t.A.T.u.'s gimmick was lesbianism and n.A.T.o.'s gimmick was Islamic terrorism. She posed as a shahidka, the Chechen black widow suicide bombers, and did vaguely Arab-y pop songs. Her debut concert was going to replicate a plane hijacking in a year when suicide bombers had blown up two Russian flights and the image of the shahidka was in the spotlight from news clips of female suicide bombers taking part in the Beslan school siege.

I just wish there was more cultural controversy nowadays, tbh.
