was annihilation (2018) a good movie? mostly.

it really captured the biological aspect and the ending was kept open, similar to the book.

could it have done without the biologists infidelity? ABSOLUTELY.

could it have done more with the psychologist? YES.

could it have done more with the tower? AGAIN YES.

was it good despite these issues? i say so.

what really irks me is how they DESTROYED the biologist’s character. the cheating sub plot was never needed, yes they had to convey the issues in her and her husbands relationship BUT THEY COULDVE DONE THAT BY JUST STICKING TRUE TO THE BIOLOGISTS CHARACTER FROM THE BOOK. it would’ve given her more depth and backstory.

despite the character writing, they convey the changes and mutations in a horrifying way (which means good) and the shimmer looks exactly how i’d imagined it, while there were many things i wish they would’ve included in the movie, i can recognize there was a budget and time limit in production.

in my opinion, it’s not surprising they didn’t stay true to the book, but it’s still an OKAY interpretation of it

EXCEPT FOR THE CHEATING. NEVER FUCKING NEEDED.

another thing i enjoyed was the depiction of the crawler, IT LOOKED AWESOMEEEE but i wish they would’ve kept the setting the same, by keeping it farther underground it would’ve made it a whole lot more terrifying, but it would’ve made the possibility of the biologist making it out less likely and believable

the doubt you have for if the biologist is the true biologist is important to the theme and feelings the movie should portray, by making it somewhat believable that it’s really the biologist your doubt continues to fester
