personally think this goes under appreciated about dps but the setting of the movie is a important reason of why the message of the movie is more impactful. rambling under cut.

Dead Poets Society is set at Welton, a private boarding school for upper-middle class white boys. not in an oppressed community. not in a poorer public school. but a rich kid with parental issues haven.

and yet they rebel. they sneak away to read poetry and eat with their left hands. they go against their parents wishes and do their own thing. yes, you could say that "they’re teenage boys; it’s in them to rebel.” but to rebel so greatly against the standards they benefit from? to act out against heteronormativity by doing “unmanly” things like poetry and theatre? to seize the day to the point of no return?

when we think of concepts like patriarchy and nationalism and whatnot, we tend to assume that just because a person is benefitting from the rules that they wouldn’t dare act out on it. but by making dps set at Welton— a hotbed of privilege— we see the cast not as privileged students, but as youth fighting for independence, freedom, and everything that makes life worth living.

and that makes the narrative harder to dismiss. you couldn’t chalk off rebellious behavior of this extremity to the typical oppressed. no; these were people who were born lucky at every aspect of American society’s discrimination, and yet they chose to break out of this traditional system— of the rules and conformities.

that, of course, would mean that there was something deeply wrong with the system. if even the molded soldiers fight back, that must mean there is something wrong with the mold.
