You're doing a whole series on the designs of Pokemon/Pokemon characters, and I had the idle thought: do you have thoughts on characters' partner Pokemon as an extension of their character design?

It's not clear to me how often that ever actually happens holistically, but it's certainly a tool the series uses constructively.

What I mean by that is, it doesn't seem to me like characters are designed specifically in conjunction with a specific Pokémon, where the mon and character act as extensions of one another's character designs. Giovanni has his famous Persian (in the anime anyway), and that Pokémon suits him well, but Persian wasn't designed to complement Giovanni. Ghetsis has his Hydreigon that uses Frustration at max power, which certainly tells us something about what he's like as a character, but Hydreigon was not initially designed for Ghetsis.

And I'm sure someone who's more into the weeds of trivia than me would know if I'm wrong here, but to my knowledge, while there are plenty of human characters who are designed to reflect Pokémon, there are barely any Pokémon that were designed specifically to reflect a human character. The one example I can think of off the top of my head is Nihilego and Lusamine, where Nihilego's shape design matches Lusamine's, and they seem designed specifically to fit together.

Nihilego acts as both an isolating bubble, shutting Lusamine further away from reality and her children, as well as a "crown" or royal mantle, and acts as an extension of Lusamine's devouring mother archetype with the many staring eyes and enveloping tentacles. Surveillance and constriction.

And of course, Llilie's initial design at the start of the game has more than a passing resemblance to Nihilego's shape language, which again raises this idea of Lusamine trying to figuratively climb inside of her daughter, to make her child an extension of herself, which is familiar to certain kinds of narcissistic parental abuse narratives.

and I am once again reminded how much Lillie is just the actual main character of Pokémon Sun and Moon and how much better the game would have been if we'd gotten to play as her, instead of a useless blank slate permasmiling player avatar doofus whose only function and capacity in the world is to win pokémon battles.

For anybody not caught up: Tennessee just passed a new map that pretty much makes it so black neighborhoods have no power in local votes. Two things about this. While protestors were chanting "No Jim Crow", white Tennessee lawmakers were caught laughing on video. On top of this, Representative Justin Pearson and his brother KeShaun Pearson were arrested for trying to give their takes on the matter (which is not only their legal right but literally his job). If you give a shit about black people, help fight this. We can't allow a return to Jim Crow.

Like a month ago I messaged a craft group about accessibility for wheelchairs and the answer I got was “there’s a lot of stairs but we have cute boys who can carry you”. And it’s…not good. As a wheelchair bound person I largely depend on people when I want to go out and do *anything* so I’m used to it, I laugh it off, make an annoyed post about it and off I go. But I wanna just say a thing real quick.

Even if I wasn’t gay, wasn’t a survivor scared of men, getting help as a disabled person is just…Not a pleasant thing to us! Imagine for a sec how you’d feel being carried up a flight of stairs. You’re a grown person. You’re being touched in an awkward way. You’d rather do it yourself. You’re So Uncomfortable. It’s not where I look for the beginning of a romantic relationship. So like…could abled people stop doing this thing where they think helping us in a condescending and infantilizing way is cute? Cause I’m real tired. Just get me a ramp or lift and I’m cool. I don’t need a dating service when I’m just trying to go about my day

I recently found out why my mom would never sleep around me when I was a kid. Like she’d never let herself take naps or sleep if I was awake, ever. Or if she did, she would lock her bedroom door. So when I was 6, I was asleep in my bed in the middle of the night when I hear a loud bang, like a pot being dropped and come out to the living room to see my mom standing by the window, with just a huge pile of spaghetti all over the sill, and a pot on the ground, and I ’m like “Are you gonna eat all that?” And ya’ll she get’s BIG MAD and yells at me and chases me to my room but then a little while later a bunch of cops show up and ask me a bunch of random ass questions about my art? Like this one cop lady keeps asking me to draw dragons for her?! And they seem mad as hell

I didn’t want to get arrested so I just never asked my mom for spaghettis after that. Lesson, learned. Don’t ask mom for spaghettis or she’ll call the damn police on you. 

So I have this memory in my head, and it goes unquestioned until I say it outload for the first time a few months back and as soon as I say the words “When I was six, my mom called the cops on me for asking for spaghettis” My adult logic slams into place and is like “Hang on. Your mother definatly did not call the police on a 6 year old for asking for spaghetti.” 

So obviously that’s not what really went down. I call up my mom to tell her how I remember it and on top of her figuring out why her kid has always been really cagey around spaghettis for the last 3 decades she tells me what really happened. 

So on that night, a man tried to break into our house through the front window. It was just my mom, and her kids so she did what she felt she had too and shot him in the head. He’d been wearing a helmet, which landed on the floor under the window.

Now I just want ya’ll to put yourselves in my moms shoes for a minute here. This woman has just taken a human life. The trauma of that- the instant agony, the panic, the guilt, the fear- all of it hitting her at once, her only solace the knowledge that her children are safe. She protected her daughters. No matter the cost to her soul- her children are safe.

Then she looks up and sees her six year old staring at the inside of this mans head before saying “Are you gonna eat all that?”

If you use Firefox, you can go to the about:config page, search for "media.mediasource.enabled" and double click on it to set it to false. After you restart Firefox, all youtube videos will load entirely even when paused! This also affects other streaming websites :)
