He tells everyone initially who is not in his 'in' group the good bye of 'adieu'. The finite good bye. The one where one says 'this conversation is over, good-bye' . The one which is, to my understanding, meant to be stated where a conversation is entirely at its end and they will likely never meet again.
But in ZA, he says 'au revoir', the more open-ended good bye. The 'may we perhaps meet again' good bye. He calls the protagonist 'friend'. He keeps it open, friendly. I just...
