I am excited to share this wonderfully kind and poignant story about three adult siblings who lost their parents in a car accident over twenty years ago and continue to live in their childhood home in Kamakura.
Youko the eldest sibling (played by the incredible Matsu Takako) is an outspoken literary editor and still unmarried in her forties, which seems to bother the people around her - particularly one of her authors, Momeki Ken (Hoshino Gen). Miyako the middle child (Tabe Mikako) is a restless soul and about to move to Busan, South Korea, with her Korean boyfriend (Joo Jong Hyuk) on what seems like a whim. Ushio the little brother (Matsuzaka Toori) works as a tracklayer for a local railway company and hides his gay relationship from Youko for a very particular reason.
I cannot recommend this drama enough! It's such a gentle study on loss, loneliness, time and the transience of living as well as on the importance of being honest with yourself.
Set in both Kamakura and Busan, the scenery is soothing to the eye. All the actors are fantastic (including appearances from Lily Franky, Iiura Arata and Uno Shouhei), the dry humour in Nogi Akiko's script is delightful.
I am very fond of this project and hope you will give it a chance!

Kamakura is a seaside town and a popular tourist destination in Kanagawa Prefecture about an hour from Tokyo.
Hako-nee: Youko's nickname. The first kanji in her name (葉) can be read as ha, a leaf. Nee is older sister.
Shibuya and Meguro are special wards in Tokyo.
In Japanese, the word for enrichment is uruoi, moisture. This is why Youko touches her face when Momeki asks whether there's any enrichment in her enclosure.
Enoden that Ushio works for is short for Enoshima Electric Railway. It's a local railway line connecting Kamakura with Fujisawa.
Tatamu: The reason Nikaidou-sensei talks about folding stuff is because in Japanese this verb also means to bring something to an end.
Bonseki: Ancient Japanese art of creating miniature landscapes on trays using sand and pebbles. The artwork is temporary and will be swept clean once finished.
Wabi-sabi: aesthetic concepts that center on the acceptance of transience and imperfection.
Sabishii: This story is a study on loneliness. However, in Japanese sabishii contains more meanings than just lonely; it's both lonely and sad. I've translated it both ways depending on the situation but please know that they are all related in the original text. Sabishii is the feeling of not having or lacking something. Youko also connects it to the aesthetic of sabi.
Hoshino Gen who plays Momeki Ken is one of my favourite artists (he's also a really great actor and an overall funny person), so I'll just plug a couple of his songs here haha.
Google Earth saves the last photos of Ice and Bradley together. They are sitting on the porch outside of their then-house, and Tom is sipping a beer.
Bradley doesn't have many more photos, maybe a couple, after that day, but every time he googles their old address, he can find his father laughing to a kid he hasn't been in a long time and he finds himself tracing a face he hasn't seen in a long time and that he isn't going to see anymore.
But his dad is still there, on Google Earth, and saved in his phone, laughing at some stupid jokes and waiting for his other father to get back from the grocery store to start making dinner. And Bradley is still there too, just for a little longer.
fic where ice's sister sarah watched him grow up in fear of what people would do if they found out he was gay and urged him before he left home to let someone in and not be scared to love and be loved. he gets the callsign iceman and while she's proud of him she is still sad he has kept his walls up even after getting out of their father's house
then, one day, she is called to the hospital after a bad ejection. she is the only one at his bedside. she holds his hand as he insists he's fine and she didn't need to come, and she calls him an idiot
and then there's a commotion out in the hallway, someone yelling, begging to "just let me see him, please!" tom shouts to the nurses outside, "just let him in, he won't stop bugging you until you do!" so he clearly knows whoever is out there
and in walks this man with wide eyes, dark hair messed up from riding his motorcycle without a helmet again (not that she knows this yet), who looks at tom and says, "i came as soon as i heard." and when he looks at tom, he looks at him. like sarah isn't even there.
and the way tom tries to sit up, eyes glued to this man, his face nearly lighting up in a way sarah can only recognize because she has known him for so long—and the way he says, "you didn't have to"—
and the way the other man says, "of course i did. you're my wingman"—
well. sarah knows what wingman means. and she could not be happier that her brother has found his person.
Hangster prompt that could go two ways when Jake, exasperated, tired, a little drunk and a little heartbroken, asks Bradley - in front of everyone and Penny, during one of their nights out at the Hard Deck - what he knows about:
Prompt A: unrequited love and Bradley answers with the description of two men looking at each other from the opposite side of a piano, while a kid tries to learn a new melody, telling each other they are in love for then never talking about it again just for the love to find space in every aspect of their life but never ever in the way it was supposed to.
Prompt B: love. What the hell does it know about love. Just for Bradley to stop in the middle of a sentence to look up at Jake, smiling softly and asking him if he's really ready to hear all that Bradley does know about love, and if he has a little more time to spear, he could tell Jake what he doesn't know about it.
Nah but there's specifically a comment in the official memorial book from the costuming department who put in a request that he wear more v-necks later I kid you all not. I'll need to dig out my copy 😆
Shout-out to the costuming department staff who were passionately requesting "Y'know, I've always wanted to see Gen Hoshino in a vneck!!" and the chief costumer being like "Yeah ok, and then in episode 10 we'll make sure to emphasize his collar bones by showing him in just the t-shirt but with an even lower v-neck to bring out his sexiness/good looks let's goooooo".
The day Bradley storms out, screaming horrible and petty things, telling them they should be the one dead instead of this real father, Ice wants to say that it's not going to be only wishful thinking for long. But he doesn't because Mav doesn't know yet, and he, they, just lost their kid. So he leaves the letter in his desk where is it, just for a little longer, just to give them to heal a little and, the next day, the calls to fix the first appointment with the oncologist. They have the time, and he will talk to Mav soon.
