admire the way the colored glass shone over her skin. She quickly noticed the focused eyes of someone with blue tresses flowing languidly over their shoulders, however, and turned to look at them.
“Are you gonna stare at me all day, human?”
Cain’s face colored a shameful hue as he was caught staring. He should have known better than to falter in the sight of what could only be assumed to be one of Mariel’s siblings. Were it not for her appearance that bore such similarity to the variation of the Goddess worshiped in his old village, it was that every nerve in his body tingled before her that gave it away.
It was the very same experience he recalled when meeting her sister.
“M-my sincerest apologies,”
“It will not happen again.. I was simply taken aback to find another person here so early in the morning.”
He’s uncertain as to how to breach such a topic, as there was always a possibility, however slim, that he was wrong, and Cain would never voluntarily be a fool.
“I don’t believe we’ve met before. Are you a new member of the church?"
“North west,” Ignis repeats, gazing over at Mt Reinier. He lifts the hand that is not holding puppies to point over in the direction he believes is north-west. “So I should go forth in that direction, if I am correct?”
Ignis looks over, his question hanging in the air between them, to find that the man has a frozen expression of politeness on his face. Ignis blinks. He has seen this expression before and suddenly his mind goes back to what Violet had said, the first time they met: friend, Cain, priest. Is this the same man?
“I am the Harvest King,” he repeats, and grins a low, sharp grin with a flash of amused teeth. “Are there not many Harvest Kings around here, no?”
Cain nodded ever so slowly in accordance to the position of the man’s gesture. Certainly, if his directions ceased to suffice, there would be someone along the way to help him: especially the closer he got to town.
“N-no, sir, I’m afraid not,”
“Nor have I ever met one before.. Not until now.” So it seemed the more deities he became acquainted with, the more in tune Cain became with sensing (and even attracting) their sheer presence.
“I hate to be presumptuous, my lord.. but have you any relation to the Harvest Goddess, Mariel?”
