reflecting back on this since it’s not going to be happening anytime soon
2019: 4 Continents, 11 Countries, 30 Places
I made a quick little MV to encapsulate what 2019 was for me.
I've been exploring, eating, and experiencing a whole bunch of firsts including:
Nomad life on the Tibetan Plateau
The Harbin Ice Festival
Bathing elephants in Thailand
Bison/geyser gazing in Yellowstone Park
Blizzcon!!!
Beach hopping the Cote d'Azur
The vistas of Lisbon
Sri Lanka (just Colombo, on a layover... but hey, solo walking an entire new city in a day is its own experience)
… And, most excitingly, anywhere at all in India (Bengaluru) and Africa (Kenya and Ethiopia)! Yes, they are two gigantic areas of the world, but they're ones that people in my circles have expressed being too scared to visit. I hope that what tales I came back with and what videos I made (and am making) of them cause friends & family to reconsider.
Plus, the really life altering moves of:
Quitting my job and putting a generally successful (doing okay? steadily climbing-ish?) corporate career on halt.
Making myself virtually homeless and more or less stuffless by selling off the bulk of what I own.
Putting myself out there as a Youtuber.
I'm still a little shy about saying the last one. But hopefully the last 6 months of semi-regularly churning out lil' Youtube projects have improved my video making skills somewhat and I'll be able to be more confident about my film & editing competence going straight into 2020.
But hey, in case you haven't noticed, getting on Youtube also meant that I started writing on this blog again - a more familiar way for me to put myself out there.
I think I will always be thankful for the skill sets and life lessons my 5/6 years in communications & advertising gave me, but woah has it been exciting and invigorating to stretch these muscles again: hunting for stories, diving deep into what interests me, trying to walk that fine line between injecting personality into my pieces and narcissistic navel gazing. Heh.
Well, even if what's entering the world is unwatchable to anyone but myself, I'm glad I have such copious documentation of what I've been doing with my life since I jumped off the "What I Think Adults Should Do" path. As someone who's still mildly anxious that I'm not being high achieving enough, it's a good reminder that I have been doing ~something~.
Happy 2020!
Hello, it's been a while
Back when I had an active Tumblr, I think maybe every fourth or fifth post would start out as "I'm sorry, the two readers who actually care about hearing updates from me, for the absence!" I'm not going to do that here because:
1) I'm not even sure I have two readers on this thing. Blogging is so Aughts. Squarespace doesn't have some sort of RSS feed in the community option and I can not see myself EVER turning this into an email newsletter. So expressing guilt over what essentially is me talking to myself seems... unproductive.
2) I'm fairly active on Facebook and Instagram, which is where the people I care about updating my life to end up getting updates on my life anyway.
3) That's not the point of this site. Or at least, I don't think it was the point of this site. What IS the point of this site?
Oh right. I think it was to basically have some sort of easy archive for long-form writing now that I've stopped blogging/reporting for a living.
I think it was also my attempt at lifestyle writing. And I guess one thing I realized halfway through last year was that as much as I love going places & seeing new things & eating basically everything in sight, it was hard for me to write something that *I*, a perpetual sarcastic curmudgeon who generally disdains ~positivity~ and ~this glamorous life~ posts, would actually find interesting.
Turns out that when you’re blogging for yourself, and you’re not engaged in what you’ve wrote, it’s really hard to stay motivated to keep writing. Go figure!
Also though, full disclosure, I was hit by a major depressive episode sometime in mid-March, brought on by a mix of a come-down from the high of non-stop travel, the really meh Shanghai weather, a very boring post-project work life, and well… possibly years of littler depressive episodes I’d chosen to ignore.
I won’t get into it much here, except that it took nearly all of Spring and much of Summer to dig myself out of that hole. It made it so I didn’t want to meet anyone or talk to anybody. Forcing myself to maintain important relationships through the haze of my depression took up 90% of my mental energy. Fortunately, being a functional depressive still helped me come up generally aces, what with joining new political organizations, pushing through various work projects and some bursts of vacationing and freelancing even. So that, even as I came home everyday and lay prone on a couch contemplating the many ways I could just fucking disappear already, there was no outwardly visible sign of my deteriorating mental state - as my Instagram can attest. There's a lesson in here, kids!
I’m better now though! Kinda!
I was invited by my company to move into a different, much more busy role in a new city in China. Unlike my last posting, I have almost no time on my hands, running from project to project non-stop ten hours a day. And yet, being this busy has ignited a fire to write for myself again! Funny how that works.
So, hi from Beijing!
I’m not promising anything, but hopefully this means more posts are a-coming.

A toast to Daikichi (大吉) and the rest of the amazing Japanese & Korean restaurants on #古羊路 in #Gubei that will be shuttered by the end of month. 😭😭😭 Apparently the Guyang Road Leisure Street close down is due to another metro line being built, which is nice. But so far nobody knows where these restaurants will scatter to in the meantime. #sigh #development #shanghai #chinalife (at 上海市古羊路)

Dollar #oyster #happyhours are the best things and I am legit depressed that they aren't as prolific in Shanghai. These dozen eaten at The Saint Austere in #Williamsburg #nyeats #brooklyneats #food (at The Saint Austere)
Just remembering this stuff makes me exhausted.
A rainbow bagel with bacon & cheddar cream cheese from The Bagel Store. I guess normally you're supposed to order it with funfetti cream cheese but even thinking about that much sugar in the morning makes me queasy. The bacon cheddar was slightly spicy and 100% 👏👏👏 #newyorkeats #food (at The Bagel Store -Scot Rossillo's Original Rainbow Bagel)

Oh #SpringFestivalGala, never change. China's annual giant tv event this year really REALLY embraced the theme of #YearoftheCock #chunwan #春晚 #春晚2017 #chinalife

One of my favorite sub-reddits is r/AskHistorians, but even for a forum where answers are heavily moderated to filter out junk, enforce polite civility, and require citations, this is an amazingly detailed answer.
I personally never really thought about why Indonesia or Malaysia are majority-Muslim, but I am thrilled to have learned this much about Indonesia and Malaysian pre-1850s history because someone asked.
Hard to believe that we've had a connection with #Shanghai for so long: this January is the 20 year anniversary of the Chows moving to this city. Back in 1997, the Pearl Tower was literally the only building in Lujiazui, Tony Roma's and Swensons were the only place to get American food (discounting KFC) and all our friends in Hong Kong thought we were crazy to preempt their return to China by actually going to China. And now, 20 years later, it's almost like I don't know how I could bear to leave. 😅 (at Shanghai, China)
Getting a facial and some falsies done right before I fell deeply ill and feverish has made me into the most glam, dewey-faced sick person ever. Welcome to #2017! #selfie #selfienation (at Shanghai, China)

Photos and Gifs that inspired me to make funny animations of them, mostly shared by you, so thanks !
