so talkative. loren sighs and decides against her brilliant idea of pretending not to see him point; she couldn’t risk not getting food down her. they’re soon settled in a booth and loren doesn’t need to look over the menu before she’s picked what to eat ( it was always the same: double fries, two fried eggs sunny side up, an orange juice and a milkshake ). doe eyes look him over and she huffs, “ so. this is fun. i’m having fun. “ but her tone is flat, expression similar.
HE’S LOOKING AT A NEWSPAPER THAT HE picked up on their way in, seeing if he can spot his own name -- or hers, for that matter -- in the columns. occasionally, he raises a mug to his lips to sip coffee, half - ignoring the burger they’d brought out ... read first, eat in a second. it’s loren that catches his attention , pulling him out of the words on the page. snake quirks a brow at her. “ beggars on the run shouldn’t be choosers about the company they’re stuck with. “ hell, he’d come to terms with that the day they got stuck in this situation. finally, though, snake set down the newspaper with a rustle of paper and commenced to eat. “ i’m the one payin’ for this shit. i hope you’re having fun. “
thermalities:
❝ [ 𝚜𝚗𝚊𝚔𝚎 ], hmm? ❞ she doesn’t sound enthused or even convinced: but a vague signal aimed at ice seems to signal 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘩, 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘨𝘶𝘺, 𝘶𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺. she relaxes, arms crossing in front of her chest ──── a gesture of truce, with how her hands appear out-of-way.
❝ a͟l͟r͟i͟g͟h͟t͟. & it’s 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗘, not green. not that it’s any more imaginative, now that i think about it [ … ] ❞
❝ & i’m 𝗜𝗖𝗘! ❞ a figure comes barreling back into scene to stand next to fire, practically bouncing in comparison to the other’s crooked and unaffected posture. she points to herself, a flicker of past guilt on her face, as if to say: yes, ice, sorry about that. ❝ someplace else? well, if you’re sure [ … ] you do seem to know this city better than i ──── ❞
𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐄: better than both of us ──── still can’t find my in this rubble. lead the way, snake. also, you got another cig?
“ COME ON. OUT THE BACK WAY -- DONT wanna risk bein’ seen with the two of you. “ snake remarks, rationally : he gestures a hand for them to follow along, and begins to walk, tamping out another cigarette from the case and offering it to fire wordlessly. he sure looked tough as nails, but he wasn’t always against sharing a little bit. when he opened the door, cold wind rushed into his face , and instinctively he pulled up the collar of his jacket. a little more walking, a few twists and turns, and they found themselves in a quiet alley between buildings : narrow and private. by the time they got there, he’d smoked the cigarette ; he tossed it, stamped on it, and lit another one.
“ illegal weapons are the name of the game. “ snake confided, leaning against the brick wall with indulgent tiredness and maximum indifference. ( hell, he’d spy on the justice league international too if he got paid enough ... he was almost certain they were as dumb as the criminals he was currently ‘ palling around ‘ with, but he didn’t want to judge too quick. dumb or not, he was still a little dizzy from the hit ice had dealt him. ) “ this thursday there’s a shipment coming in. if you’re interested in stoppin’ em , you might wanna bring extra capes. “ he tapped ashes from his cigarette, remarking, “ they hired more gunmen to be there than usual. might be savvy to the fact that i’m a rat. “

so petite, she frowns momentarily – he’s including her? brows thread together and she hesitantly pulls on her large denim jacket, scrambling to her feet and pocketing the keys to the room, “ okay, okay… “ and she follows dutifully, hopping into her seat, trying to keep quiet, not let on just how excited she was to be spending time with him. sharing a cigarette with him. “ the, um.. your hair. looks good. i’m a good hairdresser. “ something to fill the quiet, fill the gap.
INDEED, HE IS QUIET A LONG MOMENT : MULLING OVER the precise right words to say, what he wants to say, how to say it ... what information to give that won’t feel to similar to hot coals against your nerves. he smokes silently for a while as trees pass them by, one hand on the steering wheel, before nodding slightly in response to her words. “ yeah. “ he agrees with her. and then -- for the first time in the entirety of their journey -- snake really begins to speak.
“ had long hair my whole life. only buzzed it short when i enlisted - sarge said i looked too much like a hippie. among other things. “ pensively, he took a drag, looking out at the road as if that’s who he was talking to. “ got me kinda superstitious, in hindsight. when i got rid a’ that hair, everything seemed to go wrong. i mean ... fucking . everything. “ he remembered , when he visited his parents grave for the first time , laying his head on his mother’s headstone, closing his eyes, and remembering the way she would card her fingers through his hair. snake’s throat felt tight. he tossed the cigarette out. “ hardly ever cut it since then. kinda paranoid, i guess. reminds me too much of ... all of it. “ snake glanced over to her, blue eye meeting her brown ones. was that sincerity within them? “ i’ve been shitty. i ain’t mad at you. “ i’m mad at everybody else in the world. not you.
the winter of the witch, pt. 7.
dialogue prompts from the winter of the witch by katherine arden.
there will be room for all of us.
i am glad you are not dead.
i want some dry clothes.
shall we submit or shall we fight?
even a victory will cost you.
i will trust you.
what will you need?
i never said thank you.
i met your mother.
has your gift brought you any happiness?
how old are you?
the wicked can still mourn.
only tired, i think.
[name] was very brave.
i am damned already, but i do not wish to be alone.
but who will i be if i go with you?
who am i if i cannot help my people?
i still have to try.
i am sorry for what i said.
you never understood, did you?
you hurt me.
tell me the truth, [name].
you’re no coward, i’ll give you that.
you are planning something. what is it?
work on the most ignorant face you can manage.
will you carry me?
we need to get help first.
why did you come back?
are we going to do anything interesting?
what does that have to do with me?
the world is wide and very beautiful.
i have never been anyone’s servant.
what happened? love. betrayal. and time.
WELCOME TO THE HUMAN RACE.
CARING FOR STUBBORN MUSES. for when the person you’re trying to care for insists they don’t need your help.
“at least let me clean the wound!” “you’ll be even worse off if you don’t let me bandage this.” “i really think you need to see a doctor.” “i made you some soup, and i’m going to sit here until you eat it. i can wait.” “your feelings matter too! i can’t help you if i don’t even know what’s making you upset!” “..i’m here if you need anything, okay?” “stop trying to push yourself! you can’t do this on your own!” “listen, i know you don’t want to, but.. maybe you should rest for a while. you’re not going to get anywhere like this.” “i’ll make you a deal: i’ll just get you some bandages, and nothing else, and you stop making a fuss over it.” “how long has it last been since you slept?” “have you even been taking your medicine?” “i know you think you have to get through this by yourself, but you have people here to help you.” “let me take care of you, for once.” “you’re gonna hurt yourself even more if you do stupid things like that!” “i hate to break it to you, but you’re not supposed to do any strenuous physical activity for the next couple weeks, and if i have to personally make sure you don’t every waking hour of the day then i’m fully prepared to do that.” “it’s okay to cry in front of me, you know. you don’t have to carry this alone.” “stop trying to act like you’re not bleeding out in front of me!! this is serious!” “listen, asshole. i’m gonna carry you home whether you like it or not. you’re not in any condition to get there yourself.” “oh my god, why didn’t you tell me it was this bad?!”
new starter call !!!
I don’t have “trust issues”. I got “I’ve seen this type of shit before so I be damned if I go through it all over again” type of issues.

“Alright, Plissken.” Lex thought for a moment, and lit his cigarette, and her own.
She didn’t want to say they needed protection, but he looked like he knew what he was talking about. And if he dies… Well, then that’s one other body on the trail to Maine. She didn’t think Hannah would very much like another dead friend, another Ethan… She looked down at Hannah, who was beaming up at Snake. “What do you say, Banana? You want Mr. Plissken to come with us?” Hannah nodded. “Okay, deal. But I drive.”
Next thing they knew, the three of them were in the car together. Before Snake could get in the front passenger seat, Hannah caught his sleeve with his small hand, she wanted him to sit with her in the back, get to know her new friend. She was looking at him intently, still staring, but there was a brightness in her eyes now. A curiosity about this man, Snake Plissken, the one eyed man who decided to come with them, protect them.
The car was a beat up old thing, but it was reliable, it got them this far after all. “Why Snake?” Hannah asked, poking his belly, right where his tattoo is. “Hannah, don’t poke him, you don’t know where he’s been… Neither do I for that matter, you said you had a resume, right?”
SOMETIMES YOU WAKE UP FROM A NAP and everything changes. these new travel partners were certainly odd ... especially the younger one. ( it had been years since someone had looked at him and hadn’t seen a legitimate threat, something to be afraid of, a rabid dog with its teeth bared threateningly. someone who looked at him like they saw who he was underneath the skin ... and snake didn’t like it. it put him in a headspace that was ... distracting and unpleasant, to say the least. ) nonetheless, snake sat in back with the kid, because he wasn’t the keenest at conversing with the elder any more with the younger. for a handful of minutes, he sat with his head turned out the window, smoking the cigarette in its entirely before flicking it carelessly out onto the road.
then, he felt a poke against his stomach and turned his head. he met hannah’s gaze a long moment, and then explained in his gruff, quiet voice : “ had to army - crawl in the military. “ which was certainly leaving out the bulk of reasons behind the name. ( he thought it odd she should poke the tattoo along with the inquiry. weird kid. ) “ ‘s a long time ago. just stuck. “
turning to meet lex’s gaze in the mirror, he remarked dryly, “ yeah. survived this long in this shit - scape since world war iii , and intending to stay that way. that’s all that matters. “
thermalities:
scoffing, 𝙱𝙴𝙰𝚃𝚁𝙸𝚉 takes center stage: she comes up to him, idling at an arm’s length away, waiting for him to collect himself. ❝ 𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐍? ( that’s all you’ve got? ), good to see that ice didn’t hit you too hard. ❞ her eyes narrow at the man’s disclosure but otherwise gives nothing away [ 𝚜𝚑𝚎’𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚖𝚎𝚛 𝚜𝚙𝚢 𝚘𝚏 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚝𝚠𝚘, 𝚊𝚏𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚊𝚕𝚕 ]. turning back to glance at her partner, fire engages in a hushed, rapidfire dialogue that [ … ] m͟i͟g͟h͟t͟ ͟ ͟ ͟n͟o͟t͟ ͟ ͟ ͟b͟e͟ ͟ ͟ ͟s͟o͟ ͟ ͟ ͟h͟u͟s͟h͟e͟d͟.͟
[ 𝙲𝙾𝙽𝚃'𝙳 ] he’s our guy, ice. 𝙸𝙲𝙴 (𝚐𝚊𝚜𝚙) oh! so he’s [ ... ] the ❛ 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗡 ❜? ice, very helpfully, provides air quotes. 𝙵𝙸𝚁𝙴 well, probably. i’ll get back to you on that.
❝ s͟o͟,͟ ❞ & she draws the syllable out, ❝ let’s try that again. WHO’RE YOU SUPPOSED TO BE? ❞ her conversational tone doesn’t conceal the hard note of 𝙞 𝙬𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙧.
A SMALL GLARE HARDENS ALREADY - UNHAPPY expression , his furrowed brows and glinting blue eye almost saying : forgive me for not being more creative after just getting the shit socked out of me ! this was why he hated working with these ... superhero types . it wasn’t much different from actually being on the criminals side : always some holier than thou bullshit around the corner, always walking on eggshells . he stood a minute, watching the two of them converse , before remarking ( more to himself than anything ) & fishing his cigarette pack out of his inner pocket : “ still standin’ here, ladies. “
as the green one, fire, turned to him, he lit the cigarette ( wondering if he could have just offered it to her to light / not in the mood for a more thorough ass kicking than was necessary ), brow quirking as he listened. “ snake, “ he said simply : i’ve got a dumbass one - word name just like the two of you. “ got paid by your ... league , to recover info. so, i did. “ looking past beatriz at tora, snake continued ( as if he couldn’t give less of a damn about these affairs ), “ ... might wanna discuss it someplace a little more private. “
@bowmerta asked: i’m trying to stop the bleeding.
“ IT’S FINE. -- LEAVE IT ALONE, IT’S FINE. “ snake hisses painfully, attempting to create a bit of distance between the two of them despite the fact that he was prone on the ground and helena was leaning over him, attempting to help him with the unfortunate gunshot wound he’d just received in the leg by some goon. ( having the shocking pain of that wash over his body & having someone in his personal space right now was just too much for him -- he was always one who needed room. ) “ i can do it, “ he told her. this, of course, was not his first rodeo. not in gotham. “ don’t wait for me. go get that asshole - i’ll find you. go. “
