Just discovered while researching Blue Jays for a commission that due to climate change, the Blue Jays' range has been expanding... which has led to instances of hybridization with Steller's Jays as their ranges overlap??
Look at you!! You are so goddamn pretty and cute!?
Thank all of you fellow bird nerds for validating my secret suspicions about this very dignified gem of a bird, who I am 100% sure is also an absolute agent of high-volume chaos.
HELLO AGAIN
Hi y’all - I’m not sure if anyone here remembers me, it must have been 3-5 years since I last posted - I lost access to this account a long time ago and only just got back in (I’ve been vibing over on twitter for the most part.)
a LOT changed for me - I’m now an out trans masc, I’ve had top surgery, I have cat named Limbo who is a little RASCAL but I love her, I have an incredibly queer partner who is an amazing cook, I live in the city, and I’ve made a heap of photography progress. Life is stressful, but good.
I’m not sure if I’ll come back here properly, but it’s nice to remember - and at any rate, I hope y’all are doing well. Happy holidays <3
Ignorant fools/racists:
More white people are killed by cops that black people.

Nope.

"You were sent this video because you either said or posted on social media the following statement. "More white people are killed by the cops than black people."
There's 191 million white people, 42 million Black people. You divide 191 by 42, and you find out there's 4.55 [times] as many white people as there are Black people.
So, in 2019, there was 370 white people killed by the cops. And, 370 divided by 4.5 will yield the number 82. That's how many Black people should have been killed by the cops if all things were equal, if it was proportionate.
However, there was 235 Black people killed by the cops. Divided by 82, the number it should have been, you'll find out that's a number 2.87 times higher than what it should have been.
There's three times as many Black people killed than white people by the cops, per capita. So there you have it. Now you understand the numbers, you understand what you were saying is wrong. You can stop saying that dumb shit. And always rem-"

just stumbled across Francisco Soria Aedo’s work and first off: really good painter, super talented. He mainly did portraits and neoclassical but I really like are his expressions, which do show up in his neoclassical work. lots of people smiling and having fun and it’s just very cute
this is one of my favorites
heres a couple more examples!
…i dont thing I’ve ever seen this style with people smiling…
The reason it feels so post-modernist and odd to see wide smiles in this style is because showing teeth in classical art was considered lurid and too openly sexual (kinda like nipples in 2020 cough). Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun caused waves as a neoclassical painter in 1787 because her self-portrait featured her smiling with lips parted and showing a peek of her teeth. Since Francisco Soria Aedo was active around the 1930′s it was no longer an issue to show teeth in general yet it still serves as a subversion of the classical ‘look’.
How Shea Butter is made is the Northern Region of Ghana
Video by Hamamat Mantia
Her ig : @iamhamamat
Her skin is proof
But she’s like so adorable
this is magic
who. is. she.
That’s Hamamat Montia! (Her name is actually spelled incorrectly above.) She’s a Ghanaian supermodel and the 2006 winner of Miss Malaika Ghana, a Ghanaian beauty pageant and reality TV show.
(Blast from the past on that last one… Hamamat winning her Miss Malaika crown in 2006!)
In addition to her job as a model, Hamamat is an entrepreneur and activist. She’s the founder of Africa Eats Now, an organization committed to reducing malnutrition throughout Africa.
She also just recently launched a series of children’s books, Zuzu & Sasa, which tells the story of two Ghanaian sisters whose adventure throughout Africa discovering magic, gaining self-confidence, and learning about African culture and history.
I believe she’s now moved back to Ghana after being away for a while. In the videos, she’s visiting her family in Tamale in the Northern Region of Ghana. (Shea butter is a suuuuper important product for many communities in that region.)
She’s also a mum and has two little ones of her own. :3
In conclusion, Hamamat is a stunning and very accomplished Ghanaian woman!
For more about Hamamat’s visit to Tamale, you can check out her instagram here or this article. For more of the Accra photoshoot (the one with Hamamat in front of the Ghanaian flag motorway pillar) check out this one.
Hope that helps! :3
I think about this post a lot
She is stunning

“So back in the day pets already ruined their owner’s artwork.” - My sis who took the photo
“ruined”? made better
It’s very humanizing to imagine some poor potter in the past screaming “nnnnooooooo bad kitty” somewhere in Scandinavia
If it was ruined, the artisan wouldn’t have baked it.
That’s… that’s a delightful point you just made.
This person chose to bake and keep their cat’s artistic contribution.
i was in spain once and there was a building with a tile that had been laid down in roman times: it had a dog’s paw print. and the thing was that after the dog did that print, the wet tile was dried, and then fired, and then shipped, and then laid, and for two thousand years every person who encountered that tile thought ‘aw! paw print!’ and kept it. this vast agreement by thousands of people over all these centuries, in memory of a dog only one of us could have met.
i loved that tile.

“You learn from the part of the story you focus on.”
— Hannah Gadsby, Nanette
“They say that there are only three or four or five topics for literature, but maybe there’s only one: belonging. Perhaps all books can be read in function of the desire to belong, or the negation of that desire. To be part of or stop being part of a family, of a community, a country, of Chilean literature, a football team, a political party, a rock band, the fan club of a rock band, or at least a group of scouts. That’s what we write about when we’re given a free topic, and also when we think we are writing about love, death, travel, telegrams or suitcases with swivel wheels. That’s what we always talk about, seriously or in jest, in verse and in prose: belonging.” — Alejando Zambra, Not to Read

This is what you call Waffle House at 2 am when the bars close and everyone is drunk and hungry
*group of people having fun* this site: wtf this is so scary
People having safe fun at a waffle house is scary for most Tumblr bloggers, reports say.
Some context for those not familiar with Waffle House Culture:
Waffle House is one of the few chains in America that’s open 24/7/365, and where you can get both breakfast and lunch/dinner options at any time (I have had so many Breakfast Cheeseburgers at Waffle Houses). The food is really good, and people eat there at all times of the day or night, but it’s particularly popular as a late-night post-drinking spot because it’s all that’s open and it’s the kind of food that tastes especially good when you’re hammered.
Part of Waffle House Protocol is that all the servers and cooks greet every single customer as they come through the door. It sounds lame, but I’ve never been to a Waffle House where that greeting didn’t feel completely heartfelt. My mom is a health nut who could barely find anything on the menu she was willing to eat and yet she describes the Christmas Day lunch we had there one year as one of the nicest meals she’s ever had because everyone was so warm and welcoming. That sense of camaraderie gets turned up to 11, of course, at 2 a.m. when everyone’s shitfaced.
The jukeboxes have Waffle-House-themed songs on them (once you have heard “Raisins in my Toast” you will be earwormed forever) and there is an arcane system of hash brown ordering: scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, topped, diced, peppered, and/or capped. The hot sauce bottles say “Casa de Waffle.”
Once, in Oxford (UK), my husband and I walked past a kebab van very late one night and he said “why do I smell Waffle House”
The location of most Waffle Houses means there’s some… classism that tends to get tied up with Anti-Waffle House Discourse, which is probably lending itself, in part, to this being such a fraught topic. (I’m looking at a map and apparently I was born and raised right in the middle of the Peak Waffle House Density Zone)
It is, in the words of chef Anthony Bourdain, “indeed marvelous— an irony-free zone where everything is beautiful and nothing hurts; where everybody regardless of race, creed, color or degree of inebriation is welcomed.”
This was adorable lmao
WAFFLE HOUSE IS SACRED NEUTRAL GROUND
An old friend of mine has a tradition of going to our local Waffle House at 3am New Years Morning because he always felt lonely and he just felt at home there. One year he brought me into it and we did it almost every year together when we lived in the same city. We’re not friends anymore, but every time I go into a Waffle House that feeling of togetherness and friendship washes over me.
