The fluorescent lights of the office shone bright as you typed away on your computer, eyes straining as you concentrated a little too much on a mediocre email.
It had been a long day and you just needed a break from everything. Rubbing your red eyes a knock is heard on your office door.
Schlatt pops his head in.
“Busy?”
You leaned back in your chair, looking at him with low eyes.
“I can take a break, what’s up?”
“Dinner tonight, at 7?” He quirked an eyebrow.
“Why?”
“Because I want to take you out”
You thought on it for a moment. You desperately just wanted to head home after work and chill for the night, maybe put on a shitty show and just go braindead.
You glanced at the time, 10 till 5.
You looked back at him as he waited for an answer.
“Where?” You groaned out.
“So many questions”
He shifted, leaning against the doorframe.
“Nothing fancy, just a calm dinner”
A silence fell. You sighed.
“Fine”
His clap of excitement echoed through your office, making you jump a little.
“Pick you up at 7:45” He winked before walking out.
You groaned, forehead coming in contact with your desk.
“So, Date with J tonight?”
You look up to see your coworker and office mate, Mandy.
“It’s not a date”
“Right, and I love my job”
You turn your chair as she sits in hers.
“It’s not”
“Okay” She sips her drink as she types away on her computer.
You give up on convincing and get back to typing.

The doorbell rang at 7:37 sharp, putting on a piece of jewelry you open the door.
J stood there, jeans and a button up, nothing exciting but something jumped inside you at the sight. A handful of flowers in his hand.
“You look-“
You cut him off.
“This isn’t a date”
He blinks.
“Did I say it was?”
“No, the flowers did”
You glance at the florals that are slowly wilting away.
“I can’t just bring flowers to be a gentleman? Wow, how rude” He joked.
You roll your eyes.
“Come in. I haven’t finished getting ready so just, sit on the couch or whatever”
He closes your front door as you walk back into your room.
He roamed around your living area. Your place wasn’t huge, it was the best a $55,000 salary could get you.
“Your place is nice” He shouted, picking up a nearby photo.
“It’s Alright” You replied, walking out from the room. “Alright, let’s go”
He cleared his throat, nodded walking out the door behind you.

The drive to the restaurant was short but tense. This wasn’t a date so why did it feel like something more than just two coworkers hanging out?
The restaurant was all BUT casual. Lit candles on the tables, Jazz music plying faintly, expensive table cloths, and low lighting.
You sat at a two person table feeling way out your element.
“This is fancy J, you lied”
“I said calm”
“You said not fancy”
“It’s not”
“They have a wine guy”
“All good places have a wine guy”
You whined. He smirked, scanning the menu.
You nervously scanned the area. Sure, you weren’t the only one “dressed down” for the place but it felt morally wrong in your head, like you’d be shot if you so as dared asked the waiter to kindly up the lighting a bit.
“Know what you want?”
Jay asked, lowering his menu a bit.
“Oh uhm“ You quickly scanned the menu. “It’s all so.-“
“Didn’t ask the price, I asked what you wanted”
"The Lobster Pasta sounds good" You said with a shrug.
"I was thinking the same, let's share"
You glared at him.
"Can you not be so...boyfriendy."
"I'm being nice, saving money. That’s what you wanted, no?"
"You're trying to get something out of me "
"No. I respect you"
You scoff, "Right"
"No offense but not everyone is trying to fuck you"
You didn't respond.

The rest of dinner was silent. The only speaking was to the waiter who definately could feel the tension.
Jay paid, you didn't even try to fight him on it at this point in the night. It was late and you were basically falling asleep in the restaurant.
Getting back into his car, you guys stay out in the lot.
“Well…Are you taking me home?”
“Why don’t you like any interaction, platonic or not?”
The question threw you out of loop.
“What are you talking about?”
“Dont be stupid, You hated the flowers I got you, hate that I took you out, and I know you hated me paying. I just want to know why you won’t let me, anyone, in”
He stared at you as you looked out the passenger side window.
He sighed.
“Just, I care about you. We’ve known each other for years and I never once have I seen you even take a compliment. It’s just- I care is all”
“I take compliments”
“Really? You got told you looked great the other day by Ted and you just told him he was a
liar”
“I didn’t, I had gotten no sleep”
“You’re still cute with no sleep” He mumbled.
Silence.
“My last ex wasn’t the best to me, okay?” You say, staring down at your legs.
“How so?”
“I don’t want to get into the details. It’s been 6 years but it still feels fresh”
“You deserve better”
You hum.
“You deserve to be loved properly” He whispered as he reached his hand over to hold yours.
“Jay”
“Yeah?”
“Thanks”
“Anytime” He smiled.
Starting the car he pulls out the parking lot.
